I have watched many Camino channels, but by far, yours is the absolute best. I trust your advice because, you are both extremely familiar with Camino de Santiago, and you are still "active" walkers. You have the best advice, and are not just newbies to this pilgrimage, and are still walking it year after year. Thank you so much for all your sound advice. I appreciate all that you both do for me, and for thousands of future pilgrims that are considering this beautiful journey.

Thanks for the great video. Am an Altus Poncho person. At 340gr. this poncho fits nicely around your back pack, has sleeves and keeps everything dry, but also does not flap around on windy days. This is what so many people do not like about ponchos. It also means that dry bags and pack covers can be left at home. My full pack is 5.5-6kg. which does not include my water, but does include the weight of my metal water bottles. We need to stop buying water in those plastic bottles! We are ingesting millions of particles of plastic from these bottles of water sold in stores. Especially if you continue to use them day after day. They start shedding more and more each day, every time you unscrew the cap. Just think, if every pilgrim bought just one "returnable" bottle, this would be almost half a million plastic bottles last year. Most of them are not even recycled. As an older person, that liner does not look comfortable to me. The thought of needing to crawl in and out of it several times a night does not look like fun. Am keeping my sleeping bag.

To add to your fantastic list; I bring 4 safety pins for hanging my wet cloths on a line or my backpack if they are not dry. I don’t agree with the ‘headlamp’. I think the ambient light from a phone is ample enough in most albergues. The majority of headlamp owners use them like a search light-very annoying at 5.00am. Water bottle or bladder? I have tried both on my 6 caminos. I now prefer the bladder and a very small water bottle. Finally I have just received my copy of your wonderful Camino Journal. I commend it to all taking on the Camino. I do believe it will have a life long after you complete the pilgrimage. My thought for the Camino; “there are on answers on the Camino, only questions-so what’s your question?” Buen Camino.

Hi Ricky & Erica! I already have a 40L backpack (with mesh support at the back), so I'll be using that. I've used it as carryon. It was allowed in flights, so no problem there. If I plan to bring carryon only, then I'll have to buy the walking pole & knife in Spain or Portugal. I think if I do the Portugues or Ingles routes, I won't need a pole since there's not much elevation gain. (at my fitness level now) I haven't done the Camino but I usually hike. Instead of flip-flops, I'll bring trek sandals, which can be used for hiking as well as for showers, walk to town, etc. I would also bring a small foldable day bag (preferably water resistant/ proof) so that you can put your clothes & towel there during showers (if you plan to stay in albergues). Also, an S hook, since some albergue do not have hooks in the shower stalls. Cheers!

I travelled around Mexico for 5 weeks in the 1980s. It was my first ever adventure, from the UK, I hadn’t even really hiked or camped before. I carried a 40l backpack which wasn’t even full! Rinsed knickers and socks every night, and did a big wash on really hot days. Pleased that I was doing minimalism all those years ago. I’m tiny though, less than 5ft, so would be looking at carrying a 30l pack now in my old age!

And we narrowly avoided something similar near the Guatemala border. But yes, we travelled on local buses and did hikes out from the towns, near Palenque, oaxaca, Merida and Chichen Itza. A reasonable packing list for a warm weather Camino, well done. One thing I would caution against: putting all your eggs in one basket . . . Last year my nephew's lad went off to Thailand. Bought a, quite expensive, cross body sling and filled it with his passport, bank cards, travel documents and tickets, and when he wasn't using it, his iphone. Walked into a tightly packed market place with it on, walked out with it gone. Everything. Gone. In one fell swoop. The police said the strap was probably cut while he was being jostled. Nearly ruined the trip so beware - there are thieves and vagabonds even on pilgrim routes. Oh, and I vote for the Altus raincoat too (it's NOT a poncho folks, it has sleeves!)

normally there are ropes or places to dry clothes in the albergues- washing tongs not! Anyways taking a small rope and a 2/3 tongs could be helpful... regarding trail running shoes, as @kitty_s is mentioning altras are common, merrel and hokas. but it all depends of your feet, so its better to go to the specialised shop to choose one that fits your needs. sorry but my take after walking the Camino is that this narrative about pack weight is a bit overblown. My pack was 19 pounds and I added a few shirts along the way. The reason is that you get used to your pack weight (or at least I did). How you pack your backpack is much more important to me than weight. From a distance my view is that there are people who love to say I did the Camino with a 12 pound backpack , whatever!!!

Off to the side of the trail. You may need a trowel to dig a hole. Do this first. CaminoTellers also has a devotional toilet paper. You can write down your worries and concerns then wipe them away. Be sure to pack out your trash.

plenty places to do what you need to do on the Way. If you go for the hiking in AT or PCT is a different cup of tea, but in Camino, there shouldn't be any problem- if you can "hold you needs" for some time!

Vanessa, actually it’s not a popular soap, we got it as a present in Poland during our holidays. I don’t think you can get it anywhere else BUT there are plenty of similar options online- all in one soap!

Do you wash your merino cloths with normal soap? The wool Nerds I know always tell me to not use normal soap but one that is "fatting back". And this is also how I do it at home but I don't know how to do it traveling...

Actually no, I don’t. Many of the Caminos start or finish in places where there is at least one pharmacy, moreover all the albergues will have a FAK for the Camino purposes and lastly, the medication and ointment I take I never use… so this year we both decided- we get it when we will need it.

Thanks for sharing your experience, we totally understand how personal it is. One thing that we’ve seen and we experienced is the overpacking- I bet that although in bag is 18kg there is not even one piece of gear which is useless or doesn’t serve at least for multiple functions?
