Hey everyone! Listen to Jane Monheit sing this song. I guarantee you're going to love it. Other than Judy's original version, it's THE most beautiful version you'll ever here.

I think the simple truth about Judy Garland is that she makes us feel so much better to watch her and listen to that amazing voice.

I will say again for all those ignorant of how things were for gays at the time. Nearly nobody was out publicly at this time and to affirm gay people publicly came with huge risks. To even say that somebody was a homosexual publicly was to accuse them of being a deviant or a criminal in the minds of many people. Publicly saying that people were gay was mistreating them as the connotation was negative. She certainly wouldn't have wanted to acknowledge them directly and potentially open up her concerts to surveillance, and publicly affirming support for gay people back then was not done and would have ruined her. She rightly reacted in a way to protect herself and her audience from scrutiny and hostility. Her lifelong friend and musical director, Roger Edens was gay. She knew how the game was played. Judy was asked about her gay audiences on one other occasion and she was quoted as saying, "I couldn't care less. I sing for people."

These days you don't have to take the advice of your doctor without researching it yourself. Had she known what over medication was doing to her body she could have had a better life. Such a tragic but beautiful loving soul.

"I'll be damned if I'll have my audience mistreated" To publicly accuse people of being homosexual or in association with homosexuals back then was incredibly disparaging wether it was true or not. She rightly reacted in a way to protect herself and her audience.

Part of what makes her performance great is her original phrasing. She pauses in places where no other singer would, but it is the right artistic choice for her and it deepens the emotion of the song.

Sid Luft was a horrible creep: he merely saw her as a cash cow, even after she passed on-selling her TV SEASON at CBS for his own pockets. He was a scum-no offense Lorna, but you know how he used Judy for nothing but lining his pockets while she lived in abject poverty!!

Huge Judy fan. Thanks for sharing this clip. ... her ability to caress a ballad with her voice, make it her own, and share it is demonstrated here. Her phenomenal voice is equaled only by her amazing acting skills...and "ugly duckling"...I think not! Very pretty...those big brown eyes! And a song penned by her friend Roger Edens...the Jekyll and Hyde line is high-larious!

Why would he? It was for a roll she was forced to do as a teenager in a very different time. The fact she did the roll says alot more about the purveyors of the entertainment industry and the audiences that lapped it up than it says about a teenaged Judy Garland.

I was born in the late fall of 1978. I Love Judy Garland! In 1965 Judy Garland was rushed to the emergency room to have her stomach pumped after accidently taking an overdose of prescribed barbiturates, amphetamines and sleeping pills, the procedure damaged her vocal cords permanently and her voice was never the same! Judy Garland is only 42 here. Had it not been for her smoking cigarettes which started in 1947, her combining alcohol and drugs when she married her third scam artist, thief and thug husband Sid Luft in 1952, Judy Garland's voice would still have been excellent! Judy Garland looks much older than 42 in this clip! Sadly, and tragically, Judy Garland passed away on June 22, 1969, just 12 days after her 47th birthday from an accidental overdose of a combination of addictive prescribed drugs, consisting of diet pills, barbiturates, amphetamines, and sleeping pills! From 1968 to 1969 Judy Garland was anorexic, emaciated, malnourished, undernourished, and looked like a walking corpse! I've seen these photographs of her. They are difficult and disturbing to look at!
