JUDY GARLAND:'ROCK A BYE YOUR BABY (WITH A DIXIE MELODY)' ON 'THE ANDY WILLIAMS SHOW'. 1965.

Музыка

Performed on 'The Andy Williams Show', September 20, 1965, 'Rock A Bye Your Baby (With A Dixie Melody)' had been a part of Judy's repertoire since the early 50's, and most notably sung at Carnegie Hall, April 23, 1961.
Words by Sam Lewis and Joe Young, music by Jean Schwartz, 1918.
Rock a bye, your baby,
with a dixie melody.
When you croon, croon a tune,
from the heart of dixie.
Just hang my cradle, mammy mine,
right on that masoned, dixen line.
And swing it from virginia, to tennesse,
with all the love that's in ya.
Weep no more, my lady,
sing that song again, for me.
Sing on black joe, just as though,
you have me on your knees.
A Million baby kisses, i'll deliver,
if you will only play that swanee river.
Rock a bye your rock a bye baby,
with a dixie melody.
OH!!Weep no more, my lady,
sing that song again, for me.
Sing on black joe, just as though,
you have me on your knees.
A Million baby kisses, i'll deliver,
if you will only play that swanee river.
Rock a bye your rock a bye baby,
with a dixie melody!

When you're as great a singer as Judy, I guess you can afford to be as warm and generous as she clearly is on this tape (and Rainbow on this show)... those who were lucky enough to see her own TV series will remember how, in her guests' solos, she'd sit just off-camera, and be enraptured at every note, and how she gave people like Streisand and Bennet the courtesy of doing their songs THEIR way. All the greats like Judy can afford to be that generous; what's sad is, so few are. She was the best!

Thank you for the insight into this lovely woman. I am old enough to have watched her shows, but I didn't notice this angle you mention about her being so thrilled by her guests. So thanks for pointing it out. When they cancelled her show it was like they took away Christmas. I still resent that they did that to her and us. We loved her so much, and I do remember thinking that we were very lucky because she would be around for a long time to give us joy. Then she died a few years later. She was so wonderful, and much loved.

All musical variety shows had their individual formats. Mr. Williams was always kind & generous with his guests. He looks very proud to have Ms Garland beside him. Just look how he tries to hold his emotions in check. He might have even been reliving a moment or two with Kay Thompson, through his duet with Ms Garland. The number was simply & elegantly staged. All eyes are focused on Ms Garland in her lovely red dress. Everyone else takes a back seat to her presence, even Mr. Williams.

TobyJae ..., nicely stated ... this is a Garland standard but it was nice to hear her in the duet with Andy Williams. Andy Williams through the years has gone up in my estimation. He's a great American vocalist but he really knew how to sing with other singers and make the moment unique and entertaining. Also, did you notice that three words were changed in this song. There is a reference stated to "sing Old Black Joe." They changed it to "sing sweet and low." I think that's fine to change it because of the changing times, but "rock-a-bye my baby" originally had the lyric "sing Old Black Joe," referring to a Stephen Foster song from the 1850s.

@@Jasper7182009 The last person in the world to understand the change in lyrics would be Judy, who was not a hateful person, but she gave in to this concession only for television. She sang the altered version on the Ed Sullivan Show also. In live performances, however, she would stick to the real lyrics, written by Foster, and expected by her audiences.

@@balto4 I hope this does not offend my fellow Judy lovers. I named my gorgeous palomino Judy Garland. Everyone loves that I named her that. My horses are my treasures and I love Judy so much this was the best way for me to honor her. When I had Lyme disease a few years ago, I tell everyone that it was God who healed me and Judy walked with me. I watched all of her movies, saturated myself with her music. God used Judy to bring me through two years of hell. We have a beautiful barn. I am born and raised in New Orleans so all the horses stall names are specially made to look like French Quarter streets. My Judy has everything red, her feed and water buckets, halter, blanket. I think our Judy Garland would get the biggest enjoyment out of it all if she was still here. I would love to show her children. In fact, my Judy is so gorgeous we have a friend who is constantly plotting how he could steal her without us missing her. She is well trained and gentle as all of our horses are. It is good talking to someone who loves Judy also.

What a great video of Judy with Andy Williams. Can you imagine being one of the chorus boys or girls sitting at Judy's knee and listening to her singing "Rock-a-Bye Baby" live. What an experience that must've been for them and thank goodness for video so that we can experience it, too!

They're probably grateful she didn't belt out the end like she usually does cos their ears would be ringing for a week! I was lucky enough to watch Liza sing from the wings of her London show in 2008 and my god she was deafening - hearing her voice straight from her without coming through the mic was astonishing. And I've grown up with opera singers - Liza could more than hold her own with any of them in terms of power & volume! - having Judy belting at you in person must have been like being hit by a vocal freight train at top speed!

@@szembekk I think when Lorna was younger, she had a better voice than Liza. Also Liza had opportunities that Lorna did not have because Judy died when Lorna was so young. Liza got to perform at the London palladium with Judy. Judy got her with the best singing coach and Vincent with acting. Had Judy lived longer I think Lorna may have been as big a star as Liza. Judy always said that Lorna was her singer. These are just my opinions. Please don't shoot me down. I love Judy so much as well as all of her children.

I love this version! Fantastic. I have seen it before and may have even watched it originally since I searched for her every performace on TV. But I just noticed she changed the lyric. Only a year earlier on her TV show she was still singing the original Al Jolson "Old Black Joe" lyric. But here they changed it "sweet and low". It's easy to see the impact of civil rights and that they were being both sensitive and progressive on the show.

Several months after this, she sang the same song on The Ed Sullivan Show, and she also used the "soft and low" lyric at that time. I really think it was a racial sensitivity type thing. I saw her a couple of years later in concert, and it was back to "Old Black Joe."

ALWAYS too generous with her fellow performers -- not only did Williams have to push in on HER song, the ENDING (which is this legendary lady's big climax that everyone anticipates) had to be in HIS key -- so he got to sing the MELODY while she was forced to waddle around with lower register harmony!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Unbelievable. I can't stand that creepy man. And you could hear that she was in great voice; the notes were exploding from her throat -- she had to pull on the reins!!!
