Interesting interview, thanks for sharing this! I read Sanders' book and it is excellent reading. He interviewed the family and most of her guest stars and many on her three different production teams. It gave me such a clear picture of what happened and of what never should have happened to her or the show. The politics behind the show really hurt Judy and in the words of her daughter Lorna, the show's cancellation really was the beginning of the end for her mother. To lose her was tragic enough. That she had to endure the disrespect dished out by network executives who just didn't value who she was or what she had to offer was terrible. Her work on the show was brilliant and the stuff that wasn't perfect was due to politics and the mishandling of her talent, skills and brilliance as a performer. The book is great and this interview is too. Thanks again!

I never read Steve’s book but the one Judy bio that is really the best was “JUDY” by Gerald Frank I think it came out in 1975. He actually did his research and even had the blessing of her children. A very good read!

Saxon C - you are spot on. I’ve read so many, and Gerold Frank’s is by far, the best. He had access to family and friends - much more so than any other biographers.

In an interview, Lorna Luft said the cancellation of Judy’s TV show was the beginning of the end for her, because she had counted on it giving her financial security and she’d be able to buy a home for she and the children. Joey Luft confirmed in an interview that she was profoundly affected.

JG's demon had a name, which the gents in this video dance around, but never say; it was major INSECURITY. Hard to believe, to be sure; however, if CBS had KNOWN this, perhaps they could have dealt with JG more effectively. And if the interviewer hadn't interrupted, Mr. Sanders was about to reveal that Jim Aubrey actually sabotaged the show due to his personal disdain for the star...he intentionally changed the time slot to put the show up against the unbeatable "Bonanza" to assure cancellation. (Mr. Aubrey PUBLICLY stated that his goal was to have the JG Show knock "Bonanza" off its perch, but folks who worked on the project, as well as some who were personal friends of Aubrey, later admitted that he KNEW the show would fail as a result of the time slot change that he had made. It was ALSO well known that his treatment of JG, evidenced by inexplicably foul words he used to describe her behind the scenes, was deplorable; he wittingly exacerbated her major insecurity in order to kill the project as quickly as possible.) Mel Torme, who wrote most of JG's special material for the show, was a very talented man; however, his staggering ego was distasteful to many folks who worked with him at this point in his career. For this reason, he was ill-equipped to maintain a good working relationship with JG; in fact, as he became increasingly impatient when he realized all the air-time upon which he insisted in his contract would not come to fruition, he began antagonizing the star of the show, which increased her insecurity. Torme was, without question, a legend in his own mind. lol)

I’m sorry but fuck Mel torme! Lol Judy will live on and Mel will just be a mention. I do think he was gifted for sure but he can suck it. I really don’t like being hateful but Judy feels like a family member. I’ve loved her most of my life.

I don't think any book written about Judy was ever honest, including Lorna's. I wish someone would write a book just about her tremendous sense of humor. I don't know all the garbage that went on at CBS, but, they should have just let JUDY BE JUDY. And why in the heck didn't they move her show to another time slot? I am sure the parents would have given up watching Bonanza, but not the kids. If they moved her the show would have been successful, but CBS was to stupid to do such a thing. I watched every show, and thought she was outstanding.

To be honest the only book about Judy that i have read about Judy was that written by her daughter Lorna Luft. I dont know if she has written one or two but to me Judy Garland is the product of her daughters book.
