JUDY GARLAND: 'JUST IN TIME' WITH MORT LINDSEY. A DEFINITIVE VERSION.

Музыка

Performed by Judy Garland with Mort Lindsey on Episode 9 of 'The Judy Garland Show',October 4, 1963.
For me, this is the definitive performance by Judy of 'Just In Time'. Beginning as a slow, wistful hope ... and building to a crescendo of expression ... Judy modulates this song to perfection.
Words by Betty Comden and Adolph Green, music by Jule Styne, 1956.
Just in time
I found you just in time
Before you came my time was running low
I was lost
The losing dice were tossed
My bridges all were crossed
No where to go
Now you're here
And now I know just where I'm going
No more doubt or fear
I've found my way
For love came just in time
You found me just in time
And changed my lonely life that lucky day
Just in time
I found you just in time
Before you came my time was running low
I was lost
The losing dice were tossed
My bridges all were crossed
No where to go
Now you're here
And now I know just where I'm going
No more doubt or fear
I've found my way
For love came just in time
You found me just in time
And changed my lonely life that lovely day
Hey, you came along
I mean you came along
And changed my life that lovely day

I hadn't heard this song before. I knew it with Fantastic Judy 💞, just this year.. Today I looked it up in other versions. No one can hold the candle to Judy's version. Not even Dean Martin 👑, my absolute King. Peggy Lee's is pretty good. But the emotion I get listening to Judy, is totally different. It goes from her soul directly to mine. Mesmerizing Judy Garland 💞.. 🪻🌿

She's been gone 50 years now, hard to believe she left us an only 47, the wonderful thing is she's lived on longer than she was alive, and she will be alive as long as there are those who appreciate a magnificent voice and talent. We miss you Judy!

She knew all of her arrangements right down to the last note. And she sang a lyric like no one else. Such a talented lady and how the business didn't treat her better throughout. She was GOLD. The standard by which we can measure all of those others who sing their voices and NOT pay attention to the lyric - and send it across like she did.

How in the FUCK does she modulate like that? Half keys? Are you kidding me? My God, you can listen to her singing the same song a thousand times and still hear something new that she did better than ANYONE else. Seriously. I’d sound like I’d just fallen down a flight of stairs if I even tried anything like that.

First heard Judy sing this song in 1961. It was the Carnegie Hall show in S.F at the Civic Aud. As in this video she was sitting on the piano bench with Mort Lindsay and she stood up and started that strut downstage the audience went wild as we did often during her concerts. Judy was the best and still is the best! Hall

First modulation is a half step higher at end of 1st time through the tune, as she rises from piano, and 2nd key change another half step up at "I was lost,...", then a third modulation, this one a full step up at "For love came.../Just In Time, I found you Just in Time, &c.". I prefer her version w/ the huge tag finish to this one, where she sings" You went and changed my life, re-arranged my only life. You changed my lonely life,...that LOVE-LY DAY!" The Kid's a Killer.

One of the reasons Judy repeated songs on the series was that before she switched to the "Concert" format of the show, her voice was picked up by the overhead boom mic, which was forced to move with the cameras. Usually at the songs end, it has to move back to not be picked up in the frame as the camera pulls away from Judy. Often she is seen belting away with very little or no sound. She was unhappy with the sound for much of the series and, when they decided to do concerts and they bought an expensive new hand held mic for her, she felt she could better her first efforts and so she repeated many of the songs from the beginning of the series such as Old Man River, As Long As He Needs Me, Come Rain or Come Shine etc. Steve Sander's book answers a lot of "why's" about Judy's series.

As the tempo speeds up watch the incredible 'language' of gestures and movement that make her live performances so powerful and unique. If you see earlier Garland NONE of this was there. She aged way too young. The tremble in her voice and hesitant movements. It became part of her "mystique." But one can only imagine if she were able to live a more normal life without drugs what her performances would be like and how much her age and wisdom would have added to those performances. I love her, but feel such sadness every time I see her struggling in these venues.
