Музыка
Judy Garland sang many songs about 'Smiles'. This is perhaps the most rare ... it is not the song you may be thinking of. ... Performed on 'Jack Oakie's College' radio program, April 6, 1937. Judy was 15 years old.
Included with this rare audio are seldom seen photos.
'Smiles' to all who Love Judy.
Words by J. Will Callahan, music by Lee S. Roberts, 1917.
If you just stop to think, here's a lesson for you
What a word or a smile can convey
With a word you can make someone happy or blue
With a smile you can make them sad or gay
So be careful what you say
And be careful how you smile
It's so easy for us to make
Someone's life worthwhile
There are smiles, that make us happy
There are smiles, that make us blue
There are smiles, that steal away the teardrops
Like the Sunbeams steal away the dew
There are smiles, that have a tender meaning
That the eyes of love alone can see
But the smiles, that fill my life with sunshine
Are the smiles that you gave to...
But the smiles, that fill my life with sunshine
Are the smiles that you gave to me!

The legendary, adorable very pretty and extremely talented Judy Garland sings every song perfectly! This is classic!
If the program was April 1937, Judy was still 14. This remarkable performance shows that everything Judy would need to be a great performer was already there.

JUDY when YOU're smiling the whole world smiles with you 💕
Jury awesome as always
There are smiles; there are singers, and some of the songs they sing are blue. All through the ages, the list runs for many pages, and the sages like to wax just like the way old records were once made. But in the memories that will never ever fade, as we enjoy listening to music under the old oak's shade, just be glad that there ever was a Garland, for there is only one Judy, the voice eternal as if once in Eden's lushest glade.
New judy song.. 👍
Judy Garland has a beautiful voice Judy Garland always inspired me when i was a little boy infact when i was in my darkest part of my life when i was a teenager her ghost saved my life and she made me happy I'm forever grateful for what she's done for me and I'll never forget it as long as i live plus she's got a beautiful voice and personality to match she loves all of us her fan's and we love you Judy Garland forever and always and forever and forever more
It's amazing how all those studios passed on her. I read that her Mother took her to every studio for an audition, and after hearing her they weren't interested. I'm sure it had to do with her looks, she wasn't cute enough. She sure turned out to be good looking as she got older. There loss.
Remarkable performance from such a young girl marked for superstardom!!
Au Contrare Michelle, This is exactly the song I was expecting. I have an original sheet music with an enchanting young lady on the cover. Thanks for posting this memorable song. Judy was fabulous.
You made me love you..rip.judy your in my heart...love dj
Mom used to sing this quit often!!
This is beautiful..
Thank you
It's fantastic! Great Michele!
it's very interesting that Judy's voice is aching for a different arrangement with a different background leading instruments. They are sound more Hopalong Cassidy rather than Judy Garland, but Judy being Judy does what she does best, she sings through a very strange arrangement. The on from For me and my Gal, that Roger did, is more suited to her style. This is one of those arrangements just like Roger's 1930s Johnny One Note for Judy also had a very awkward quality (not in Judy's singing, but the material). certain songs are much better simply sung straight forward and in itself they are magnificent, but give them so extra stuff, they take away from the song and the performance. Judy's voice was solid as always.

almamatters2471 u still alive?
I have this whole radio show! But it's on cassette, so I don't know how to share it :(
will be recording a new Dixieland version of this song soon with Minnesota's "Somewhat Dixieland Band" wish us luck!
It is indeed the song I was thinking of . . at least the chorus is. The verse is different, and the entire performance is far slower than the original two-step tempo of the 'teens recordings. Interesting "modernization". Songs tended to get slower as their original audience got older. :)
