JUDY GARLAND AND MARTHA RAYE: A GLEN MILLER MEDLEY.

Ойын-сауық

Performed by Judy Garland and Martha Raye for 'The Judy Garland Show', taped January 14, 1964. These Great Ladies Of Laughter take us on a wonderful medley of Glen Miller standards, including: 'I've Heard that Song Before', 'Moonlight Cocktail', 'Pennsylvania 6-5000', 'Elmer's Tune', 'At Last', & 'St. Louis Blues March.' This is one of my favorite segments from Judy's show.
Judy had history with Martha Raye, both having been married to band leader, David Rose. She became engaged to David in May 1941, just 2 months after his divorce from Martha Raye. Despite planning a big wedding, the couple eloped to Las Vegas and married during the early hours of July 28th 1941, with her mother Ethel and her stepfather Will Gilmore present. Judy was 19 years old.
While there is some controversy with details - Judy being forced into an abortion - essentially, the couple separated in January 1943 when Judy realized that David was too weak to fight for her and stand up to MGM. Judy always needed ... & looked for ... a protector.

Martha Raye and Judy Garland were both married to David Rose the composer 3 years apart. First Raye in 1938, then Garland in 1941. They are hilarious here.

Wow Mark. I didn't know they both married David Rose. Thanks for this background info. ❤ I like finding out about my favorite stars. Well, Mr. Rose must have loved classy women with great comedy timing. Martha Raye is a pretty woman when she's not doing her hilarious mugging. Pretty good dancer too, like Judy. Back then, entertainers could do it all...act, sing, dance, do drama and comedy.j

These were fun, real people that had a decency about themselves unknown of in the entertainer's of today. Half of their gestures and imitations during the various songs would be considered politically incorrect today. My were we better off during those years when Garland and Race were singer's!

The Garland was a musical genius. Here's proof. What IS it about HER? Personality + I reckon. She's only alive on the stage - which was her tragedy.
