CORNISH KAYAK ANGLER - Kayak Fishing Blog - kayakfishing.blog

I live in Cornwall and get to paddle and fish in some of the most beautiful and productive waters in the UK. I have been kayak fishing since 2012 and have fished for many years more. I enjoy fishing for numerous species that are found in our waters - from the small mini-species up to larger specimens. I also participate in several kayak fishing competitions across the UK. I currently work at Cornwall Canoes - A Kayak Fishing Specialist Store - and get to play with some of the coolest fishing kayaks and kayak fishing gear available on the market!

    My fav is rivet nut plus. Similar to trifold pop rivet but stronger. And much better than standard rivet nuts which are akin to ordinary pop rivets. They produce a threaded hole that accept the matching machine screw. Works great on sheet metal such as on cars. But with care they do OK on plastic and fiberglass hulls as well as aluminum boats. I tend to use smaller sizes below M6 to avoid drilling large holes that rubber expanding nuts require. They have a lot of strength and are a step up from jack nuts too.

    Great video. I am installing anchor trolley , and one side i can only use well nuts. I listened the instructions and drilled 3/8 hole and now as you mentioned rubber is spinning and the attachment is coming off. I used adhesive glue also. Do you think i should go one size bigger on the well nut and tighten? Thanks

    How did you install the trifold rivets on the zig zag cleat? My rivet gun didn’t reach through the zip zags and had to use screws.

  • @CornishKayakAngler
    @CornishKayakAngler26 күн бұрын

    Some rivet guns will push into the gaps with a bit of force. Some are just way to big. Either by a new rivet gun with a smaller nose, or if yours pushes most of the way in, just slide some washes or a nut over the stem of the rivet so the nose of the river gun can compress the rivet against that. That way it doesn’t need to reach fully into the gap down to the rivet head. Hope this helps!

  • @CornishKayakAngler

    This is the point of the video! The manufacturer incorrectly shows how to use a ladder lock buckle in their instructions. Over the years it has led to endless users having difficulty threading the straps and preventing them slipping under tension. I work at a kayak store and it’s one of the most common issues people have with the C-Tug trolleys. Threading the straps in this way eliminates all issues! Even their instructions on the recently released C-Tug R shows the same issue. It confuses the hell out of people, hence thousands watching this video for assistance 😉

    Great video, thanks very much for all the information. I’m setting up an almost identical system for my small RIB - I was wondering, once the anchor has hit the bottom and you are letting out the extra line - do you mark the line at increments (say every 5/10m) with a Sharpie or something? I thought about tying knots, but that might harm the integrity of the line?

    I have recently purchased a triumph 13, I'm an experienced paddler and have already tried it out in testing lake and sea conditions. I have found that the kayak goes like lightening in flat and windless environments however in windy or wavy conditions it suffers badly from 'weather cocking' (aka not going in the direction you intend !) and can therefore become a real handful. I have since fitted a rudder kit which has literally transformed the kayaks performance. If your paddling flat water it's great otherwise, in my view, a rudder is a definite worthwhile upgrade. Not that easy to fit but there are videos out there .

    Explained well but... that float is way to large for a kayak, you can buy anchor floats for kayaks online about 1/4 the size that work well, you also do not need floating rope. You also do not actually need a anchor trolley for quick release. On my set up I have nylon line on a hand cast fishing reel so it deploys much faster than a dive reel and you have a quick release clip that releases the anchor much faster than winding it around the cleat that clips onto my seat. Why is the anchor rope tied off onto a carabiner and then clipped onto the anchor chain? why not just tie the rope to the anchor chain or a galvanised D shackle?. Been around Kayaks and boats all my life and this seems really complex for something that is really simple.

    Do what works for you! 😎 I guess you are not fishing UK waters by your response? To answer your questions: The float is neither too big or too small. We fish in huge tidal ranges in the UK and if you have to ditch the anchor set up during a running tide, a small buoy will be pulled under the surface by the force of the water. This size buoy will hold up in around 2 knots of tide (typical tidal flow here), any more and it will get pulled under. The solution is to have a bigger buoy but this then this takes up more room on the kayak when not in use. Floating rope gives you more area to grab if you need to retrieve your set up after ditching it. I.e you don’t have to aim just for the buoy - if you miss it you have a chance of grabbing the rope too. Almost all plastic polypropylene style ropes float so it’s easy to incorporate into the set up. Tried the fishing rod / nylon line when I started kayak fishing (12 years ago). Difficult to use in conjunction with an anchor trolley. Can’t just stick it in a rod holder without an anchor trolley and the tides here will pull your kayak over! I used 50lb line and it breaks too easily on when an anchor gets snagged. Soon ditched the idea and the set up shown here is a much more effective system, and the simple anchoring set up shown in one of my other videos makes it even simpler / easier but without the quick release / pick up buoy option. The zig zag cleat works well for gripping multistrand anchor cord typically used on anchoring set ups in the UK. The anchor line is tied to a karabiner to allow quick up clipping of the anchor from the line. This makes it easier to separate the set up and stow on the kayak. Also makes it easier if hand hauling the line until the anchor arrives at the kayak - I clip the anchor then sling the karabiner back in the water and quickly wind on the slack line onto the reel. I must have dropped anchor several thousand times on a kayak over the years and both this system and the set up shown in my simple anchoring set up video work great here for anchoring a kayak in the UK 😎 If you have a method that works for you and is safe for the waters you fish then that’s great, go catch ‘em! 🎣
