Installing a Bixpy J-2 Outboard Motor Kit to a Hobie Outback Kayak + On-The-Water Testing

Спорт

In this video I take a close look at the Bixpy J-2 Outboard Motor Kit and run through installing this to my Hobie Outback fishing kayak. I then take the kayak out on the water and test out the motor!
The Bixpy J-2 Motor Kit is a is a plug and play electric outboard motor system for kayaks, SUPs and other small watercraft, powered by a waterproof lithium battery pack. This is a small lightweight motor set up weighing less than 10lbs including the battery! Fitting a Bixpy Motor to the Hobie Outback was made really easy with the Bixpy Power-Pole Adaptor designed for use with the Outback.
Out on the water I test the speed of the Outback with the Bixpy at full speed, half speed and at full speed whilst pedalling with the Mirage Drive. I compare this to pedalling with the Mirage Drive only and give my initial thoughts on the performance of the J-2 Motor.

got myself a bixpy. the only con i would say about the bixpy is the connector: i don't like how the connector nut doesn't twist enough. doens't feel reassuring but first trip with it and had no issue but still that part could be an improvement.

Nice video and review. I wonder how much % of speed you'd gain by bringing up the mirage drive when using the Bixpy?

Thanks Doug. I did think the same after getting off the water. Although I’d have needed to take the Mirage Drive Cassette Plug with me to block the hole as the open well causes a fair bit of drag on it’s own. I’ll have to give it a go another time and report back 😀

I love my PA-12, and i upgraded to the PP 768 J2 BIXPY. When it arrives you need nothing. That's why i love the Bixpy. A 12ft boat, with fins, your paddle, and a Dependable Bixpy, is an amazing setup. I love my tournaments, and covering water. You can always purchase a spare bixpy battery, and you're never going to run out of power, and you'd still be at 17 lbs maximum. They link to your motor via Bluetooth. Awesome set-up. 🛶 🎣 🌊

Curious if the loader works with the mount installed? Or would you need to remove the mount from the kayak?

@@CornishKayakAngler I watched the whole video, I just wasn’t sure if that was purchased separately or not. It wasn’t one of the items you showed came with the box. I ask cause I passed up a huge deal for $700 brand new in box for the outboard kit. I went another route cause I thought the mounting bracket was not included… I may have made a huge mistake lol. Great video man. Keep it up!

Fabulous and very detailed video on the Bixpy for the Outback. After watching many videos yours was by far the most informative and detailed. Many thanks for sharing. I have been considering buying one for my outback and after watching your video I’m now convinced. I was wondering weather the rear mount would be an issue when unloading and would it bottom out before the hobie rudder protector. I’d prefer the rear mount to the mirage mount……What are your thoughts as I see you have both. Cheers and thanks again

Thanks George, I really appreciate the feedback. I tried the Outback Loader with the Bixpy mount fitted and the loader still clips on fine and can be used as normal. I have some photos for reference if you need to see them but have no way of adding them to the comments here! I’m on FB as ‘Cornish Kayak Angler - Kayak Fishing Blog’ if you wanted to get in touch for the photos 👍🏻

Oh, and rear mount is better in my opinion as you can then use the drive at the same time with the motor providing assistance.

@@CornishKayakAngler Definitely looking forward to that video! This one was really helpful and much more in-depth than any of the others on the Bixpy. Thanks! I have a Passport, and my only option would be the mirage drive adaptor. Given that I tend to overestimate the amount of peddling I can reasonably do in a single session, I tend to go much farther than I ought to (comfortably) and suffer on the return. Oops! 🤣 This will be a great option!

When you drop the motor and ot doesn't click in. All you have to do is put it in forward 2 or 3 clicks and it'll lock right in. Don't have to use the paddle

Bro try torqeedo it’s much faster even with the smaller motor 403 can you imagine with 1103 half trottle on 1103 is your full paddle with your full bixpy trust.

  • @CornishKayakAngler

    @CornishKayakAngler

    3 ай бұрын

Yeah I’ve seen the 1103, it’s a beast! Probably too powerful for my Revolution 16 and even half throttle on my Outback would be more than enough. The 403 is a nice sized piece of kit. Expensive here in the UK though! If speed is not the priority then Bixpy is a good option and more cost effective here.

In theory you’d only have to push it once when first launching, it really wasn’t much faff at all. But yeah it would be cool if they had a better way to lock it down in place. Perhaps a second line to pull and cleat off?
