Installing a Fish Finder to the Viking Kayaks Tackle Pod - Lowrance Hook Reveal 5

Спорт

This video shows you how to install a Lowrance Hook Reveal 5 fish finder and chartplotter to the removable Tackle Pod found on the Viking Kayaks Profish Reload and Profish GT Fishing Kayaks.
I show step by step detail on the installation of the 83/200 HDI transducer using the Lowrance Scupper Hole Mount, the mounting of the display screen using a Railblaza Hook Fish Finder Mount with StarPort along with powering the fish finder using a 12V battery.
The Lowrance Hook Reveal 5 is a fish finder with CHIRP Sonar, DownScan Imaging and a GPS Chartplotter. This fish finder is a popular choice for kayaks and small boats.

    Great Video thanks 👍 just got a hook reveal 5 for my new reload, last FF I hooked up was the garmin striker 4 plus on a different kayak, so this is very helpful, and I've ordered the mount kit now too. 😎

    Thank you! I have watched several of your articles now and they are brilliant! Very clear in terms of quality of film and you have an excellent way of explaining things. You should become a teacher! I live in Tynemouth, Newcadtle and I'm new to kayak fishing. I have bought a Viking Reload with Bixpy motor set up. Looking forward to getting started. Thanks again, much appreciated! Best wishes, David

    Hi Paul, the fish finder is best placed centrally for viewing whilst paddling. I could have used one of the StarPort HD mounts already fitted to the pod but these would offset the screen and drive my OCD crazy! The StarPort HD’s can be used for a couple of Rod Tubes for trolling 😃

    Great tutorial video ... would this be the same for the Profish 400 tackle pod?

  • @CornishKayakAngler

    @CornishKayakAngler

    3 жыл бұрын

    Hi Paul, the Profish 400 has a different TacklePod which does not reach through the hull to the underside, so you can’t mount a transducer to it. The Profish 400 has a transducer scupper hole recessed into the kayak itself, so you’d need to mount the transducer here, or look at an in-hull install or arm-mounted option over the side of the kayak. You can still rig a fish finder to a 400, it’s just not as simple and straight forwards as the Profish Reload.

    Makes it look simple, nice video. Does the Hook 5 have a different transducer to the Hook 2? And if so does it fit the same? Thanks.

    @CornishKayakAngler

    Thanks! Yes the Hook Reveal has a larger HDI transducer than the Hook2 4X range. The Lowrance Transducer Scupper Hole Mount only works with the HDI transducer and is not directly compatible with the Hook2 4X transducers which are much smaller.

    Hi Liam, can you install a fish finder and all the cabling/power etc on a Viking 2+1 tandem in such a way that it could be used and viewed from the back seat as a tandem AND the middle seat as a single?

  • @CornishKayakAngler

    @CornishKayakAngler

    3 жыл бұрын

    Hi Tony, a bit of a tricky one as there will be a compromise either way. Obvious place to install would be on the flat area just forwards of the central seat position / back of the front seat position... a long stretch from the back seat though and possibly a bit too close when paddling from the middle seat. You could possibly fit a couple of sections of low profile slide tracks to the side of the kayak - one in a position for back seat paddling, and one further forwards for center seat paddling. Would depend on if you were installing the transducer in-hull or on an arm over the side as to how straight forward it would be. I’d have to offer mounts up to a 2+1 next time I get my hands on one to be sure of the best option

    Does the transducer have to sit totally level with the transducer slot in the base of the tackle pod? I'm worried of the transducer getting scuffed if the kayak is set on the ground - can I set the transducer approx 1cm into the slot?

  • @CornishKayakAngler

    @CornishKayakAngler

    2 жыл бұрын

    Hi Jonny, you can sit it slightly within the recess and it will be fine. Transducers are tougher than people realise, they are usually mounted on the transom of a boat and dragged through the water at 20+ knots with the odd collision with surface debris, so the odd scrape and knock won’t do them much harm!

    Would the lowrance triple shot transducer fit on the tackle pod as I’m thinking of getting one

  • @CornishKayakAngler

    @CornishKayakAngler

    3 жыл бұрын

    The sidescan transducers won’t fit in the recess so you would need some form of extender to sit the transducer proud of the bottom of the pod. I have seen a few photos of homemade mounts that look for work fine. It would be cool to see Viking mould some brass inserts into the transducer slot on the pods to make it easy for the user to bolt on homemade transducer brackets. It would be easy enough to bolt through the plastic to fit your own though.

    The Triple Shot transducer is too long for the recess, you’d need to make an adaptor for it to sit flush with the bottom of the kayak for the side scan to work fully anyway. I’m sure there’s a way to do it but not something I’ve done myself before

    no inline fuse ???????

  • @CornishKayakAngler

    @CornishKayakAngler

    3 жыл бұрын

    You could put one near the battery if you wanted. A 3A inline fuse is supplied with the fish finder. Unlikely to ever surge the unit when it’s the only device drawing from the relatively small power source in the set up shown. Never had an issue myself but if you want peace of mind then wire in the inline fuse 😀

  • @darrenrodd.
    @darrenrodd.3 жыл бұрын

    I think it would have been better if u cut a half circle for the wire to come out and put it near the fishfinder would have fitted a bit better , but good job

  • @CornishKayakAngler

    @CornishKayakAngler

    3 жыл бұрын

    It doesn’t matter too much where the wires come out. The further back, the less of an angle it puts between the wire and the connector in the back of the unit, so less stress on the wire at the join. Not that it is likely to cause an issue though. The latest pods have a hole cut out in the middle for connectors to pass straight through
