Thanks, I used this video and the through hull transducer mount video to fit a Lowrance Hook2 x4 to my kayak. Really clear and well explained, had my first trip out with my new fish finder on the weekend and worked really well. Keep up the good work!

Great vid. Just got a Tarpon 120. In the process of outfitting it for fishing. Do you remember if the Scanstrut cable seal was a medium or large? I tried to read the package. Thanks for all the info. It's helping me get everything right the first time.

Thanks for the comment! It was a Scanstrut Medium Cable Seal - for connectors up to 30mm.

Do you have ang videos of fitting a gsrmin striker 4 and transducer as I'm planning on fitting one to my yak and struggling go find the best way

Hi Alex, thanks for the comment. This kayak is not one of my own and I rigged this for a friend. If I was choosing between the Hook Reveal 5 and the Striker Vivid 5cv, it would be a tough call as both are great units. I like that the Hook Reveal has the option to add a chart card for full maps, but both have software to allow you to build up your own charts from the sonar readings.

Very clean install, where did you buy your cable seal ? I like how clean and waterproof it looks

With some transducers it doesn't matter but to be sure it is best to have the end with the wire coming out of it pointing towards the bow

Thanks! That’s the 83/200 HDI transducer, you can also get this unit with a 50/200 HDI Transducer (works a bit better in deep waters). Hope this helps

How long will the battery last

That particular battery (7Ah) will last around 8 hours or so on the Hook Reveal 5. The max draw of the unit is 0.9A so if the unit is drawing max power (backlight on full, deepwater fishing) then it will last just under 8 hours.

Hi and thank you for a great video. I have a kayak and am trying to get my Garmin Striker 4 to work and have followed advice on many different videos ... but unfortunately I am about to give up ... My problems: 1) I bought the Garmin in-hull mount foam piece with a "super stick" surface to the hull. The idea is you fill it with water and then put in the transducer. Anyway it has leaked every time and I fill my kayak with water instead :-(. Can I use silicone sealant and hope it holds better? 2) My "power pack" has been wither 8 x AA 2800 mAh rechargeable Volt batteries combined on Amazon battery holder (managed to get 9,3 VOLTS) (recommended from a You Tube video for this fish finder) sealed in a water proof box. As a second option I've replaced these with standard Duracell 8 x 1,5 V batteries and got 10,7 volts. I noted in this test one battery got so hot I burnt my hand and immediately gave up as I judged it a fire risk. Ive not found the products battery power range but it is just "12 Volt". Shall I abandon this and go for a battery you describe? 3) The transducer has never ever given me a reading (probably due in part to the above) it has just flashed "0,0 m". I have really made sure the connection is in properly. Is there anyway to quickly test my transducer without doing a full kayak launch? Thanks for any help you can offer. Regards Dave

Hi Dave, it’s sounds like you’re having a nightmare with your Garmin! I would scrap the water idea unless you build a decent sealed well. Personally I would do as I have in this video and use silicon or Sikaflex. You’ll probably find that this solves the issue and no water in the kayak! Ditch the multiple small batteries too. I think my fish finder cuts out when my battery reaches somewhere between 10.8-11.2V so it sounds like the smaller batteries are struggling to reach this. I know at full charge my battery reads 14.4V and then gradually discharges to around the 10-8V-11.2V range when the sonar cuts out. Go for one of the sealed lead acid type batteries I describe and I expect this will solve your sonar reading issue. If this still doesn’t work then it may be the transducer itself that is faulty. You could test by holding the transducer at the surface in a full bucket of water or better still a tall water butt or pond. The reading may not show anything meaningful but you should notice a change on reading from it being in the air - hopefully that makes sense! Be sure to let me know how you get on! 👍🏻
