I think your point about "comfort media" is good. Yes, it's important to have media that makes us happy obviously, but media that disturbs us is just as important. We can't grow as people without hardship, conflict, and discomfort. Staying inside our safe zone doesn't help us mature. There is plenty of media that I've consumed that I often wish I hadn't because of how disturbing it was, but I know that I'm a better writer and a more mature person because I have experienced and thought deeply about those pieces of media that disturbed me. I've never seen Buffy, but from what I know from this video and some of your other videos, it definitely seems like a show that matured with its audience, which I always see as a good thing.

I love this season, it’s one of my favorites. When season 6 came out I was 19/20 and in a dark place as well, so it was relatable AF for me. Life Serial, Once more with Feeling and Tabula Rasa are probably my favorite Buffy episodes!

What is "TBA", the bottom text on the image macros of the forced-birth ghouls? The closest things I can find are "To be aborted" or "Traditional Birthing Assistant" (midwife), neither is which seem to fit.

There is something similar for men - maybe not to the same extent, but there's the whole "a _real_ man does xyz" and "soy latte" thing. It's different in that it's not 'me vs the world' but 'my clan vs the world', but still. "_You're_ a weak pansy because _you_ drink lattes instead of WD-40"

This might be the best video I've seen all year. I have nothing to add really bc you completely blow me out of the water in both knowledge and understanding (and I'm someone who prides themselves on being a "thinker", someone who places great value on nuance, empathy, deeper understanding, meaning, application, and a healthy dose of intellectualism when it comes to art/culture). You display an incredibly thorough and intricate understanding of fandom art and culture, and how to contrast and compare it against art, art critic, media consumption and culture at large. Based on nothing but my personal assumptions, you have to be in like the 0.1% of most knowledgeable people on the subject (art vs fan-art). At the same time, you have a knack for synergizing and intersecting information, as well as presenting and dispersing that knowledge to a wide audience (not everyone can do that, two separate skill sets). Aaaand you make video essays (way more accessible, then let's say, reddit threads or tumblr posts)? These traits combined make you a rare unicorn in my eyes, not just a unicorn, but also a rare one, like one of those on a special limited edition trade card with a silver border. I am thoroughly impressed and also very thankful you made this. You made a very valuable contribution to the discourse (I don't mean to come across as pretentious like that's on me to decide, just that I feel strongly about that =). Thank you, Sarah Z; and also a thanks to your co-writer Emily, who I assume was involved in the making of this. PS: I subscribed!

Oh my gosh, I was rewatching this as a larger part of looking back on some mid-2000s media and happened to notice what I thought may have been a wink when you said "Awoken by Serra Elinsen". I realized I had never head of it, so I looked it up. It was definitely a wink, I know now. That's a truly hilarious artifact of the pop culture of the time. Thanks for that!

guys if you want to watch a good "bad cinderella" retelling watch chantal im märchenland, its german so idk how good it is in english buttt anyway its far more charming, FAR better story, flat jokes but on purpose edit to go into the story: the whole setup is basically that chantal is supposed to be trying to get a job but REALLY wants to be an influencer, she and her friend hang around this afternoon care or whatever and find a mirror from a yard sale or sum, they get sucked into the story n have to work through their issues to get back into their world. basic retelling but i swear it has a lot of charm

Im glad you made this video and i wtched it. This is situation that gave me the Ick and i didnt have thoughts formed on it. I thought the LGBTQIA+ had a Q for Queer AND Questioning. Its like a witchhunt where the internet decided they'd strip the safety away from The Closet, no matter what. What happebed to "come out when you are ready"? Circa 2017 Tumblr? Smh. I appreciate the real humans and the celebrities who are out, even if some of them get on my nerves (*cough cough* Kaitlyn Jenner), because they remind straight people that stright is not the normal. Then, why force people out of the closet to proof they are not "normal"? Honestly i dont mind straight actors portraying queer characters; in the show Transparents the problem wasnt the cis dude, the problem was that the cis dude harrassed the trans women. I want people to stop harrassing celebrities for their sexualities, and start harrassing them for hoarding wealth in tax havens. And only the real big celebrities.

How I missed the abortion parallels: the show had been getting worse for several years and I was so very checked out In the four years before Kill the Moon, 26 episodes released, and 17 of them sound like homework to rewatch. I was watching at that point because it was tradition with my family, and out of a sense of obligation, and a lingering affection for a way the show had stopped making me feel What more, at the start of season 8, the show took a more serious tone without getting less goofy, which on the whole just made it feel so, so lame. This was the 7th episode of that, and I came in already bored and kinda pissed off

An interesting point to this muddled but obvious take on abortion is how after the moon hatches, the environmental status quo for humanity is the same. The moon makes an exact replica and nothing else changes, something that is clearly not true for pregnancy. It flattens the nuance of the decision to a point where one choice is wrong and the other choice wouldn’t have changed anything anyway. Ps what kind of creature lays an egg immediately after hatching. They call it a baby but it becomes a mother like right away 😅

Really intertesting video. You make some strong points, and I am so with you on how awful the Riley stuff from S5 is. You also make a good cast for why some of the darker nastier storylines in S6 work. Me and a friend are going to do a deepdive into Buffy S6 soon. Your video has given me plenty to think about. Thank-you.

Honestly it's really uncanny how widespread censorship and the extermination of swathes of nsfw content is becoming. People know the internet as a messed up place full of sexual weirdos yet don't do anything to make it safer and for those who interact with those topics on a regular basis. You don't make the beach safer by banning everyone from going there, you add lifeguards, make sure they're trained, teach people how to keep watch for rips, and let others have their fun without being in active danger.

Season 6 is a little dark and depressing but at its core Buffy was a show about the difficulties of life and we can’t shy from the fact that at times life can get serious dark and depressing and I love the show for acknowledging that. I love that show didn’t shy away from the messed up relationships in season 6. Where as season 1 episode 1 had Angel who was what 2-3 hundred years old stalk a girl who wasn’t even 16 yet and sold it to me as a romance season 6 gave me Buffy and Spike but acknowledged that it was a deeply abusive relationship on both sides. Don’t get me wrong I totally ship Spuffy but I’m not gonna pretend that season 6 was anything other than a warning that not all relationships are good ones.
