From what I understand of American labor law, it can often be the safest way to fire someone to not give any reason at all. This is because if you GIVE a reason, it might be that firing someone for that reason is illegal. To then turn around and complain that the employee who doesn't know the reason does not know the reason is...uh...certainly an interesting move.

My mind doesn't go directly to trying to create an official and NLRB-recognized union, but it does definitely feel like there was a person who wanted to make some kind of demands of the management, who was able to convince many of the other employees to back them up (the group who was "poisoned").

Maybe not a “union” per say, but folks definitely wanted/deserved better for the hard work they did, and there seems to be, if I had to put it politely, an or many “rotten apples” either in management positions or positions that had sway in decisions made that was making it hard for lower level employees. 🤷‍♀️ I’ve seen it happen in the workplace; one or many bad managers come into the work space, and when underlings or second in commands raise complaints, they’re either moved to another area, driven to quit through the bad working conditions going unchanged, or being outright terminated.

  • @reis5011

okay okay ive thought about it and here's my two cents from the fact that sarah seems to empathize with the situation WP was in with said former employee i doubt that WP's explanation of what happened had anything to do with unionizing. I'm 90% certain that if they gave any indication that the former employee was making demands about better working conditions sarah would have mentioned it in this video same thing with the other people that contacted her. if she had heard form any former employees that they had been trying to advocate for themselves, collectively or individually, before getting shut down then she almost certainly would have noted that here. all of this would indicate that this wasn't the case. Like, if they had shut down the branch bc of worker action we very likely would have seen some evidence left behind (in the form of testimonies mentioning that fact for instance). However, "a mismanaged, litigious, and shady company with very questionable work practices fires a whole department suddenly and screws them all over because a 'vindictive' ex employee has convinced all the others that the company is bad & trying to screw them over" is such textbook union busting that i cant fully dismiss the possibility that it happened here

I haven't seen the original video and, frankly, I'm not even interested in seeing it. I don't even know who the people or things in question here are. I guess this is about some webcomic, etc. That said, either this is basically a criminal-level good-faith mismanagement of and incompetence on the issue, basically a master-class of how not to handle situations and not get caught up in conspiracy theories, especially in ones of your own making... ...or they are a bunch of assholes acting in bad faith, threatening and gaslighting, in which case should there be any kind of illegality on their part, they should be prosecuted and punished to the fullest extent of the law and deserve every bad thing coming their way. Frankly, the most charitable *realistic* interpretation would seem to be that bad shit happened that wasn't their fault, there was serious mismanagement that more or less *was* their fault, and although nothing is actionable, they are unwilling to make the basic good-faith gestures to right some wrongs, because they're spineless morons. For some reason, this reminds me of every case ever, where the people who didn't suffer tell the ones who did that there's no need to find out what happened or punish the guilty, because it's all in the past -- usually in very recent past. Guilty or not, this certainly makes them look guilty and I don't even know what it is they would be guilty of.

"we understand that Ms. Z is very young, and her irresponsible, unethical journalism is the result of ignorance" the seething rage felt through a screenshot on a video is scalding, i can't imagine having to read that email myself. fuckallthat edit: i’m rewatching these homestuck videos cause my partner has been getting into homestuck and i just love the email at 19:05. big GET EM energy edit 2: this whole thing boils down as Sarah and Emily doing days or weeks of research to make a video accurately and reliably explaining the history of Homestuck and Homestuck affiliated media such as Hiveswap, Homestuck 2: Beyond Canon, Friendsim, Pesterquest, etc. In said video, anything not explicitly verified with tangible proof is beforehand recommended to be taken with a grain of salt, as in, think critically about such information and don’t take it as 100% irrefutable fact. Andrew Hussie and What Pumpkin in response don’t even watch the video, but jump to threaten legal action and lie about having to deal with (nonexistent) extreme and irreparable damages to their brand because of the video they didn’t even watch; when Sarah asks what misinformation needs correcting, never clarify what this misinformation supposedly is, because again, they didn’t even watch the video. I just have to laugh. How are you gonna sit there as a company and be like “We know you did tons of research to explain this topic, but you didn’t do the kind of research we specifically would have liked, and even though we didn’t watch your video, we don’t like what you said in it.”

Coming back to this video 2 years later, and nothing has changed! Act 3 still isn't out. We've gotten yearly art asset updates twice in a row from an online fan convention. Homestuck 2 is still MIA. We finally learned what Homestuck 2.0 is because of a James Roach livestream from the previously mentioned convention. A Tumblr post from someone who worked at WP (Unsure if they still do) "revealed" that WP is out of cash. Hardly much of a reveal. Hussie and WP have gone back to radio silence. They've confirmed a majority of Gio's second article while still labeling him as a stalker. Gio is one of the people actively preserving Homestuck through the Unofficial Collection. WP's business now almost relies on his work, as the official sources are either deleted or in an awful way. These legal threats and email exchanges are almost entirely the last bit of PR the company has done. Clearly, all is well. See you all in 50 years for Act 4's release. Edit: Homestuck 2 has returned, though it is no longer Homestuck 2 and just Homestuck: Beyond Canon. OG HS2 is canned for good. New team lead by James Roach.

Okay first of all Homestuck is not "an incredibly successful IP" it is a long dead relic of early 2010s internet with it's decaying corpse being reanimated by Tumblr. Second the whole company of whatpumpkin and it's other affiliated studios have completely collapsed years ago with everyone getting fired Thirdly the millions (specifically almost 3 millions) he collected from a 2012 Kickstarter to make a game called Hiveswap (which btw isn't even close to finishing devolvement after more than 11 years of waiting) have been completely wasted by the man's own admission. I really feel bad for anyone who has ever worked with that idiot.

I had only vaguely heard of Homestuck before, and while browsing this channel's catalogue, I saw the two Homestuck videos and thought that I'd watch them to find out what on Earth it was. The first video made me curious enough that I probably would have wanted to check it out, had I not known that the second video was about legal threats. To think that was legitimately their best attempt at portraying their company in the most positive possible light is genuinely entertaining to me. I love how Sarah Z reacted with the poise and emotional restraint needed to draw information out of a frustrating person like Andrew Hussie. I wonder how all those Kickstarter contributors will feel when they learn the true nature of who they gave their money to.

This happens all the time when small businesses get big. Just because someone is able to run a little homegrown business and make money off it does not mean they're qualified to manage an expanding corporate entity with an obligation to produce, legal responsibilities, and hundreds of employees. Hussie seems like somebody that got big off a passion project, thought he could handle being a big shot, and now the weight of every bad decision he's ever made in that role is pressing down on him. His emails to Sarah come across to me like the desperate ramblings of somebody who's trying to talk their way out of a bad situation without seeming like that's what they're doing, hence the rambling non-answers and general air of affected arrogance. He knows he screwed up, the only question is how much will it cost him?

Hussie, a guy that was drawing and writing webcomics for mostly his own amusement and that of a small audience on the internet, most of them being extremely niche and appealing only to people with his kind of humor or cultural background, happens to start a webcomic that by premise and circumstance explodes in popularity to absurd degrees, becoming a cultural movement online and attracting a mass of young kids that obsessively dedicate themselves to the project. Yeah, it clearly went beyond it's original scope and it was too much to handle for him and as the years went by he started caring less and less about his own creation and leaving it up to the fans to pick up the scraps, i mean most of the good parts weren't really his anyway (art, sprites, music, animation) so the fact that by the end of it he just gave complete authority to fans in an attempt to rid himself of responsibility and then failed? yeah. Funny how people always considered him as this mastermind gigabrain that always knew what it was doing, when clearly he wasn't at all.

If he wasn't such a jerk I'd feel really bad that the thing he clearly wanted to be more known for (Psycholonials) is just some weirdass VN dumped on Steam and what he will be remembered for will be a webcomic that had a massive following and then basically went off the rails.

sarah: asks a question andrew: Did you ever hear the tragedy of Darth Plagueis The Wise? I thought not. It’s not a story the Jedi would tell you. It’s a Sith legend. Darth Plagueis was a Dark Lord of the Sith, so powerful and so wise he could use the Force to influence the midichlorians to create life… He had such a knowledge of the dark side that he could even keep the ones he cared about from dying. The dark side of the Force is a pathway to many abilities some consider to be unnatural. He became so powerful… the only thing he was afraid of was losing his power, which eventually, of course, he did. Unfortunately, he taught his apprentice everything he knew, then his apprentice killed him in his sleep. Ironic. He could save others from death, but not himself.

How often do you see a KZreadr take exception to corporate lawyers, the community fails to rally, and then the channel fades away with its tail between it's legs? It isn't that that can't happen, it's that those without backing and a slamdunk case decide employment is the better part of valor and take down the damn video. I agree. I'll confess that I saw Gio's blog posts on the Hiveswap fiasco _first,_ years long before I actually sat down this evening and finally watch these two videos, so right from the word "go," my perception of Andrew Hussie was already irreversibly tainted (with that said, I could easily infer some of what Sarah was talking about, helped by my prior experience with reading Homestuck extensively back in 2016.) (My opinions on What Pumpkin got a tad worse after I re-read those blog posts as they were updated over the years.) Just after finishing the first video (not realizing it had a follow-up until a few minutes after the fact,) I didn't think much about how my negative opinions of Hussie and WP would change. _Well..._ I didn't think 'twould change much _until_ I watched said follow-up, this video. 'Thas been an honest-to-god long time since I winced in agony, and this time 'tis over Cindy's, ''er, "threat," and Andrew Hussie's ludicrous and mental-gymnastics-ing _chain_ _of_ _emails,_ on top of the passive-malicious wording, constant usage of that "poison" euphemism, tap-dancing around the _main_ subjects they were supposed to respond to, and... don't get me started on the treatment of employees and the crediting crap. 'Twill be fucking tougher for me to come back to the web-comic I once loved so much after... all of that.
