As someone who's paranoid and struggles with depersonalization, the whole shifting thing made me really worried about all the younger kids who could develop maladaptive daydreaming and become worse and worse because they think it's normal :(

I do believe there's some legitimacy to the concept of lucid dreaming or vivid dream being useful in preparing your mind for stuff that happens when you don't sleep, or if you're not in control, having your subconscious manifest your thoughts in a way that lets you consciously analyze them, but it takes a lot of active effort to get to that point if you can, and that's as much meaning as can currently be assigned to the practice with any confidence. Maybe there's some crossover between the crowds, but I think tiktok just downgraded these peoples' intelligence to the point that having a stream of conscious feels like a revelation

don't worry! shifting is just lucid dreaming - (realising you're in a dream and kind of taking control of it so like daydreaming? if that makes sense, its actually really interesting and I suggest researching it) - but with a script preplanning what will happen and pretty much getting gaslight by the internet to think you were "shifting" and actually was there. 99% of people can't lucid dream until late adolescence (like 17-19) and even then takes up to months or years to even be able to realise they are in a dream let a lone stay in one for more than a few minutes. All these kids are at very low risk of being harmed by these trends that will soon dissipate anyway. :) I love that you care so much but please do not loose any sleep (hey! no pun intended) over this because it's near impossible for the majority of the community you are worried about to actually fall into a pattern like that. 💗

The closest I ever came to shifting (which is just lucid dreaming) was when I went to bed after taking a very strong edible. In the dream I noticed my tattoo, was surprised and thought, "wow, how could I forget that I had a tattoo?", then VIVIDLY remembered sitting in the chair at the tattoo parlor and feeling the pain from the needle. I have never gotten a tattoo.

And as I scrambled to find a way to free him, he morphed into a piece of bread. Not even once did I question my efforts to free this bread, just complete acceptance Though funnily enough I could never ever daydream as I have aphantasia when awake lmao

the saddest part about these “shifters” are the fact that they probably just have maladaptive daydreaming disorder or they heavily lucid dream and need to seek help for either one of these. it’s so frustrating to see people go around and act as if these “realities” are real and convince children to become obsessed with trying to “shift” when there’s evidence of these universes being completely fictional. it’s genuinely upsetting

I honestly need professional help tbh. I use shifting as escapism and I’ve been using it since I was 10. If I hadn’t learned about “shifting” then 10/11 year old me would’ve killed myself. The idea of me being able to escape this reality is just so appealing to me, especially since because I could’ve been able to go to whatever reality I want, I was so desperate to shift (and still kinda am) to the point that I refuse to try and question its validity bc if I discover that shifting ISNT real I would probably breakdown. I thought shifting helped my mental state but it just made it WORSE

@steph.annie.m true fans have read up on Ilvermorny though. it's definitely a form of escapism and they need therapy. also, who's paying their tuition in this universe? Ilvermorny seems like it would be cheaper than Hogwarts, and if they think this is real, why don't things like money come up? Also, why are they back in the 90s when Harry went there instead of in modern day Hogwarts? so many questions. like is Tom Felton not a person in the muggle world so he looks like a dude named Draco Malfoy back in the 90s?

I never shifted so I have no clue about it too much, even if I did shift I don't remember crap, I just remember what my body felt like (it's hard to explain because I don't really know if did even if I tried like 3 times. Do I believe in shifting? Yes, seeing as I do strongly believe in alternative realities and stuff. Do I think it's good? If you need inspiration for something then sure or need to escape every once in awhile, if you're a maladaptive daydreamer, then no, it's not healthy!)

I used to be really into shifting and I attempted it over the course of several months. I like to write, so one of the strategies I tried was to anticipate one of my characters meeting me and helping me travel to my desired reality. One of the times I tried, I saw my character come to meet me and he grabbed my hand, like I decided he would. But instead of helping me, he scowled at me and yelled that I didn't deserve to go. I remember my vision becoming clouded over, almost like tv snow. Another time, I decided I would simply wake up in a bed in an apartment in my desired reality. I was lying on my back in my bed, focusing on shifting, and after maybe fifteen minutes I realized my ceiling looked different and the walls around me were a different color. I tried to look for the other details I had planned for the apartment, but it was difficult to focus and eventually everything switched back to my real room. A lot of people have said that shifting is just lucid dreaming, and I can see why. However, I don't think I've ever had a truly lucid dream; I've become aware that I was in a dream while dreaming, but have never had complete control over a dream. Can you really do whatever you want in a lucid dream, or does everything stay within a range of logic/believability? Can unexpected things happen in a lucid dream, like the impression I got from shifting, or are you completely aware of and deciding everything that happens? I'd love to hear other people's thoughts on this, since I have no experiences I can compare with what I believed was shifting. What happened to me felt a little bit like sleep paralysis, except I didn't feel like I had been sleeping when I stopped. Also, each time I've had sleep paralysis has been very similar with one another, and these shifting attempts didn't fit the pattern. Finally, all the information I got about shifting was through KZread. Many of the sources I pulled from criticized "ShiftTok," so I've never looked at any tiktoks about shifting. I felt kind of embarrassed that people who didn't believe in it always referenced Tiktok as if it were the main forum for the community.

English isn't my first language so I'm sorry for the mistake and if it's unclear I don't believe in shifting in the way that you go in another which impossible *for me* (i respect other's beliefs), but I think that shifting is a phase between being awake and asleep, so possible in that way So kinda like lucid dream ? Because they listen to repetitive music and count in their head/out loud while being in a starship position so uhm i think they're either in a lucid dream, hypnotized or it's a placebo effect. They believe it to the point that they think it's real, let's take for example *some* extreme religious people who are obsessed with s4tan to the point that they think he's everywhere, and they'll start thinking that they're possesed so it will affect them, and their brain will make up symptoms that are only in their head but since they believe really hard in it, it'll affect their mental/physical health so it goes the same for shifters because their beliefs can change how they perceive the world, it can affect their irl life and even dreams

Let me tell you, I was hardcore into shifting my freshman year of high school. It never worked but I was doing the whole shbang. I was scripting, drinking “moon water”, dream journaling, meditating. My ass was convinced

An extremely funny part of shifting lore is that you’re supposed to be basically taking over the body of an alternate reality self for a while and then waking back up at home with barely any time passed. So your alt self doesn’t switch placed with you, they just go into the sunken place I guess?? Like can you imagine being a hogwarts student, blacking out and then waking up 4 months later in a committed relationship with the school’s most notorious whiny racist?

Shifting lore also lets you and your clone in realities keep memories etc, as they're supposed to be you. I'm not an expert and still unsure if I believe, but to my understanding, it shouldn't be a surprise, or you can even script for time to stop etc. It's confusing for sure, and people who shift to end up with canon Draco are a little... Bizarre but I mean... You do you 😂

Wish all the shifters had watched the OA then maybe it wouldn't have been cancelled and they would be doing stupid dances.
