    The meme about Twilight is that “Everyone in Twilight is far more interesting than Edward and Bella.” I’m not arguing, you have a literal corpse bride, a doctor who ignored his bloodlust to take care of his patients and a girl that can literally see into the future. I never liked Twilight, but I feel robbed because we could’ve had such an interesting book if Meyer would’ve focused on these characters

    Not to mention Jasper, a Confederate General who was changed to run a newborn vampire army sweeping across the South, who can feel and control emotions, and who gave up his entire life at the drop of a hat to become a vampire-vegan when an eccentric petite psychic just showed up one day and told him that she was his future if he just followed her wherever she went. His story, Alice's story, Rosalie's story, Carlisle's story, those are all way, way more interesting and worth exploring in depth.

    I feel like a better way for Twilight to have been done would have been to do the first book, and then the rest of the books were "spin-offs" about the other characters and their respective relationships. It's something I've kinda always thought. 😆

I had a girlfriend at the time and we broke up because I was too shy. I sat down, read the entire series, and not only did it get me over the relationship not working, it also allowed me to have something to talk about with girls and broke all the shyness. Both are probably true. You can be ignorant without malicious intent, so it's completely likely that she does love Jacob and simply doesn't realize the horrible writing decisions she put into him. Not that ignorance is an excuse, but it doesn't mean she secretly hates Jacob and is intentionally employing offensive writing in the way he is written, but rather simply writing things she simply didn't stop for five seconds to think critically about the implications of. Just because it's offensive, doesn't mean it's malicious.

So I think generally people haven’t forgotten the negative aspects of that year so much as people are just desperate to return to ANY point in time pre-pandemic. There’s also something to be said ab 2016 being one of the last years there was any actual sense of normalcy. Like, everything since then has been a downward spiral. That being said, 2016 was awful and I’d elect 2015 as being the last year things felt relatively normal before 2016 kicked off the spiral towards the abyss. It is weird though how much nostalgia can make people blind towards the negative elements of whatever it is they’re nostalgic for.

    When my friend and decided to binge watch the Twilight Series in one sitting during this renaissance to go back and forth about our first impressions, when we get to the sparkling vampires bit I really stretched the ideas as to why sparkling would make sense if vampires were killed by sunlight in the past. I was telling my friend that it could make sense that modern vampires had evolved to a point where they're skin became like a mirror to sunlight, and reflected it before it could penetrate their bodies and harm them. Their skin sparkles as a sign of reflecting said light, and may be more metallic/glass in quality, and that's the same reason why the crack and shatter. I thought it could be an interesting evolutionary adaptation if that's what the author was thinking, so vampires could now thrive in a previously inhospitable environment. Then my friend looked at as I finished my reasoning and told me "I think you're trying way too hard to make the sparkles make sense"

    I don't know if you read the books, but a fun tidbit in them was that in Twilight the stereotype about vampires burning in the sunlight came about because the vampires would sparkle so aggressively that they looked like they were on fire. When Bella first saw Edward in the sunlight she was scared because she thought he was on fire until she got close to him and actually saw him.

    Just a remark: the 'father' of all media vampires, Dracula, did not burn in the sun, either. There is a scene in the novel where he's seen walking around in sunlight, oggling a young woman with a pretty hat. So Edward and his family not burning up is fine - they're closer to Dracula for it.

  • @Khenfu_Cake

    @Khenfu_Cake

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@cayreet5992 Neither did Carmilla (which predates Dracula), she only got a bit more languid and weaker during the day. The reason Le Fanu and Stoker didn't write their vampiric characters as burning up in the sunlight is probably because vampires in Slavic folklore (which is where the modern Western idea of a vampire more or less originated from) weren't described as being harmed by the sun either. Same with fangs; they weren't described as having those either. It's generally agreed it was Nosferatu (1922) which first depicted vampires as being harmed by sunlight and from there on out it became popularized to the point, that most people nowadays assume it's a given whenever vampires are portrayed in fiction.

    I feel like Twilight honestly had a lot of potential. Imagine if it had taken the vampire angle more seriously, done better world building, and not cut out the more violent combat scenes. Sure, Twilight's vampires glitter, but they're also considerably harder to kill than most versions of the vampire archetype. They're faster, too, and arguably stronger. On its own, glittering would just be a unique trait that makes them stand out. Their society seems to have an interesting structure, with clans in different parts of the world paying homage to their "betters". There are dangerous nomads outside of that society, too, who show up only once and then aren't handled well. As this video points out, there are fascinating side characters, too. A 1300 year old "13 year old" half burned for witchcraft and serving as an enforcer for the vampire mafia? I want to read about *that* a lot more than almost anything else in the series. If the relationship between Edward and Bella had been better handled, it could have been an interesting plot that allowed readers to explore a detailed setting. It was just...yeah. The relationship was toxic, but was never treated as such, and the interesting aspects got either no attention or very little. Meyer was a lot better at coming up with ideas than handling them in a story.

    This is so off topic lol but every time I see like “audience reaction” videos from the US I’m shocked. Is it really normal for people to go “ooh” and “whoaah” and shout inside a movie theater in the US? Here in Sweden people get PISSED if you make a sound in the cinema, if you shouted and yelled like that *you’d* get *your* head ripped off.

  • @FuchsiaNeko

    I think it's only normal for big and hyped-up movies. Otherwise it's considered pretty rude. I've only had two or three times in my life where everyone in the theater were in unspoken agreement that it's ok to woop and holler at the cool moments, and they were movies like Star Wars and Harry Potter. Likewise in this vid it's Twilight. But if you do that for a movie like idk Grown Ups 2 or something people are gonna hate you

    This subject tears me up so much! On one hand, I was definitely a holier-than-thou-I'm-not-like-other-girls kid who hated Twilight for being popular and weird to me. I wholly regret that now as it was internalized misogny and I think we can all agree that on the whole, the teen girls and moms who liked Twilight were just having fun and the backlash was mostly unearned as it wasn't actually about the real problems with Twilight. That said: THERE ARE SOME REAL PROBLEMS WITH TWILIGHT! Dominic Noble did a whole video series going through the books and discussing what happened in them, and my god is it bad--not because it's dumb fluffy teen angst, but because there are genuinely concerning themes and ideas being presented, especially in the later books, that I believe contribute to the negative ideals that girls have had impressed on them for centuries relating to the unfortunate link between abuse and romance. So now I'm left feeling very "damned if I do, damned if I don't" about this entire franchise. Does anyone else feel that way?

    And then the Gale fans accused the Gale becoming a war criminal plot line of bad writing and character assassination just to resolve a love triangle like he wasn’t always callous and selfish and showed disregard for anyone else’s lives other than his own……his and Katniss’s first argument was that she saw an moral conflict over killing other children to survive and he didn’t……it’s completely believable that someone who could so easily say hunting humans isn’t any different than hunting deer” would become a war criminal as soon as he was put in a war. There’s a lot of bad writing in mockingjay but that’s not it y’all dude was always cruel and callous about killing I mean I’m a vegetarian and have been since I was a kid which the primary reason for me anyway that Peeta was obviously better was “of course I want a baker not a hunter” but let’s not pretend there’s no difference between the way Katniss hunts to feed her family and the way Gale may also be feeding his family but also seems to just really kill with no conscious. That isn't why people hate the sparkling. It's because it gives them no good reason to stay out of the daylight.
