In the past, I experienced projection from a "friend" who claimed to be "helping me to become a better person." A lot of projection & gaslighting took place, leaving me to feel not good enough. When I met this person, I was already in a dark place. As I began to heal, I realized that the things he wanted me to change about myself were areas that he lacked. He was trying to get me to conform to his standards and change who I was. He never wanted to acknowledge his wrongs nor apologize. It was always "that's how you took it" or "if you felt blank, then I apologize." The lesson I learned from that "friendship" was some people really don't like themselves, and anybody who reminds them of how they could be or how they used to be is a threat to them.
