    Awesome! I am just starting vlogging...how ever when I have my purple panda lav mic on my dji, I get some crazy weird distortion, even with the Dji at -12dB on the mic input. I am using a Google Usb C to headphone plug - after watching this video I am hoping using a USB C to TRS cable will resolve the issue!

    I'm trying to get better audio for my KZread Channel. I record my race car in a VERY loud track environment, while I'm trying to record my commentary simultaneously. At first, I just used the iPhone mic, and you couldn't hear me talking. Then, I bought the Comica Vimo S, plug and play wireless lavaliere mics, which work great at normal dB ranges, but get clipped and distorted pretty quickly when the cars erupt engine noise at the Green Flag launches. I'm on a small budget, and trying to get the best of both worlds where the end-viewer can hear the car audio, but can also hear me commentating. I was told to look for a mic with a 32-bit float, but I really can't afford to get this wrong in both time and money. Please provide any suggestions as to what would be best, and what setup would help me accomplish my goals! Feel free to watch some of my videos to provide feedback in my comments as well. Thanks!

    When you use a ADC such as the BOYA BY-K4, do you sill loose some audio details from the mic because of the analog to digital conversion? Hence best to get a smart mic sennheiser XS to avoid the conversion, as you've recommended beore?

  • @WayneRECs
    @WayneRECs9 күн бұрын

    The way the Action audio input works, any mic connected has to go through that analog to digital conversion before entering the camera. The Sennheiser XS lav does that internally. So it's really a question about which companies ADC is better. This is part of the reason why some USB-C lav mics sound better than others. Aside from different capsule components, there's also different circuitry. Would a Sennheiser product sound cleaner than a BOYA product? Maybe. Would the average person listening be able to hear an audible difference? Probably not. Additionally, the benefit of the XS lav is that there is one less point of failure or connection.

    Hi Wayne, Any recommendation for a mic, for creatiing e-biking videos with a OA4 with a chest mount and a lav mic? Be it in the city or nature. What lav mic would you recommend? I'm a beginner to audio, but looking for some street ambience and a clear voice recording.

  • @WayneRECs
    @WayneRECs13 күн бұрын

    I like using the Sennheiser XS lav (USB-C version) with my Action 4. Plugs directly into the camera, no adapters needed. It's less sensitive than some other lavs so less prone to clipping in you have it close to your mouth and I think it's only ~$60.

  • @raczyk

    @WayneRECs thank you for recommendation. And if one would also want to record ambient noise, of traffic, nature etc. Would the XS mic pick that up when close to ones face. Or could one record a second channel ambient noise somehow with a second mic? Can action 4 record multiple audio channels? Maybe a sound recorder would be a good option for ambient sound?

    just wondering .. is it beneficial to supply power (just the power) from USB Charger or Power Bank to the USB-C port on the microphone while its working with the camera through 3.5mm jack? My concern is that I want to set the preamp on my camera to the lowest possible, but since this mic doesnt have a battery.. meaning that i cannot turn the settings down to the lowest. I know that I can plug it into a computer and use the software there while still outputting the signal through 3.5mm to the camera. but what if i just plug in the power from DC charger to the microphone, will it provides power for the mic so i can lower the gain from my camera preamps? Just trying to avoid using computer or smartphone here.

    Newbie here. I bought a Zoom F3 not knowing what I was getting into. I sample tested with a cavalier mic and placed the file in Premiere pro. The sound is coming out of one speaker only. I switched the settings from stereo to mono and vice versa and still only have sound in one speaker. Is it possible to get sound from both speakers using one microphone with the F3? Thanks for the video. I like the table top set up.

  • @WayneRECs
    @WayneRECs16 күн бұрын

    The F3's Mono & Stereo recording modes cannot be configured to what you're looking for. If you've connected a single lav into CH1, in Mono mode, you will record a single mono track. If you turn on CH2 as well, you will record 2 separate mono tracks. In Stereo mode, whatever is plugged into CH1 will be recorded to the L track of a stereo file and CH2 will be the R track. Most likely what you'll need to do is to convert your Mono recording to Stereo in Premiere like in this video: kzread.info/dash/bejne/ZZWEush-n7bHgJs.htmlsi=c0AAHF3u4O7pKd4P&t=26

    In the specifications of the Rode VXLR Pro adapter, I read that the plug-in power supply is 4 Volts when the phantom power supply is 24 Volts and 48 Volts. It turns out that the Rode VXLR PRO adapter, connected to the Zoom F3 audio recorder, converts a phantom power supply of 12-48 Volts to a voltage of 4 Volts and transmits it to the Rode Lavalier Go lavalier microphone. Does this mean that in such cases it will not matter whether I set up a phantom power supply of 24 Volts or 48 Volts in the settings of the Zoom F3 audio recorder? After all, the adapter will still convert to 4 Volts, which is necessary for a lapel microphone? Most importantly, will the adapter prevent the Rode Lavalier Go Lavalier microphone from breaking (burning) due to high voltage? One point is unclear to me. They write that first you need to attach a lapel microphone to the Zoom F3 audio recorder, and then install 48 Volt phantom power in the Zoom F3 settings. Otherwise, the lavalier microphone will burn out. And doesn't the Rode VXLR Pro adapter convert 48 Volts to 4 Volts, despite the fact that before or after connecting the lapel microphone, I installed phantom power in the Zoom F3 audio recorder?

    I’m an absolute newbie to this but I bought myself a Rode NT-1 and was happy to discover it had 32-bit float, but was surprised to discover that whilst it uses a native USBC output to export that 32-bit signal, the “standard” audio interfaces don’t have USBC input. I bought a Motu M4, which is obviously not super modern, but does provide a high quality audio path. I can either use that and control the gain (which I do) or I can faff about with PC audio settings to use my mic via USB. What we are missing is really an audio interface that provides a combo jack and USB input on each channel.

    You're sort of contradicting yourself. How do the manufacturers do it? They take the 24-bit output of the ADC and write it into 32-bit float. For most microphone audio interfaces don't be surprised if the ADC is working at 12-bits! Or even 10! Speaking bluntly, 32-bit float is a marketing scam ;) It's beyond trivial to take a 16 or 24-bit recording and convert it to 32-bits. I feel you needed to take a harder stand on this issue.

  • @StefanHolmes
    @StefanHolmes20 күн бұрын

    I obviously can’t check, but my Rode NT-1 I’m told includes 4 ADC’s, each covering a different window into the 32-bit float space. No idea if that’s completely accurate, nor what the effective bit width of each ADC is, but it is difficult to deny that the results of 32-bit recording for a complete amateur like me is exactly what I’d expect, i.e. it’s more difficult for me to screw things up in a way where I can’t recover good audio.

  • @maxcanthelpit
    @maxcanthelpit20 күн бұрын

    @@StefanHolmes The 4 ADC's "theory" of how they do it is fake science if you think about it. Can you take a 4-way splitter and input your mic into four audio interfaces, each with a different gain, and then combine them? No. Conservation of energy. Each voltage would be 1/4 strength, or 1/4 weaker. Okay, so you say, you pre-amp it first and then send to 4 ADCs. Okay. But what proof to you have that 4 ADC will resolve the signal better than 1? I've not seen that. IF it were really true you'd see it in the specs, rigtht? When you shop audio interfaces do you see a section for number of ADCs? No. IF you notice a difference between 32-bit float and 24-bit fixed it's because they've added a limiter or automatic gain control in the signal path. A 100 year old technology. And it compresses the signal so degrades the fidelity. 32-bit float is a ploy to get amateurs to spend money on this new gear that has it. My latest video explains some of the business and consumer realities why this myth perpetuates. 32-bit float isn't worse. No harm if you use it. But I wouldn't because it's just a waste of compute because you're resolve to fixed at the end anyway. The "float" just means more scale, which is exponential. 32-bit float is the SAME as 24-bit fixed in precision. You can look that up on wiki.

  • @StefanHolmes
    @StefanHolmes19 күн бұрын

    @@maxcanthelpit Do I think it's electrically possible that there can be multiple ADC's separated with a crossover? Yes I do. We do the same in reverse for speakers. To be fair, I'll reserve judgement until someone does a teardown / reverse-engineer of such a mic. (maybe someone did, I haven't looked) I'm aware of the mechanics of how 32-bit float versus 24-bit fixed works. I've been poking around in and understanding file formats for 30-ish years, including the formal IEEE definitions of floating point formats. 32-bits is a ridiculous amount of headroom. Simply unnecessary. Still a great format for transporting audio data, because any format that can far exceed requirements whilst still being "cheap" to use is the perfect format. What someone might not like about it is the fact they can't hide behind it. If you screwed up your audio, you're going to have to own up to it and you can't blame your gain settings or your audio interface (especially in cases where your "interface" is simply USBC straight into a laptop). As to fidelity being degraded because of tricks that make 32-bit "work" in a mic... I'm sure that's true, but I'm not sure that's universally true. I'm not going to evangelise Rode as being perfect, I have literally no experience of their brand except for this recent (weeks, not months or years ago) purchase of an NT-1. I think it would be risky to their reputation to make completely BS claims about the tech in this mic. I'm not one to take marketing at face value, but if Rode say "hey, the noise floor is X, we have Y number of ADC's and you can't clip audio that sits within the rated max SPL (132dB!) of the mic itself", I'm going to give them some benefit of some doubt. Maybe the noise floor is really X+4dB and the max usable SPL is less than 130dB (I'd expect it to be, honestly), but that still leaves me with a mic that, to my ears, does a good job whatever mode I put it in. That being said, mine gets used mainly as a standard mic via XLR into an inexpensive MOTU M4 for realitime audio and I probably have the gain set a bit too high and I should definitely put a compressor into the path somewhere, but I'm not a pro and I'm just incrementally figuring out what's what.
