32-bit float audio in camera? Can DJI do it? - Pocket 3 & Action 4

All I want for Christmas is 32-bit float recording in camera. But is this unrealistic and am I just better off asking for a pony?
Let's talk/speculate/rant about how DJI can implement 32-bit float audio in their Osmo Pocket 3 and Osmo Action 4 cameras!

Hi Wayne, you might get lucky with your wish. When I look at my DJI Mic 2 (transparent housing), I see a very small chip in the top left. The chip is called NAU85L40 and if you look at the specifications, it can really do 32 bits and is equipped with 4 DACs. Theoretically, the Pocket 3 would have to have the same audio chip to be able to record with 3 microphones at the same time. The same probably applies to the Osmo Action 3 and 4.

At BedVlogs, camera internal 32bit float audio (and also 4 channel) is a holy grail for us. But our understanding is that Wong be possible for a long time until industry standards for video change. But, yes, we do hope that a DJi Pocket 4, Insta360 x5 and Sony FX 3v3 will be able to do that. We know how to sync multicam and crest compound clips. But we HATE needing to do that just for the audio. Thanks, as always for the great videos. - Eric ZORK Alan & Sweetie [ Professional Poets & Bed 🛏️ & Beer🍺 Vloggers ]

I like your thinking here and, as for plausibility, well, why not?! However, @16:00 as you discuss the current DJI adapter, I look at the pricing equation a little differently than your comment. And that is, if they charge this much for the current "simple" adapter, what would be the outrageous price for the 32-bit enhanced adapter?! What would it be worth (the value to you) to have 32-bit float on your $400 Action 4? The same price as an F3? The more professional your videos, probably the more you're willing to pay for this feature. But the Libra in me replies that the more professional your videos, the less likely you have an Action 4. And since the DJI Mic receiver plugs into the Action 4 with no sizing issues, would it matter if the new improved 32-bit float adapter is a little larger than the current adapter you're using? Hmm. Enjoyed your theorizing on this and, hey, I think you've been right-on with your past theories.

Great Video Wayne and if this does get realised it would stop me spending more money I don’t have 😮 hope you are well my friend !! Would be sooooo cool to just have this appear via an update.

That would indeed be a Xmas miracle, but pretty sure DJI did not pack a pair of A/D converters into the $50 adapter 😂. My money is on Sony to introduce the first camera with on board 32-bit recording. They are already kinda doing it with their digital hotshoe mics that do a great job of automatically “riding the gain” in dynamic situations. It’s virtually impossible to get them to clip.

Hi Wayne, thank you for a VERY interesting and a bit confusing clip. In my fantasies, If or when DJI launches a mic kit (like the current DJI Mic) build on the DJI Mic 2 transmitter, the receiver might do some tricks...

I would like Action 3/4 to be able to simply record only audio. Many times I need to record a simple statement and I happen to have OA3 with me. Being able to record just the sound would be very helpful. The screen could be used to display a nice waveform. So the idea would be to add a sound recorder function to OA3/4.

Do we know that the DJI Mic 2 actually has 32 bit float hardware? Hmmm. I've seen no claims from DJI about that, although the Mic 2 is being kept a bit low profile pending its independent release. Meanwhile, at least we have lossless wave format audio on the Pocket 3 (available whether or not an external mic is connected, if the new option is selected) instead of lossy AAC format. No reputable audio recording engineer would capture audio to a lossy file format. I don't see why videographers should still be doing that in 2023 with the memory card capacities now available. Did I understand you correctly that GoPro have been offering this for years? I didn't know that. It's worth mentioning that the 4 channel recording capability of the Pocket 3 now enables you to use a binaural headset such as the Sennheiser Ambeo connected to the USB-C, for ambient sound, while recording any talking-to-camera using the internal mics, and crossfading in post production. Speech by the wearer recorded on a binaural headset always sounds a bit odd, so this gives the best of both worlds. USB-C only audio was introduced on the Action 2. I wouldn't think that its presence is evidence of any 32 bit float hardware future.

I’ve tested my binaural mics (USB-C) connected directly to the Pocket 3, and when using backup mode and using the DJI Mic 2, the WAV file is mono unfortunately. When I use my binaural mics as the main mics, it records in stereo. Are you saying it’s possible to record on both the built-in mics and a USB mic simultaneously? I haven’t tried that.

people and movies have been filmed in 24bit audio for years and as far as dialog you don;t need it I don't see the hype in all this 32 bit float that people are promoting, maybe I'm just old fashion

Yep, you're old fashioned and taken to the nth degree, you don't 'need' anything, but 32bit float is a massive leap forward in audio technology. We no longer need to adjust gain, and clipping becomes a thing of the past. What's not to love about that?!

@@yankeecowboy fair enough, I wouldn't either and I'm perfectly fine with my audio gear. However I have inherited 32bit from the Pocket 3, so I now have it by default on one of my devices and it's already saved one recording - my seven year old nephew screaming at the mic 😅

oh I totally get it and I would have gone that route if I wasn't invested in the few mics I have.I recently bought the Hollyland lark max duo and I love them so I'm just careful , when it's screaming kid time I switch to my sony shotgun mic that works great as well. @@JamieFurlong
