It's OK to record audio in camera if...

For a long time, I never used the audio recorded in camera for my KZread videos. But I'm the kind of person who is always open to change. And the DJI Osmo Action 4 and RODE Videomic NTG have done that!
Do you like to record audio externally or internally in camera? Let us know in the Comments below!

KZread is not a critical listening/video format. Your audio and video is excellent and all one needs. Your approach is a breath of fresh air as compared to going gear crazy for videos that are viewed on smartphones, tablets and computers with questionable speakers/monitors. And the money saved! Bravo!

For sure Recording in camera, As moto vlogger its just the simplest way rather than having to try and sync up later. Thanks for all the help with the Audio so far Wayne, truly appreciated 👍

100% Wayne! As a documentary filmmaker I record most of my audio in camera (FX3 via shotgun to XLR), but when I add narration I record that at the studio. However, if I am just out and about and I think there might be the chance of catching some footage I often just toss an action camera on a handle and head out. I will pop a small consumer mic in the bag, but a lot of the time I am just capturing via the onboard mic in the camera. It's not great, but it does the trick. If I need to record dialog out in the field for something with that setup I will pop the mic on and go. What we have on us and can use easily is way better than the ideal setup in that specific situation.

Yes! I like it simple direct audio to the caveats. I just denoise the audio. I just use a wireless system (Sony) direct to the ZV-1. I even just use my iPhone with the NTG Go II when I don’t want carrying bagged gear. 99% don’t know and don’t care - just a clean audio

Horses for courses :) Would love to see a video on your signal chain with eq/compression and the decisions you make in the process of cleaning and boosting the level on voice recordings, and how you decide what level is good/«correct» for youtube-videos :)

Good timing on this video for me. I do a fiction podcast, and I find myself using my RODE Videomic NTG when recording effects and doing content supporting the show. (I record narration on a Shure SM7B, which cuts out other apartment-dwelling sounds.) My wife and I recently picked up an OSMO Action 4 for canoeing and hiking memories, and I've seriously in the last week been thinking, "I'm sure I could record more on the fly with the Videomic NTG and the OA4..." So, thanks for providing a good example of what's been in my head the past couple weeks.

Yes. Precisely. I used to carry a whole bag full of audio gear, Sound Devices recorder, several mics, cables... but lately found I can get excellent results by any standards using the Rode NTG, a Rode Wireless Go II system with a Rode Lavalier II and my Osmo Action 4 and (new) pocket 3 cameras. Super compact and zero complaints on sound or video quality even listening and viewing critically. Certainly so good that no-one would have a clue what I was using.

I’ve been using the videomic NTG as a out of shot boom for about a year now and I absolutely happy with the results I’ve been able to achieve. I’ll sometimes use a 10 foot aux cable to connect mic to cam, other times I’ll connect the Videomic NTG to a Saramonic Blink wireless receiver and wireless mic for those times I want or need to get further away from the camera. And since starting to use the NTG, I’ve also been recording my audio straight to camera.

Always record in camera. Because like you said, the less barrier to creating the better as long as the end results are acceptable. Always trying to hit 100% is why a lot of people end up not creating. Getting to 90% is my goal. I'll settle for 80% if it means I can get the content out sooner.

From another voice talent, camera and audio guy I have to say that for me the audio on your video is the nicest I've come across on Y.T. Before you said what you're doing, I was actually going to ask about your processing chain. I use a Rode NTG3 and an NT5 etc. But was thinking of getting a Pocket 3 or DJI Action 4 and an MKE400 but I'm blown away by that now. Thanks Brendan in Dublin, Ireland.

Great video ! I noticed the noise floor is audible within this video that we don’t normally hear within your other videos. I had the videomic Ntg and ended up getting rid of it because i had an issue of clipping regardless of my settings. I’ve been eyeing the smaller version videomic go ii which can also be connected via usb c.

For future videos, I’m going back to using the built-in features of my camera. It’s easier than syncing and juggling SD cards. I just recently used my phone because it was “easy”. I was able to edit on the phone and post. The audio was “good enough”.

If I'm not mistaken the Rode Videomic GO II will also work well with the Action 3 or 4

@5:40 "If I don't have to, [pause] then I don't feel that I need to." Now you're talking, Wayne! 🤣I knew we were related somehow!🤣 My use of my Zoom Hn1 and F3 have fallen off considerably, er, gone to zero, since I got the DJI wireless Mic system. The DJI Mic, my Rode Video Mic GO II, and the Bumblebee II argue over which will be the lucky mic I plug into the Osmo Action 4. Someday I might have to rate them 1, 2 , 3. Would you mind sharing your Action 4 settings for talking head like in this video? What is the approx distance from the camera to your face and what are your camera settings for Res/FPS, FOV, EIS Stabilization, EV, Shutter, ISO, any special Audio setting on the Action 4, etc? I remember from a previous video your intentional 1/3 screen position and you look mahvelous, BTW. Thanks for sharing this video revelation!

As much as I think the Rode Video Mic NTG is a great mic, when compared in size to the DJI Osmo Action 4, a tiny device, doesn't this mic lay clumsily on top? Maybe if you are mounting this in a home studio or indoor area, it's a nice set up, how do you achieve this set up outside? What about a vlog set up with a car mount? Wouldn't the wireless setup with a lave still be the better choice? Great videos from you, Wayne, by the way. Thank you so much

I usually shoot multicam. Combining various cameras, cheaper ones. Smartphone, mirrorless, actioncam... USB audio on smartphones using USB mics or my Rode AI Micro is indeed great. But video quality is so much better on my mirrorless...but audio sucks therein. So I still need to sync. But it all depends on the situation. Sometimes I need multiple mics, I still prefer to use my Tascam X8 or Zoom H6. I also feel they give me better control of things. But I am a lazy guy, so when it is vlogging or a talking face video, the simpler the better.

As amotovlogger I can have hundreds of files at the end of a long shoot and without any baseline where sound and video is already synced this would be practically impossible. Some videos I have 4 to 5 different cameras and even recording 2 tracks to the main camera getting all of them together in edit can be a lot of work. Here I stiill used DJI mics but this ride was around 7 hours long and I had 250 gigabytes of stuff from multiple different cameras. kzread.info/dash/bejne/dHqj1NCwgJTOhtI.html Also being able to start and stop audio recording with the main camera makes things a LOT easier. Now I use Rode Wireless pro and I wish DJI will integrate the new wireless mic 2 with the actioncamera lineup aswell like the pocket 3.

Hi, I agree with you, the less gear the easier to just press record and create something. But i have a question for as a pro. Do you think it's possible to get a good quality audio with action 4 while hiking. I want to capture as much of mature as possible and my footsteps, but internal mics are just not on the level i would be satisfied with. Because it's hiking i want to have the least amount of gear. I also want to minimalise amount of breathing into the camera (while using chest mount). Could you have some recommendations?
