    Great video! In 1975, I was 19 yrs old when I bought my first Nikon camera it was a black Nikon F2, and being a nature photographer, I got the 55mm f3.5 Micro Nikkor with it, although I wanted the 105mm 2.8 Micro Nikkor. I used my Nikon F2, for about 20 years until the light meter died. I now use the Nikon D850, arguably one of the best DSLR's ever made.

    Great video, this lens brings back a lot of memories. In 1975 I bought my first Nikon, the camera was a sexy black Nikon F2, and being a nature photographer, I paired it with the 55mm f3.5 Micro Nikkor, only because I couldn't afford the 105mm 2.8 Micro Nikkor. At the time I had heard the 55mm f3.5 Micro Nikkor's optics of the lens were near-perfect, and it was one of the sharpest lenses on the market, and possibly ever made. I used it for about fifteen years until I traded it for a different lens, which I shortly after regretted. I got back into my macro photography, but now I am using a Nikon D850 and my dream lens, the Micro Nikkor 105mm f/2.8 D, and loving it.

    Image quality is not the same as a quality image. An image can be technically perfect but lack impact. A boring shot is boring no matter what sensor size you have. If an image has a compelling subject, a sense of emotion and a strong story it doesn't matter if there's a bit of noise. Embrace the imperfections. There's too much bull about depth of field and noise surrounding micro four thirds. You don't see people pixel peeping galleries standing next to a picture saying the corners are soft and there's image noise. The compact size is enabling but it is a pity that Panasonic have produced almost full frame size bodies for their latest micro four thirds. That trend of big heavy micro four thirds really defeats the essence of what micro four thirds should be - lightweight, compact and fun.

Surprisingly, when you introduced the second Zeiss I recognized I also have a similar model Contessa. I share your admiration of the quality and design of these cameras. Any tips on using center weighed metering ? When I use my F2AS out on a bright day, I often get highlights that are over exposed (washed out is the term?). It seems I should be under exposing even though meter shows “o”, but how can I determine how much to under expose ? What if I meter instead on the green grass as if metering to mid tone grey card? Would this be best?

  • @dongummphotography
    @dongummphotography4 күн бұрын

    It is best to meter on part of the subject that looks to have an average reflectivity. Some photographers used to carry an 18% gray card they could meter off of. Backlit scenes can often be compensated for by increasing exposure by 1.5 stops.

    Good topic. Another suggestion is the older Konica rangefinders. The Konica II series in particular are gems. Superb build and a bit of a cross between a Leica II or III and an M2 with a smallish but integrated, single window rangefinder/ viewfinder and standard, non fiddly film loading. The lenses are fixed with 45mm to 50mm variations. The film counter is set manually like an M2 and the film advance and rewind are performed by knobs on top of the camera. The shutter is cocked manually as well. My version is the Konica II B-m, a budget version with a 45mm 3.5 Hexar lens. Other versions use 48-50mm F2 or F1.8 Hexanon lenses. Also the shutter release is the smoothest I have ever experienced on any camera and the leaf shutter is near silent. As mentioned the build on this version is superb but I find as the years progressed the build quality of the Konica series slowly became lesser.

    Great topic. You might also consider the Argus C series of cameras if you are in the US. I’ve been able to get a good working copy on eBay for as low as $3.99. The 50mm f/3.5 Cintar lens that comes standard with the camera is a 3-element Cooke triplet, whose design I’ve heard was derived from the Leitz Elmar you mentioned. Not as refined as the cameras you discussed, but a very serviceable entry-point into all-mechanical 35mm film rangefinders, if you can tolerate its boxy form factor and limited shutter speed.

    I absolutely love the rendition this lens produces. Its by far my favorite lens I own, I use it with my Panasonic S5. I wonder what other lenses are similar to this one, I own the Nikon 50mm 1.4 AIS and the 28mm 2.8 AIS and they are not as good. The 28mm AIS particularly is quite bad compared to this one, has much lower contrast, the image is not as smooth and the color not as saturated. I wonder what other vintage lenses can look similar to this one. I recently ordered the panasonic 20-60 lens I want to see how it compares with the 55 as a wider angle and a do everything lens. Do you have any recommendations for good lenses that can look similar to this one?

    The 55mm f3.5 Micro Nikkor is an exceptional lens. The Nikkor 105mm f2.5 AI lens is also a wonderful lens with great image quality and color rendition. I also like many of the Asahi Takumar lenses like the 55mm f2, which is super sharp and contrasty with beautiful color. Another favorite is the Leitz 35mm f3.5 Summaron. The f2.8 version is a bit sharper at the edges, but a lot more expensive. I have reviewed all of these in my videos. Thanks for watching and commenting!

    Two things that I have found with using vintage lenses on a Olympus m43 camera. 1) Lenses with elements that protrude into the camera. The Jupiter 12 35mm f/2.8 rear elements go past the lens mount into the camera. I haven't tried it as the rear element greeting the sensor would not be good for either. 2) Depth of field impacting focus peaking. It the lens is set at f/16 the depth of field will be deep and everything in that range will get the peaking edge color.

  • @dongummphotography
    @dongummphotography25 күн бұрын

    Both good points. I haven't tried the Jupiter 12 because I had the good fortune to find a 35mm f3.5 Leitz Summaron for $60. In some cases, it is better to open the lens to a wider aperture when focusing and then stop down to expose. Thanks for watching and commenting!

There aren't too many videos about Nikkors for some reason, I'm not sure why. Perhaps Nikon has always been a popular line of cameras, and content creators are looking for something a bit less common. Nikon has made some great lenses, and I will be doing more on them.

    That's maybe because on the good "vintage" Nikon DSLR's you can mount AI/AIS lenses without a converter.. I purchased a D200 dirt-cheap, for exactly that reason. It's not Full-frame, so there is the crop-factor to consider, but the D200 has a CCD-sensor and makes beautiful colours, even though it's "only" 10.2 megapixel.
