What Is The Future Of Micro Four Thirds? Here Are My Thoughts On That Question!

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

The future of the camera industry seems to always be a question. The future of Olympus and Panasonic Lumix, Micro Four Thirds camera systems is also something that is on the mind of some folks. I think the future is likely to be better than some might think.

As they always say Don, "the best camera is the one you have with you" and that's the reason why I sold my FF Canon system. In '23 when 99% of images are viewed online that adage holds better than ever. Lighter weight, smaller bulk, quality optics; these are the things that make M43 my choice.

M43 isn't that much smaller than full frame. Yes Canon is gigantic but look at Sony, they have a ton of compact options. The size differences between different sensor bodies have become homogenized over the years and it's no longer a huge advantage for M43. The two real advantages of M43 should be easier stabilization (since smaller sensor has less inertia) and wildlife telephoto advantage. Unfortunately I don't think M43 has the best telephotos. It could certainly use some downsizing as well. The signal to noise ratio you get out of bigger sensors is too appealing to consider M43 unless it can optimize those inherent small sensor advantages.

Many of us don't want a full frame pro setup, yet we want more than a 1" sensor bridge camera. For macro and birding I think MFT has a huge advantage for a larger depth of field at a faster shutter speed. Along with this the field of view gets closer to the subject. If you have a 20mp full frame and a 20mp MFT, to get the same view with the same MM lens, you will be cropping out half of your FF pixels. Giving you a 10 Mp camera in effect.

  • @professionalpotato4764

    @professionalpotato4764

The issue with that is the 10mp still has a higher lw/ph resolution than the MFT sensor. i.e. those 10mp could be sharper than an MFT image, especially in birding where cropping is often needed. Cropping the mft image further basically means it's on the same scale as a type 1 sensor or smartphone sensor.

I have a G9 mft setup for my personal use and taking pictures of some products that I build for documentation reasons. I really like the privacy aspects of not needing to rely on Google or Apple to move my photos from the camera to the computer. This is super important to me. What I wish these cameras could do better is digital zoom, especially for video use. I like to use primes for the light gathering and color quality, but sometimes I need some modest zoom control and this is lacking vs common cell phones.

i've known a couple amateur photogs that went pro. both of them were m43 shooters at the start and both were in sports mostly. the ability to get a lot of length for relatively cheap in m43 systems let them do things they never could have afforded doing in full frame. that was their opinion, not mine. i'm just a happy hobbiest with no intention to do more than i enjoy in any given moment. m43 works great for me and the ability to adapt vintage lenses cheaply and play around with them is all i really care to have at the moment. i think m43 is a great path for folks like me. the fact that you can get a lumix g3 and an adapted minolta 50mm, or whatever focal length and vintage character appeals to you, all for under $150 makes it very accessible and low risk. the gear will resell for about the same price so mostly you're just out shipping and time in the end if you don't like it.

I think it you look at sales in the major camera markets of Japan, Asia-Pacific, Europe, most people are not buying the high-end professional cameras nor full frame. Most people prefer the smaller size cameras. In fact the Olympus E-PL10 is sitting at No.4 best seller. The basic point and shoot compact cameras are being discontinued as they cannot compete with mobile phones now but the high end ones are selling, Ricoh GR3. LX100, Ollie Tough. That has given rise to false rumours that MFT is being discontinued, not true. There are new sensors in the wings with astounding capabilities, already in production as scientific cameras, but they are 4/3 and are not nor will be FF. The money is coming from the automotive industry, they will not develop to larger sensor sizes when there is no need to do so. In terms of funding cameras are cottage industry compared to cars, they cannot afford it. If they succeed, and they already have, in a couple of years time, it may spell the death knell of full frame and APS-C. They simply won't be able to compete with less than one photon above noise sensitivity, well-depth and DR off the chart and for all practical purposes no upper ISO limit. That tech is already here, it just has not been put into a consumer camera yet. Full frame has to have the most dynamic range? But they don't. Not really. Some have less DR than an Ollie E-M10. I have no idea where this notion comes from, it's not backed up by fact. It's only N.America that thinks "Micro" is derogatory, the rest of the world thinks small is good. Perhaps they should have named it "Mirrorless Four Thirds".

Hi Don, another interesting video to get the thought buds simmering. Seems like we'll never stop talking about M43 this way, but hey that means it'll be around for a while yet. I'm not sure that M43 necessarily exhibits less dynamic range than larger sensors. What is captured depends on so many things, especially nailing the correct exposure. Anyway, my crystal ball tells me M43 will fade long long away and some folk will say 'told you so' with great glee. Then my grand-kids and their friends will 'discover' this cool system and M43 will rebound in similar fashion to the way film has in recent times. It also tells me not to hold my breath waiting for Pentax to release a film camera, though if anyone is capable of pursuing such folly its Pentax, I love 'em. Take care.

Always excellent and well reasoned reflections... The M4/3 is a system of all advantages in modern digital photographic technology, while recalling that Olympus is part of the history and modernization of old and new school photographic technology, which together with Panasonic have given way to the development of modern Mirrorless. The M4/3 system and the specific dimensions of its sensor have been specially designed to have advantages, with a view towards the future of more compact systems, and lower costs, and in fact as regards the lenses, the economic advantage of prices and smaller dimensions, in proportion to the equivalent Full Frame lenses, goes to all advantage of the M4/3 system. But many other advantages of the M4/3, one of these is the stabilization of the sensor, the greater depth of field with the same aperture and focal length with the FF system, technically you always look for a better depth of field and not with its greater detail , to the advantage of contextualizing the scene, the blurred is a purely artistic factor. Although the dimensions of the modern FF are comparable, and often lower than the Mirrorless M4/3, see in fact the G9 or the GH6, but the lenses are not, they are always and much lower both in terms of dimensions and production prices, but also the same Top-of-the-range mirrorless cameras such as the GH6 and OM-1, have a high build quality and performance equal to and superior to FF cameras, with double and often triple the price. There may still be doubts about the ability of high ISOs, but today, 3200 is quite usable today and 6400 is well manageable, even reaching 12800, and even exceeding them. But at least in photography even the professionals who use the FF system, in very important jobs they normally work in a range that is usually always at 100-200, on occasions they reach 3200, whether they are professionals who use FF, APSC or M4/3 , all of them always use external lights, and of a lot of quality. When there was the high ISO noise difference gap between FF and M4/3, the FF system didn't shine at high ISO either. In the technological field of photography, what seemed impossible yesterday is now normal practice, and in the near future the quality will always be better, and the manufacturers' priority will be to further reduce costs for the same better quality. The M4/3's sensor is now back-illuminated and stacked with a gain and two stop (OM-1) improvement in digital noise compared to a normal penultimate generation M4/3 sensor, and the GH6 did a giant leap in digital noise, and with a new non-stacked sensor. Tomorrow who knows what technology still holds for the better in this sector..... by me😀

“We expect that still images [from smartphones] will exceed the image quality of single-lens reflex cameras within the next few years,” said Terushi Shimizu, president and CEO of Sony Semiconductor Solutions (SSS). That's from a Yahoo Finance article in June 2022. Personally I think M43 will be around for a while yet as the form factor vs. image quality is a very good balance and smartphones aren't great on an operational/controls level. Good topic and balanced presentation.

MFT might be fun, but MFT also has professional advantages as well. For example the greater depth of field is helpful in product photography and macro work. Macro on MFT is especially interesting now that Olympus has released the 90mm f3.5 Macro. It means I can sell my Canon EF 180mm f3.5L Macro lens. I love that lens, ho-boy, has it given me some great images over the years. But the new Olympus 90mm will give me the goodness of the Canon 180, but with half the weight and size plus extra depth of field. I switched from Canon to MFT a couple of years ago, and have loved the change. Just came back from India with a G9, and that camera was such a pleasure compared to the old days of lugging a 1Dx and lenses around various countries. MFT for the win!

The total depth you get in most cases, with the MFT camera, using pretty much wide-open apertures, is pretty cool for use in street photography. The format size is neat too, though you crop to print. I use the Lumix Gx-9 on the street, which locks in a focus quickly and with great accuracy. The Canon RP is decent in use for the street, though I hate flippy screens. Looks like they are really enticing people these days into the full frame world, with lovely cameras, such as the Nikon Z5 for $1,100 USD. Really, not that heavy and pretty compact. Throw an inexpensive 40mm on there, and bingo, you got a full-frame street shooter. My RP was purchased for $999 with a zoom lens and no tax, on special sale. The 50mm is well under $200 everyday price. I will say it needed the grip, and thus a few bucks more. It is amazing, over the years how many great deals there have been on MFT cameras and lenses, the GX-9 + 12-60mm for $799 USD, is a bargain. It has more than enough quality wise to satisfy one, at least for what I do. The Olympus PEN PL-8 is so charming and cost me next to nothing. Throw a 14mm Lumix lens, made in Japan, on there and you have a wide-angle street shooter. It only lacks the setting for minimum shutter speed. For 25mm, I do recommend Olympus -- same with that wonderful 45mm Olympus, but the Lumix 30mm macro is a great all around lens. If one buys into the Fujifilm system, as in being married to their glass, then you do have a nice compact system with them as well in APS-C. You mentioned the return Pentax -- I loved my Pentax SF-1 back in my film years. I am done with film however. Digital advantages overwhelm anything offered to the positive for use of film. I do not plan on returning to film. If you have a minute or two, my stuff is on the Web -- use my full name, and I am found. Take care, Loren Schwiderski.

I do social photography and one point I would like to highlight is that people feel less intimidated by such a small camera. It looks more like an accessory in the clothes and parties where I do photography, it is more important to go unnoticed and not hinder people who are having a party. People are not going to notice the difference of a full frame and the 43 format is more square, so it fits better to social networks.

Couldn't agree more. For me, by far, the biggest advantage that MFT offers; and you can't really overestimate how important this is: MFT cameras are both good to satisfy the need for having a good camera, while at the same time being compact enough to be able to take it with you without it being a hindrance. I have both a Sony full frame and a E-PL8, the E-PL8 is the camera I have with me most often. Just having that with me is such an enrichment. When I don't have a camera with me, I don't feel complete. Having a smartphone is great but it just doesn't fill that need. And the Sony full frame, I love my Sony full frame, but there is just no way that I would be able to take that camera system with me all the time. I like having big pockets, and my E-PL8 with a 20mm f1.7 prime, just fits in one of my pockets just fine. MFT is just too good a thing for it to disappear. I quietly think that there will come an MFT revival at some point.

I have both full-frame and MFT mirrorless cameras, and I often find that the pictures out of the MFT cameras look cleaner than the ones from my full-frame camera. Of course my full frame is quite old, it's an original A7 that doesn't have IBIS. The superior IBIS on most MFTs systems can often compensate for the smaller sensor in low-light situations in my experience. As in, it is much easier to shoot with a long shutter time with a good IBIS. Those big chunky full-frame sensors are simply much more difficult to stabilize.

My guess is that if we had two professional photographers, one shooting Full Frame and the other shooting M4/3s, taking the exact same shots, and the photos are printed to 8x10s, most people wouldn't be able to tell the difference between the two same shots. Even harder would be to see a single print and tell us was it Full Frame or M4/3s ? It's only at the extreme end does the difference show, like very low light, extreme cropping, and a very high contrast subject.

It is normally easier for the general public to access micro 4/3 than full frame: lighter, cheaper (in general). But the professional / non-professional distinction is not fair: it depends above all on your use because the image quality will be there in both cases.

I bought an Olympus EM-5 Mark III on discount when the OM5 came out. Great deal especially since the newer model is practically identical. I expected a downgrade in photo quality from my Canon 7D but I really can't tell any difference between M43 and APS-C in terms of performance and in some areas the Olympus is better, especially with video. And that's before factoring in the lighter weight and compact form factor.

One important factor also needs to be considered is the R&D. 35mm had a bright future ahead with the Japanese companies involvements back then, while the question is OM System investing more money into R&D and submitting new patents? As well, what we have seen so far probably are products already been developed or work in progress. From a consumer POV, more choices are better than one size fits all. Although as a business producing a better mousetrap or niche product, it may not be worthwhile for a large organization because business answers to the shareholders, not the customers.

I look on full frame as something akin to the man who had to walk in front of automobiles carrying a red flag in the UK. In case it frightened the horses. It's a format that acts as a drag on the digital world of cameras. True, it was the King back in the days when film technology was King. That doesn't mean it's King now. In fact, the mobile phone with its tiny sensor is arguably King many times over, with each of the main mobile phone makers selling more cameras per year than the whole of the camera only businesses put together. So format doesn't really matter anymore. All that matters is what you like using. If it gives you the results you want, who is to say you're wrong in your choice.. I think Micro Four Thirds has a big enough market to survive as long as the full frame market, but just like glass plate technology of the 1850s, I don't expect either to be around forever.

The printer was asked to figure out what photos were from micro four thirds and full frame. He did not get it right and admitted his choice was random because he could not tell the difference. I feel so far ahead of the curve. I was shooting Micro Four Thirds for work before it was cool, simply using a tripod and longer exposures to make up for the higher noise floor compared to full frame. Then switched to cellphones for event coverage and even set shots outdoors once I saw quality get to the point where I didn't feel bad about publishing them. But I do have the itch to get back into M4:3rds, because the compact pancakes and primes within the system are lovely and less expensive than for others. Just need to find the right body, given how beat up the ones I have are.

Don, thanks for these thoughts. I love M43, esp. my Pens, but I also use Fuji. OMDS is missing a huge, huge opportunity. The Fuji X100V and the Ricoh GR cameras are street photography giants. Where is OMDS? Well, they have an E-P7 that wasn't even released in the U.S. That's not going to compete. I know there are rumors of a Pen-F Mark II, but if that's going to happen, it needs to happen ASAP. I know the Pen series can compete with X100 and Ricoh, but new versions of these cameras are coming in 2024. OMDS needs to market NOW that they plan on competing in this segment. Start teasing something exciting, even if release is a few months away. They are not in the conversation now, and they need to be. Too slow in making something happen. Thx for letting me rant. E-P5 is still my fave.

For me, the main limitations of Micro Four Thirds cameras are: 1. Resolution. I do a lot of landscape photography and 16MP just doesn't cut it for this application. 2. Lack of dynamic range. In fairness, this is an inherent limitation of the M43 sensor format and it all boils down to simple physics. 3. Colour science not being up to scratch. I used to own a Panasonic G7 and found its colours to be muted, and a little flat, and it was hard to improve the colours in Lightroom without introducing all kinds of weird artifacts. Olympus cameras have better colour, but their cameras and lenses are expensive. 4. Problematic autofocus. Panasonic are supposedly going to bring out a new camera later this year that will have PDAF, thus mostly fixing classic M43 AF problems once and for all. For me, the ideal M43 camera would be something the size of an Olympus E-PL series camera with at least a 20MP sensor without a low-pass or anti-alias filter, good colour science, with the ability to do pixel shifting to achieve 80MP of resolution like the OM-1 does. A pop-up EVF a la Sony RX100V would be nice too, but not essential. I could live without IBIS so long as the lenses offer some sort of stabilization. Slap a 12mm or 17mm wide angle lens on that puppy, and you'd have a killer compact landscape and street photography camera that you could literally throw in a pocket. The closest I've been able to get to that kind of setup is my Sony a6600 and a Samyang 24mm lens (36mm in 35mm format). Sony makes a 16mm E-mount pancake lens, but it's an old design, made for Sony's early a-series mirrorless cameras, and, because it only resolves up to 12 - 14MP, is not a good match for alpha-series cameras with 24MP sensors. So far, Sony have not seen fit to make a replacement lens. Guess they must want people to buy their much bigger and vastly more expensive G-series 16mm lenses instead. Full frame cameras solve the dynamic range, resolution and colour science problems that M43 cameras pose, but they do so at a very hefty price and at the cost of heavier, bigger, bulkier bodies and lenses. My personal sense is that once camera makers find a way to make full-frame cameras cheaper without sacrificing quality or features, both M43 and APS-C may well go the way of the dodo bird. Canon are coming close with their recently released R8 FF camera, which sells for $2299CAD with a 24-50 RF kit lens, putting it squarely into OM-1 territory, where the body sells for $2499CAD and with a lens, $3299, or the OM-5, which sells for $1999 for a body with 12-45mm kit lens. The other possibility is that the manufacturers will make FF cameras for pros and serious hobbyists, and then make compact cameras that leverage computational photography and some of the advanced smartphone camera technologies that are just coming out.

I think the concept of MFT is sound and I agree with. many of the points you make in this video. The companies behind them should really focus on the size advantage which seems both have abandoned to some degree and then make competitive products (OM-5 is a nice camera in a vacuum but not exactly in 2023). The OM-5 should have had the new sensor, new AF, new AI JPEG engine, even if that would have raised the price to $1500-$1700 USD. The GM5 never had a successor, and that's something in size no one else could touch. A well done PenF II (articulated LCD, new sensor, processor, etc.) is kinda overdue but not clear if OMDS is going to follow up with something "Not wildlife." The smaller Olympus primes should be re-released in weather sealed form to match the weather sealed body *while keeping small*. The lack of modern semi-pro *small* sized models to me is the real threat to MFT, as the competition has shrunk.

As you say, in the past the dimensions of 35mm film were imposed on larger formats because smaller and lighter equipment could be designed (ie practical). With the micro four thirds system we can say the same, they are more practical equipment (no matter where you look at it) with respect to those of the classic 24x36mm (wrongly called full frame). Why does this classic format continue to prevail over smaller alternatives that are more consistent with the digital world? Simple, it is a matter of interest for the manufacturers who had a great display of optical and camera designs for those classic 24x36mm dimensions and have known how to sell this absurd need to the general public (mostly due to ignorance and because the human being it is customary). After all that was easier than having to innovate (as Olympus did). (Personally, I think that those manufacturers defending the 24x36mm have taken us for a ride)😅

When Olympus sold their imaging division, I sold my Olympus gear and switched to Fuji. Had been thinking about a switch to Fuji for awhile already anyway. I do not think OM System will move micro 4/3 forward. I'm convinced the OM-1 was already designed and ready to go when OM System bought Olympus. That is probably why it was the last Olympus branded camera. The OM-5 I think is a good indication of what to expect from OM System. There was no innovation with that camera. No new sensor. They didn't even update the USB or menu system, just rebadged the EM-5 iii and stuck in some electronics from the EM-1. I don't think micro 4/3 will disappear, but it will be left behind more and more as the other camera manufactures keep innovating and moving forward. My new XT5 has a 40 mega pixel sensor and it really is a fun camera to use with the all the retro dials. I do miss the 4:3 aspect ratio of the Olympus sensor. I always set my camera to 3:2 and that gave me some wiggle room for when I was a bit sloppy with my composition. And I do regret selling my Pen-f. That was a fun camera. I should have kept that with the three small primes I had. But it's too late now. Will trade in my XT4 when Fuji update the XE4 or XPRO3 to the new sensor.

I think the format will survive for three reasons. Bang for the buck which is influenced by wide availability of numerous Olympus and Lumix cameras and lenses in new and used condition. The selection of larger format mirror less formats are much more limited and higher in price. Second reason is that a large percentage of photographers are getting older and wiser and value a lighter kit that doesn't sacrifice quality. The third reason is the continuing growth of content creators that use these "hybrid" micro 4/3 cameras for video production more than for still photography. If I could get a affordable digital back for my medium format Pentax or Mamiya 645 I would try medium format digital for fun. An affordable back doesn't exist.

There's so much potential in M43 and I hope development continues. They really need to leverage on their strengths and churn out more products. Some things that could be done 1) OM-5ii in the next 1-2 years. At least put in the UBS-C. OM-5 was a disappointing firmware update. 2) Weather-sealed primes. Olympus keeps marketing their high end weather sealed bodies, but what about the enthusiast level of lenses? Not everyone will buy the Pro line. None of the f/1.8 lenses are weather sealed I believe. Compact weather sealed primes are great and Fujifilm has already proven the concept works. 3) Target street photographers with monochrome sensors, new rangefinder style body, maybe even manual focus lenses with exif data? Throw in a premium 9.44mil dot EVF and I believe that would be enticing. 4) Smartphone integration. Enable a high level of image editing in-camera (tone curves/HSL etc), with simple 1-step transfers to smartphones for social media sharing. Work with Apple and Android to facilitate idk, something like Airdrop but for cameras? 5) Bring out more interesting, good value telephoto lenses. The recent Nikon lenses have somewhat made the M43 lenses obsolete. The 400mm f/4.5 VR from Nikon weighs & costs almost exactly the same as a 200mm f/2.8 from Panasonic!!

The logical step would be for m4/3 to embrace its unique selling point, and produce a high quality pocket camera. However, that ship has sailed, and micro four thirds enthusiasts have split into serious video users, and photographers wanting a half-pint version of professional cameras in larger formats. I like m4/3 for the same reason as early Leica 35mm enthusiasts, the output is plenty good enough for something that isn't an inconvenience - which places me into an uncommercial minority. For still photography micro four thirds has become an old person's format, often birders who can't or won't carry bigger gear. While they have money to spend it remains to be seen if the demographic is big enough to succeed in a competitive market.

I don’t need the wider f1.2 apertures and appreciate the smaller sizes of the f1.8 and f2 lenses. But, it would be great if they did mk2 versions of these lenses that were weather sealed to pair with the likes of the OM5. Akin to the small weather sealed f2 primes of Fuji, which appeal to me for that reason alone. I’ve been saying this for a few years now. Perhaps they should test the water by doing it with the 17mm f1.8, my most used lens. A weather sealed pen f, with a weather sealed 17mm f1.8 would sell like hotcakes and provide the x100v with some serious competition (particularly if it has live ND built in). With IBIS as well, which Fuji don’t have in their x100 line atm

Em1 Mkii user here; kinda pessimistic about the future of m43. IMO the future would move towards mobile for casual users and FF for pro/enthusiasts. the weight/size argument may not be strictly true anymore, at least the difference is not as big as it used to be. (eg: if you compare a7c+tamron 28-200 vs OM-1 12-100 f4).

There will always be some size advantage for M43. It may not be huge but physics demands a bigger lens for FF. As long as there is sufficient demand, M43 will be around. Thanks for watching!

As a former Olympus user, (which i still use on occasion) I agree with everything you said. However I've noticed cost creeping up to Full Frame cost, and with someone looking to buy into a new system full frame is a no brainer. As much as I would like to see OM Systems continue to grow as a company I don't think they will be around long term unfortunately and that is why I decided to move to Sony.

Don’t disagree with anything you said but the video was about the future. In this case we have to answer the question about where OMDS is going. In this case it is clear that they are focusing on becoming even more ‘niche’ by concentrating on nature, sports and macro. I don’t see any focus on the things you mentioned like travel, portraits etc or even popular camera styles like the pen series like the ones round your neck. I love Olympus in its breadth of appeal but I am not convinced yet that OMDS will maintain that attractiveness. The costs are also becoming prohibitive. Personally I have retained my e-m 1 mk iii but I have also invested in a Sony a7 ii which is just as small and opens up the use of vintage glass as well. Still each to their own eh?

Don, you are omitting a major issue with Micro Four Thirds and its future. Both Panasonic and OM Digital have chosen a market strategy that exclusively focuses on the premium market segment with high margins. Panasonic basically ONLY ships the GH6 at this point - all of their other camera bodies are discontinued. All new lens releases from Panasonic are professional grade, big and heavy lenses optimized for video on the GH6. OM Digital has a similar high margin, top end strategy for outdoor and wildlife enthusiasts where they essentially only have one flagship camera that is considerably more expensive (and sophisticated) than many other offerings with higher image quality and enough features for the average user. Not everyone goes hunting for wildlife images in the Antarctica with a USD7,000 telephoto lens on the OM-1. Or shoots bugs with a unicorn macro lens that almost costs Leica money. There is no more E-M10 line, no more GX line, no more G line, no more Pen lines. Micro Four Thirds has no pro-sumer future, that is not a value proposition anymore for Panasonic or OM Digital.

First thing all mirrorless System that has been created 10 years all were geared to enthusiast and not professionals. Also all of the systems used small image sensor. Nikon and Pentax used 1 inch sensor and failed from the start. Only m43, Fuji Xmount, Sony Emount and Canon EOS-M gained marked were the last 3 system are APS-C. Second, at that time the market was selling 210 million cameras which 20 million was interchangeable cameras. Today the market is around 10 million cameras sold which 8 million are ILC and m43 has only around 7% market share and APS-C and full frame has 93% market share. Due to this market share others get revenue and invest in development. Olympus had 6000 employees and now OM Systems has now 2000 employee. Canon has around 40% marketshare and they are the only one who are introducing new sensor and processors for prices under USD 1500. This is due economies of scale where m43 does not have. Third the camera you always have is your smartphone. Maitanis visión is the smartphone.

I think M43 size arguments just don’t hold water any longer. Perhaps when they were compared to DSLR’s - but in today’s market - its not that compact against FF and APSC. With that reality - the price of the system is just not priced right in the market where its easily within reach of FF and APSC. While it has some unique features - it still can’t be justified. Drop the prices $500-700 and there would be a strong argument.

Image quality is not the same as a quality image. An image can be technically perfect but lack impact. A boring shot is boring no matter what sensor size you have. If an image has a compelling subject, a sense of emotion and a strong story it doesn't matter if there's a bit of noise. Embrace the imperfections. There's too much bull about depth of field and noise surrounding micro four thirds. You don't see people pixel peeping galleries standing next to a picture saying the corners are soft and there's image noise. The compact size is enabling but it is a pity that Panasonic have produced almost full frame size bodies for their latest micro four thirds. That trend of big heavy micro four thirds really defeats the essence of what micro four thirds should be - lightweight, compact and fun.

When will MFT sensors get up to 24 or 30 or 40 MP? 24 MP next year? 30 within a couple? 40 within five? I would live to have a better sense of when such sensors will become available. The way tech is advancing and evolving, it's probably just a matter of when, not if, and probably before long. I would bet that 100 MP MFT cameras will become available, probably well within the lifetimes of some people here. Does anyone have a good sense of how quickly these sorts of changes are happening, and when such sensors (24, 30, 40 especially) are likely to become available? When will future MFT cameras become the equals of today's full-frame cameras (in resolution, low-light performance, and dynamic range in particular)?

@@dongummphotography I agree that it's not so important for most purposes. What about the real advantages that full-frame cameras have (they've been covered in many comparisons, and include low-light performance, higher resolution and detail, more room to crop, etc.)? What Im wondering, essentially, is how long (roughly) do people in the know - those who are closer to the industry and who have a better feel for sensor evolution - how long do they think, or best-guess, it will be before the best MFT cameras of the future equal or exceed the performance of the best full-frame cameras of today?
