Creating Film Like Images with Micro Four Thirds Cameras!

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Lots of digital cameras today can make super clean, noise free images but if you want the mood that film images can create, try older Micro Four Thirds Cameras. Older Micro 4/3 cameras like the Olympus EP1 can create images with much the appearance and mood of film images. Dig those older Micro Four Thirds cameras out of the closet and use them as a creative tool!

You have inspired me to take out my exp1 again. The image stabiliser gave up the ghost some time ago but I guess that will make it look even more like a film camera! Cheers.

@terrynoon8467 my EP1 has fallen to the same fate. The sensor is still centered well enough for me to use it at this point but I may have to open it up and secure the sensor in a centered position if it moves.

As an old film photographer I have spent many hours looking at Tri x grain in prints. I thought your shots of the bridge particularly had the feel of film grain. I use m4/3 often shoot in monochrome directly so I see a B&W image in the viewfinder. That allows one to directly visualise the tones instead of having to mentally pre-visualise as Ansel Adam’s taught us to do with film. On my EM5 Mark lll I set the Picture Mode to Monochrome and to capture both jpeg and RAW. That way I get to see B&W directly but get all the extra data of the RAW file work with in post. I don’t know how that works in older Olympus menus, but seeing the transmutation of the world directly into monochrome is worth trying.

I have done the same myself. In fact, I have a video about doing that somewhere back on the list. Shooting in monochrome is a great way to learn to see things in black and white. Thanks for watching and commenting!

Is that cause of more grain? [E-P1 being better than E-P5 for night shots] I just had a closer look at a couple of town-lights / night-time shots I took recently @ 1000 ISO with my E-PL2 and gotta say they do look nice...

Hello sir, today I discovered your channel on KZread, I live less than half a mile from where you took the photos of the lake bridge and where the fishermen stand. I like the advice from your channel. I also do film photography ,I am in a project to scan all my negatives to be able to share them on Instagram, I think I have seen you here in the lake park. I hope that one day we can talk about photography and share thoughts and some prints

Really enjoyed your video, as it’s probably one of the best videos promoting and demonstrating grain with noise, especially with your choice of subject. You’re close to achieving something of the pictorialist qualities. Next step would be to emulate the Autochrome imagery. Game set and match !! Great work !

Emulating autochrome images would be amazing. Have to think about that.... I had a color separation camera at one time that had monochromatic dichroic beam splitters. The camera would create three 4x5 negatives, each representing one color. The three black and white negatives were each printed through the appropriate color filter to create a color image. This was used for early color images in newspapers.

I agree with you but all this retro enthusiasm is driving up the price on these older classics. What are your thoughts on the ancient ccd sensors? Those have their fans too and are enjoying a resurgence.

I used some Fuji S2 cameras in the early 2000s that had a CCD sensor. They took pretty amazing pictures for a 6MP camera. The studio I worked for routinely had 16X20 inch prints made from those cameras that looked great. Todays digital cameras create images that are, in some peoples opinions, too perfect. Clinical is a term I have heard to describe them. The inherent flaws or imperfections of the older cameras lend a certain character to the images much like different films do. Makes me kinda think about finding one of those old S2 cameras....
