Will AI Kill The Photography Industry?

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

AI or Artificial Intelligence is going to impact our society in ways we can't even currently imagine. Will it ruin the photography industry? It is certainly going to impact it. Camera equipment and software will change and jobs will be lost. How will it all play out?

For amateur photographers AI will change things as much as they allow it to change. What’s the use of having a creative hobby if you leave everything up to AI ? The fun is in the finding of an individual style, in he creative process of painting a certain mood or story. Of course in post production AI may save time and help in developing a consistent style.

Ive enjoyed your videos. Im a returning photographer. Im off to AUS from UK in December, dug my Nikon DSLR out, and thought 'do i wanna lug that around?'. Didn't think my phone would satisfy, so after watching several videos, including yours I bought a OMD-10 mkIV. My test shots have been impressive. Thanks for you M43 input.

The phrase 'the camera never lies' will be removed from the dictionary for being factually inaccurate. Interesting thoughts Don. With every new technology brings job losses, or the deskilling of jobs, but it also creates jobs that we would never have anticipated. You could always use Izotope RX10 to try to remove the downtown traffic noise, it's a form of AI but it's not AI in the sense that it can think, be independent and make decisions for itself like a sentient being. There are numerous different definitions of AI and the term AI often gets quoted in the media without anyone pinning down what they mean by it, thus creating the potential for hysteria. We need a watertight definition and some guidelines about its usage especially its future deployment in warfare.

To paraphrase Captain Kirk form Star trek, "There are some things that photographers need to do to be photographers, and AI could take that away." AI assisting photography is one thing, but if it does to much, where is the natural creative shots brought about by mistakes, that turn a mundane shot into a great shot. Film photography is now a hobbyist format that used to be the only format. Digital cameras now have features that can create shots that look like film shots when printed or displayed. Is AI really the progress we want, can we avoid it? I think not.

My take is that larger format cameras will make less and less sense. Their advantages of increased dynamic range, better low ISO performance, increased resolution, etc., are all easily corrected by computer. There will likely be a benefit to a dedicated camera and interchangeable lenses, but larger formats seem to make less sense to me. All the best.
