The Grateful Therapist

The Grateful Therapist

What can you expect when you go to Therapy? What might your psychotherapist talk with you about? This channel explores some of my favorite concepts in the world of Marriage & Family Therapy. I will simplify therapy terms and concepts, and share my favorite interventions used in Therapy such as : Communication Skills, Taking Personal Responsibility, Boundaries, and Learning and Growing so you can be the best possible version of yourself. Therapy is not scary! Your Therapist is there to support you and help you know yourself better and make the best choices so you can have a healthy, happier life.
I have been an LMFT in California for Over a decade. I work mostly with children, Teens and Families. I am so grateful to have a job I absolutely Love! I look forward to sharing it with you.

    I'm watching this because emotionally I am stuck in teenagehood and I'm studying to be a counselor who wants to help teens, cause I would have benefitted from life being explained this way to me... Thank you for this perspective!

    i'm under the impression that, as the parent or guardian, they can request to see any or all progress notes, or request any information that they want to know about . i dont believe it is always completely confidential for teenagers, and i've been in situations where, due to risk of the severity of the substance being experimented, i was advised and required to involve the parent, which ultimately broke the rapport and trust completely.

    I have a question. How do you help a teen who does excuse themselves for a time out when angered and are being made fun of or mocked while being accused of running away from problems by family?

  • @dakine4238
    @dakine4238Ай бұрын

    In this case it seems like the teen is the mature one with that family. How about talking to the family to see why they are behaving that way or just ignore it and do what's needed to calm down. We can't control their behavior but it's not helping the situation at all.

    I like most of what I've heard on your channel, but i think the confidentiality is extremely detrimental. I don't think it's right for a therapist to conceal from a parent if they know te minor child is engaging in risky behavior. To me that's horribly irresponsible. Also, sometimes teens will triangulate, & when they don't want to acknowledge that something they're doing is resulting in an undesired outcome they're experiencing or the therapist is asking them about a certain behavior, some teens will lie about their parents or other people to the therapist & place blame on them to avoid personal accountability Then a therapist might actually believe these lies & inadvertantly make false reports about people they haven't even taken the time to know, based soley on the minor's words. Some people will say "children would never lie," but when you ask a therapist or google what to do if your child is lying, the advise you'll find is often, "Don't worry, lying is a perfectly normal part of childhood," so which is it, "children don't lie," or "it's totally normal for children to lie?"

    Yeah I've realized more and more that I'm very introverted I mean it hurts being in real life. I grew up around alot of extroverted people that kind of abused my personality but I'm here and I keep trying. It's hard to believe this because I feel kind of muted but I know when I love someone I can speak freely so that helps
