    Bobby, what would you recommend off corner of patio ? Lions head Japanese maple or paper bark maple ?

  • @hobbybobby3398
    @hobbybobby339816 күн бұрын

    Probably the Acer griseum. A. palm 'Shishigashira' tends to be a fairly low branching specimen, and the bark on the griseum is much more interesting. Just my opinion, but that's what I'd do if placing one 10ft, or so, off a patio.

  • @user-fr1lw2nu8y
    @user-fr1lw2nu8y16 күн бұрын

    Bobby, how big does the Acer griseum get ? would you put it off corner of a patio, 11 ft away ?

  • @hobbybobby3398
    @hobbybobby339816 күн бұрын

    In 20 years, it'll probably get 15-20ft tall and 10-15ft wide. I think that distance would be okay, but you may want to limb it up, a little, to keep the clearance underneath. To that end, I'd look for one that has a single leader and not one that has dual leaders at a low height. Eventually, it can get a bit taller and wider, but it's not a huge tree. Good luck!

    Such a cool tree! Knowing its history makes my imagination run wild, thinking of how the earth looked millions of years ago. It also makes me wonder how it could have went from inhabiting the entire northern hemisphere to only surviving in a small area of China. Maybe some disease that no longer exists? Like how the American walnut is getting decimated by blight. In any case, I just planted and Amber Glow cultivar and can't wait to see how it turns out. :) I live in the suburbs, so a normal size one was out of the question.

  • @h.n.4060

    That's my guess too, disease or maybe a mold wiped them out. None of the other explanations really make any sense. But if that's correct, then there's a chance that whatever did it might still be around, but is also dormant.

    Hey Bobby! Thanks for making this video! The fagus sylvatica pendula is my absolute favorite tree. I planted one at my old house and one at my parents’ house. I presently have three at my current residence and want to plant more. The challenge is that I cannot find them anywhere and my previous source is now out of business. Are you able to steer me in the direction of a nursery that raises these? I am located in Pennsylvania.

  • @hobbybobby3398

    Wow! The one in this video is from my old house, and it's gotten so much larger in the last few years! I just went to see it, last week, and it's magnificent. This is the tree that got me into trees. How large of a specimen are you looking for?

  • @hobbybobby3398
    @hobbybobby339810 ай бұрын

    It's fairly unusual to find them in retail settings. I know a couple Chester Country, PA wholesale growers who have them, but they're fairly large. The one in the video was 5" - 5.5" caliper when I planted it if I recall correctly. I found that at a NJ retail nursery by accident.

    Bet it was gorgeous when fresh and newly bloomed. Whites are so beautiful. I have to cut mine - they stay in bloom about at least 4-5 months+ , i.e. November/Dec to April/May. By that time, I’m tired of them and the plant desperately needs rest with a couple of spikes pulling their strength. Need to get back to leaves and roots. I keep mine fed well in the summer when they can get bright light, dry out fast and have new tips in the pot and are constantly making new leaves. That way when fall comes and they are getting a few weeks going down as far as 60s at night they can form more spikes. The years the fall is long and temps don’t get down past 57-60@ night after nice warm 75+ days, I get more spikes. As long as they have been out all summer they can take the gradual temp lowering. Its so different though in the spring where they have been inside all winter, can’t take the cold, I won’t put them back out until the temps reach at least 70, and the nights are there too. But the lowering to around the 60 range is how the Netherlands get 3-4 spikes on their production phals. Of course, theirs are inside and under controls. I was going to ask why the leaves were a bit floppy, but I see why, your roots seem very dry. I find in these clear pots, watering before those roots turn silver the plant stays happier in terms of stiff upright leaves, at least in my Orchiata bark. I also find calcium helps along with magnesium spray every two months. For me, the leaves are pretty hard. I’m using RO so need to always add calcium. I use First Rays Klite 12-1-1 as a base that has 10% calcium and all the trace minerals needed. About every couple months, I skip watering, I let them do a hard dry ie to silver for a couple of days and then water heavy until nice green. It will make it start to push roots or does for me. The Klite is a safe base to use more often at 25-50 ppm and I alternate in Better Grow plus and their bloom formula once a week or every other week. It really depends on how the plant is responding. I’m just not sold on MSU formula ie very low phosphorus and potassium. These are vital to root production and cold tolerance if you live where you can keep them outside for a longer period of time in fall/winter. You don’t need to over do, but more than 1% is needed I think. I tried it for 2 years and saw a decline and now they are doing better with the model I’m using. Especially with bare-root Vandas which I have 17 large ones that need at least 1-2 times a day watering. One watering is with 25-50 ppms of the Klite, second is with RO water or rain whatever I have available. In July and August they need many days a third watering when days are over 95 and up. You might be interested in the note I made on other video about leaving old spike about 3” tall to use for clipping and stabilizing plant when repotting etc. just a thought that really helps me out with wobbly phals especially when you need roots. As all know, the movement chafes them off and they can’t get established if wobbling around.

    I find sod staples work well too - I use the cheaper 6” and if needed cut off to the length you need. Works great to keep non rhizome in place just put on each side. And can use with cattleyas too, place a shipping peanut under and push down on either side, no messing with rhizome clips that won’t work on some pots. On phals almost always get 2 spikes, get more with longer cooling. I don’t cut them off short, but leave them about 3” long to clip stakes to. This makes excellent stabilization. If no old spikes , use the lawn sod staples on each side all the way down to bottom of pot. So far has worked for me. Just a FYI.

    Aren’t you worried about that humid keeping your plants wet. About 4 years ago I used one of these types and it kept everything in that level but the leaves and walls got wet even with fans. and next thing I knew a very fast moving bacterial infection popped up and cleared out 3 phals almost overnight. Scared me but I saved the others. But now I’m more a 60% tops when indoors in plastic.

    I planted a dawn redwood tree in our town park in my son’s memory two years ago. It has a pretty crazy shape and I would like to prune it up some, but I’m not sure how. I consider myself a pretty good yard pruner, But this species has me stumped.It looks a lot like a bush, not like the tall stately trees I’ve seen. Can anyone advise me the best way that I could shape it up? I understand that might be minimal for now. The top doesn’t grow up straight, it’s kind of floppy. I appreciate advice and patience, I’m just starting to learn about this tree. I’m very excited to learn that it came from Sichuan province in China, the very place for my son accidentally passed

With one or two exceptions, there is nothing I haven't been able to bloom due to insufficient day night temperature differential, and one of those..if you go see my videos on p schilleriana, you'll get the details, but as soon as I took that out of my warm tent, it bloomed just fine in regular house temperatures. I don't think you will need to worry about getting cooler air in if you need heaters to get to 80 degrees. This is the first video of yours I've seen and I'm guessing you've changed it around. If you'd like to see what has worked very well for me setup-wise which is similar to your situation, for the last..at least 5 years without changes, I've got a grow room tour video. You are exactly the kind of person I made my channel for.

    Hi...thanks for your comment and info on your experiences. I'll check out your stuff. The light is rated as pulling 280-300W, and the tent is 5ft (W) x 5ft (D) x 8ft (H). One of the reasons I had issues without the grow tent is because I keep my house cold...often 62F in the winter, and the area with good light is limited. Brassavola Jimminey Cricket 'Super Bug" is an orchid that I could never bloom in my house but have bloomed in the tent. I have kept a fan to blow air from the basement into the tent at night, but it's partly to circulate fresh air into the space. I now keep the "daytime" temps between 76F and 79F, I think it is. In winter, my basement gets to about 60-62F, but in the summer, it's in the 66-68F range. Thanks, again...be well.

    Hi. Thank you for viewing. I didn't have any cones, either, in my grove after 20 years. I don't know the answer, but have heard that they're only produced in "hot" summer regions. Mine are in USDA Zone 6b.

    Dawns will produce female cones as young as 5 years. What you are looking for, are the male cones, or strobili, that appear as strings of green pearls no younger than 18 years of age.

    @@hobbybobby3398 That is incorrect. 6b is prime real estate for this tree. I have all the answers you can think of. Just throw me a question.

    This is a gorgeous Shishigashira! When you planted it 18 years ago, did it have that spread out branch structure?!? The branch formation of yours is amazing.

    Hi...the tree thanks you for the compliment! It wasn't this large, obviously, but I didn't do much pruning over the years, so its habit developed naturally. I recently planted a new, smaller one that has a nice habit, as well, so I'm hoping it will be a nice specimen in years to come.

    this is very typical growth pattern. I have two in my yard and they basically grow with lots of skinny vertical branches in a reverse conical shape.

    Hi. This was filmed in the spring before fully leafing out, so that may explain what you're seeing. It was fully healthy, not dry, and had the same appearance it always did at that time of year.
