The unique beauty of Acer palmatum 'Shishigashira' (Lion's Head Maple) | Hobby Bobby

Next to Metasequoia glyptostroboides, Shishigashira may be my favorite tree name, but that's not what makes this ornamental tree so great. Here, you will see the great leaves of Acer palmatum 'Shishigashira' in early spring. The unique characteristics in its leaf and branch structure create a true sculptural presence in the garden. Commonly known as Lion's Head Maple, this particular tree is positioned in full sun in climate zone 6b. It has deep green coloring once the leaves mature and vibrant orange/red colors in the fall. A true specimen planting!

Bobby, what would you recommend off corner of patio ? Lions head Japanese maple or paper bark maple ?

Probably the Acer griseum. A. palm 'Shishigashira' tends to be a fairly low branching specimen, and the bark on the griseum is much more interesting. Just my opinion, but that's what I'd do if placing one 10ft, or so, off a patio.

This is a gorgeous Shishigashira! When you planted it 18 years ago, did it have that spread out branch structure?!? The branch formation of yours is amazing.

Hi...the tree thanks you for the compliment! It wasn't this large, obviously, but I didn't do much pruning over the years, so its habit developed naturally. I recently planted a new, smaller one that has a nice habit, as well, so I'm hoping it will be a nice specimen in years to come.

this is very typical growth pattern. I have two in my yard and they basically grow with lots of skinny vertical branches in a reverse conical shape.

Beautiful Shishigashira! Since it's exposed to full sun, can the leaves tolerate the hot summer sun? I'm in zone 8b. Thanks!

Thanks for watching, Emma. This tree is in zone 6b, and has no issues with its southern exposure. I watered regularly for the first year when establishing, but it's been no maintenance since then. According to my Dirr tree bible, zone 8 is the likely limit, but may need supplemental watering in dry periods.

Hi. It is only this color green in the spring with new leaves. As the year goes along, they get much darker, and the leaves get stiff and feel dry. I do not use any fertilizer, but the first two years I watered it when there was no rain. The location in the video has good soil. I planted another one, last year, where the soil is not as good, and it looks the same in spring. Good luck with yours.

Bobby, I have 4 Japanese maples and this one is my fav. It’s nearly 2’ and I have it in a spot that only gets 2 hours of direct sunlight. Since I live in central California the summer scorches in the high 90’s and often times in the low 100’s. Some of the roof foliage on my lions head maple 🍁 have burned but bc I water every morning it has survived. I’m considering putting this on my front door step (it’s in a decorative pot) to get it out the sun. Any suggestions?

Hi, Jerry...sorry for my slow response. I'm no expert, but I suspect that your tree is suffering due to it being fairly young and in a container. Maybe it just doesn't get enough water for the sun/heat exposure because it's in a container. Also, since it's not in the ground, the roots will be warmer. Mine gets 8-10 hours of direct sun, and our temps get into the 90s and, occasionally, over 100, and the tree does fine. I'm zone 6b for reference. I hope that gives you some help... good luck, and thanks, again, for the question.

Hi Bobby, beautiful tree. do you prune it? when? does it heal well? does it flower? how long would you say it has grown in 18 years? has the trunk thickened much? Thanks for sharing.

Hello, Paolo, and thank you for viewing my video. I did prune it back from the house a few times, but it really didn't require much maintenance. It never had any issue with pests following pruning. It is a tree that can be pruned fairly heavily, I believe. In fact, by pruning, you can accentuate its distinctive appearance, but I did not try that. No, it does not have a decorative flower. It was planted April 1, 2001, as a 2 inch caliper tree about 4.5 feet tall. In 2019, it was probably 7-8 feet tall, and the trunk had grown to about 8" caliper. I no longer own the property, or I'd measure it to give your specifics. I hope you find that helpful.
