Here is a quick before and after look at the process I used to clean and disinfect my old clay pots before reusing them. It's simple, and they look like new! Here is the step by step process...I was in no hurry, so I let them stand in various stages for quite a while as you'll see:
1. Wash pots out and scrub with abrasive side of sponge or brush
2. Soaked in 10% bleach solution for a couple hours (used protective gloves)
3. Soak/rinse, change water, repeat to get rid of bleach for several hours.
4. Baked in oven @250 degrees F for 2 hrs...let cool in oven overnight & brushed off salts in morning
5. I STILL had some stubborn salt stains, so I soaked in 50% vinegar solution for 6-8 hours. Used gloves. (This REALLY got rid of rest of salts, so I may start with this step, next time.)
6. Soak/rinse, change water, repeat...final soak was overnight
7. Allow the "like new" pot to dry
Note: You can also use a paste of baking soda and water to scrub stubborn salt stains, but I didn't need to do that.
