Fagus sylvatica 'Pendula' (Weeping European Beech) | Hobby Bobby

This spring 2019 video, shot before my Weeping European Beech leafed out, focuses on the meandering structure of this most unique trees . Truly a tree of amazing winter interest with its twisted and gnarled habit, it's the tree that got me hooked on trees. I searched for the "right" Fagus sylvatica 'Pendula' for over a decade before purchasing this one. This is my favorite tree in the world of trees.

Hi, thanks for watching. This is not 'Purple Fountain.' This is straight 'Pendula which is green and has a wider, less vertical habit. I fell in love with them at The Elms mansion in Newport, Rhode Island where several have grown together over 100+ years and created a massive umbrella to walk under.

Hey Bobby! Thanks for making this video! The fagus sylvatica pendula is my absolute favorite tree. I planted one at my old house and one at my parents’ house. I presently have three at my current residence and want to plant more. The challenge is that I cannot find them anywhere and my previous source is now out of business. Are you able to steer me in the direction of a nursery that raises these? I am located in Pennsylvania.

Wow! The one in this video is from my old house, and it's gotten so much larger in the last few years! I just went to see it, last week, and it's magnificent. This is the tree that got me into trees. How large of a specimen are you looking for?

It's fairly unusual to find them in retail settings. I know a couple Chester Country, PA wholesale growers who have them, but they're fairly large. The one in the video was 5" - 5.5" caliper when I planted it if I recall correctly. I found that at a NJ retail nursery by accident.
