A quick tour of Acer Griseum (Paperbark Maple) | Hobby Bobby

Paperbark maple (Acer griseum) is a wonderful, mid-sized ornamental tree which, in my opinion, is all to infrequently used in today's landscape trade. It exhibits wonderful cinnamon colored peeling (exfoliating) bark which provides year round interest, and takes on wonderful fall colors of reds/oranges. Here are two examples which were 5 - 7 feet tall when planted about 20 years ago. Now, they are probably just under 20 feet tall.

We’re building a house with a small yard and I’m considering this tree. Thanks for the video.

Hi, Mike...thanks for watching. It is a great tree and good for smaller landscapes as it's a fairly slow grower. Do your research and make sure that the size it right for you. Another smaller tree with winter interest is Crepe Myrtle. It flowers and has mottled bark for year round beauty. It's generally multi-branched, so it's a different feel (almost like a large shrub), but if you want a flowering tree with interesting bark, this should be on the research list if it suits your climate zone & the habit appeals to you.

Bobby, how big does the Acer griseum get ? would you put it off corner of a patio, 11 ft away ?

In 20 years, it'll probably get 15-20ft tall and 10-15ft wide. I think that distance would be okay, but you may want to limb it up, a little, to keep the clearance underneath. To that end, I'd look for one that has a single leader and not one that has dual leaders at a low height. Eventually, it can get a bit taller and wider, but it's not a huge tree. Good luck!

Bobby - How far apart are your two trees? This video made me buy one of these trees last year and I'm in the market for a second one.

Hi, that's great! They're probably 20-25 feet apart. I hope you are enjoying yours. I've since moved, and really miss them.

Yes, try a local tree nursery...call around. It will have to be tolerant of your climate zone depending on where you live. They're more expensive for the same sized tree than species grown in more abundance, but their characteristics really make a nice specimen. Good luck!

Hi, Jennifer. I don't have a definite ID on that tree. It's an Acer palmatum of some sort, but not sure if it's any specific cultivar. It's a tree that I brought with me by 60" spade transplant from my prior residence in 1998, so it's been around a while. I kept it pruned pretty well so as to not have it too large for the space.
