Great for adding accent to the yard, especially during winter months.

Specific epithet comes from the Latin "griseus" meaning gray, in reference to the color of the undersides of the leaf.

Pruning is best done as soon as the tree enters dormancy in late fall or early winter.

Propagation is difficult by seed and cuttings but easiest with young stems.

When pruning, which it needs very little of, its best to avoid doing so in the spring when the sap is running. Late fall is the best time for pruning for this maple.

According to Dr. Pulte, some individuals of this tree are thought to produce almost no (if any) viable seed. Germination rates may also be as low as 1 in several hundred individuals.

Difficult to propagate, "the biggest problem is poor seed quality; seeds are often void as is true for the other trifoliate maples; fruits we collected had 1% to 8% viable seeds."

Definitely a zone eight tree. I live in zone 8B and there are paper bark maples all over the place here as Street trees and in all the nurseries.

Cultivated paperbark maple suffers from a lack of genetic diversity. Wild paperbark maples are being used to reintroduce wild type genetics to help save the trees in nurseries

There are no serious insect issues to worry about with this Maple. Also to help remember just think of Paperback Writer from the Beatles but switch Writer with Maple.
