Woodturning: An Ashload of Cherry Blossoms - part 2

From an ash log, I turned a shallow bowl and decorated it with painted cherry blossoms. Part one of this two part series covers the rough turning. Part two picks up after the rough turned bowl has been dried.

    WooHoo! This sequel did NOT disappoint. That would have been a total pain in the ash. Seriously, though, very pretty bowl. Mrs. Rick must be pleased with all the great pieces you make.

    Hi Rick, Beautiful and definitely not a half ashed attempt at Cheery Blossoms. That must have been a huge amount of work but the end result would bless any table anywhere, especially a table in Wales, where we don't get much Cherry Blossom where I live. Great video Rick. Take care. Cheers, Huw

    Hi, Mark. For the background, I used Transol wood dye, which I bought from Amazon. For the branches and blossoms, I used acrylic paint pens (also purchased off Amazon). For future projects with painted pictures on them, I plan to use acrylic paint applied with paint brushes - the paint pens were a little too limited in some way. Thanks for watching!

    I noticed you have a 'traditional' grind on your gouge rather than the Ellsworth or Celtic grind that're so popular now. How come? What are the pros & cons of your grind? What's the bevel angle?

  • @RickTurnsWoodturning

    @RickTurnsWoodturning

    3 жыл бұрын

    That’s a brand new gouge that I just bought from Thompson Tools. It came with a 60 degree grind on it. I reground it to about 50 degrees, but left the grind on the wings as it was, just to try it out. For quite a few years, I’ve had my main bowl gouge ground back to an “extreme” Ellsworth grind - the wings would get a little bit longer every time I sharpened it. So I thought I would use the more traditional shape for a while and see if I like it any better. I was able to do a shear scraping cut quite well with the short wings. The long wings on an Ellsworth grind are primarily for shear scraping, I believe, and most of 5he time when I do shear scraping, I use my dedicated shear scraper (homemade). Here’s a link to making my shear scraper: kzread.info/dash/bejne/lZupy9Gok83decY.html
