Woodturning: Sideways Hollowed Maple

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

From an ambrosia maple log, I turn a medium-sized hollow form. The opening at the top is about 1 3/4" (44mm). The finish is Watco oil-base wiping varnish. During the hollowing, I use four or five different hollowing tools, including a ring tool, a hook tool, a Sorby Hollow Master, and others.

The tools in your shop had a workout this time. No problem justifying the purchases of the unique contraptions. That halo one looks like it came from a brain surgeon! No "Total Boat" finish for this one? The shine was incredible with the wipe on. Definitely a great choice. Another "easy" looking video that I know is not easy. Thanks for educating those of us who have much to learn.

Hi, Cathy. I’ll probably use the Total Boat varnish again, but I haven’t been tremendously impressed so far. It may be my fault - I think I might be putting it on too heavy. This is the best finish I’ve gotten from the Watco wiping varnish. This finish turned out much better than I expected. It was only three coats, sanded between each with 600 grit.

Yours was the very first channel I found when I learnt to use KZread last year during our first UK lockdown. You truly helped me not go mad under the restrictions. I was already restricted due to ill health but to have the final two sources for socialising, my choral society and church, taken away was very hard. Your lovely, quirky somewhat barmy sense of humour has been a balm whilst appreciating your wonderfully imaginative skills on the lathe and recently with paint and burner too. I’m not exactly sure why the piece is slightly off-center when reverse into the chuck. Probably due to some slight play in the jaws. I’ve always noticed that, and that’s why I never finish the exterior immediately after I turn it. The difference is pretty small, but I find it annoying and so turn it again. Beautiful looking bowl Rick! Always like the camera work you do. I like the finish so I think I will get some of the Ack's Polishing Paste that you use over the wipe on poly. I think I would prefer some commentary during the video rather than the silent videos that you now do but a silent Rick Turns video is better than no Rick Turns video at all.😊

  • @RickTurnsWoodturning

    @RickTurnsWoodturning

    3 жыл бұрын

Hi, Tom. The finish was more a result of the Watco wiping varnish than the polishing paste - it looked just as good before I put on the paste. I was hoping the paste would get rid of some of the dust bits that had settled on the bowl as it was drying. Didn’t really do that. Maybe I should have used the Ack’s abrasive paste first. So far, my plan to increase my view count by not talking and doing better videography has been a failure. I’m considering doing voice-over instead of closed captions - I think the captions might be a little distracting.

I have indeed thought about a hollowing rig with a laser guide - but those suckers cost $400 to $500. Maybe someday! Thanks for watching, Ray.

I like the final form very much. I've never turned a piece where the pith deliberately goes through two sides...do you anticipate cracking from the pith?

I turned the sidewalls thin, hoping that would prevent cracking. I think it will be okay, but I wouldn’t have been surprised if it had split early on. Thanks for watching and commenting, Doug.

So it’s wipe on poly and then polishing paste? Do you decide on finishes based on what wood you’re turning?

I’ve been using different finishes, trying to find one I really like. My criteria are fast drying and high gloss. I may have found the right one now. Thanks for watching Lois.

Hi Rick... at the beginning...how many attempts did it take to get the log to roll the right way up ... Haha ... Great looking hollow form... I would not have enjoyed hollowing that one .. so well done you... Entertaining video as always...take care...All the best.....Andy

Hi, Andy. I auditioned six logs for that shot, and it still took multiple attempts for the log to get it right!

What can I do, or make to keep stains and finishes from getting my new lathe dirty?🙂 thanks Rick!

Sorry it’s taken me so long to reply to your question, CJ. I don’t think there’s much you can do to keep the body of your lathe clean. You could try waxing it , I suppose. Probably the bestbthing you could do is to not apply finishes, stains, or dyes while the workpiece is still on the lathe.

Great looking piece. I noticed your depth gauge. Very nice. Did you make it? I'm sure it reduces the number of pieces in the funnel club 🤣

Thank you, Chuck. Yes, I made that depth gauge some years back, but, no, I still cut thru the bottom of bowls with alarming frequency. Here’s a link to my video about making that gauge: kzread.info/dash/bejne/pY6c1Lprp6a2ZKQ.html

Do you think it would be possible to make a decent living with a 12" inch lathe not turning pens? If so how would you go about it it.

Hi, George. I’m flattered to be asked. I am amazed that anyone can make a living as a woodturner. I only know of a few professional woodturners. I used to try to sell my bowls - they were quite nice, but didn’t sell worth a damn, and of those that did, I had to split the sell 50/50 with the craft store. I think it would guide difficult make a living just turning small items. There are a number of videos on KZread about pricing your woodturnings - they might give you insight into it.

I find the many camera angles gimmicky and less than instructive. I would appreciate more verbal description of decisions being made and what and why you are doing what is shown.

I like the different camera angles and the super-up-close shots - that’s what I look for in woodturning videos, and I’m emulating several channels videos that I really admire (such as David Adamsen). But then, that’s just me. I may start doing voice-overs in my videos, instead of closed captions. I think the captions may be distracting. Thanks for the feedback, Gary!
