Woodturning: Hummingbird Down!
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
This ambroisa maple log came from a tree recently taken down in my backyard. It is destined to be a tall vase. I intend to burn in a drawing of vegetation and a hummingbird on one side.

I have a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Funnel Club. I really like the Colwood Cub burner. I looked at a number of woodburners, but the really good ones are in the hundreds of dollars, and the inexpensive ones didn't look too good to me. The Colwood Cub was about $90, if I recall correctly. It heats up very fast, and maintains its heat during extensive burning. Thanks for watching, Joseph.
Rick. This is where I get confused. Every time I look up how to cut wood for the lathe. It says to cut the piff out. But yet I see a lot of turners turn a while log. How do I know which is the best way?
@RickTurnsWoodturning
3 жыл бұрын
You're absolutely right. The pith should be removed - leaving it in makes the work much more likely to split. With my vases, I turn the sides thin and the bottom thin (okay, in this case, a little too thin). The bottom will still have the pith in, but I soak the bottom on the outside and inside of the vase with thin CA glue. Turning it thin makes it a lot less susceptible to splitting, and the CA strengthens the part that isn't real thin and that has the pith. It's worked so far. With bowls (except end-grain bowls), it's not much of a problem, as I either cut away the pith with my chainsaw, or I cut away the pith when the blank is on the lathe. Occasionally, I'll turn an end grain or hollow form, and then I'll turn it thin. Thanks for watching, Mark.
Sorry Rick but what a video! 😳

Vase looks great and you can easily fix it so it will look like intended feature. BTW, how do you prevent sandpaper scratches on spindle turnings? Are they due a too course of sandpaper and/or too much pressure applied, both?
@RickTurnsWoodturning
3 жыл бұрын
There's a couple of things you can do about sandpaper scratches on spindle work. First, start with a finer grit - say 180 or 220 rather than 120. I started with 120 on this piece, because I just couldn't get rid of the tools, even with my skew. Second, between each different grit, sand up and down the length with the sandpaper - that will help a lot. Thanks for watching, Trurerx.

Well worth, I think. It does get plugged up, but it keeps cutting. I like it a lot. I think possibly a hook tool is better. I've never had one, but they look like they cut similarly to the ring tool, and are less likely to get plugged up. I've thought about using an angle grinder to cut away about 90 degrees of the ring to make it a hook tool, and see how that works. Thanks for watching, Bob.

OMGoodness! Cut the damn bottom out of the vase. Well it can be squared off and a bottom can be turned and glued on just don’t tell anyone. Of course to you the piece is ruined forever. Sorry my friend, it happens, and it is a shitty deal.

I cut a plug (about 2.5” dia), cleaned up the hole a bit, and glued the plug in. If anyone asks, I’ll say it’s intentional - it’s a feature, not a bug. Thanks for watching, Robert.
