Woodturning: Hot Air Poplar

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

This bowl started out as a poplar tree near a church facility in Rockville, MD. When it was cut down, I got several logs from it. I'm turning it into a shallow bowl, with a hot air balloon decoration woodburned and colored into the interior.

    The hot air balloons are beautiful along with the turning. Wood turning & hot air balloons have a lot in common. They both never know where they will go & each takes a master to navigate. Thank you for sharing.

    I agree with Sheila. More of the coloring please. If someone isn't interested in that part, they are more than welcome to skip it. Same if they thinks it's too long. Anyway Rick, I love it. It's whimsical. And who doesn't like hot air balloons?! Thanks for sharing your creativity with me again. Stay safe, Vickie PS thanks for more coloring this time compared to last.

  • @RickTurnsWoodturning

    Hi, David. This is the first time I've used the watercolor pencils, and they worked very well. Since they're dry when you apply the color, it's easy to stay inside the lines of woodburning, and there's no danger of dripping on some other part of the work. I've tried wood dye, which is a lot of trouble, as it comes in a powder and has to be mixed, and it only comes in five colors - black, brown, red, yellow, blue. Of course, you can mix other colors from those but it's time-consuming and messy. I've also tried painting on acrylic paint and acrylic paint pens, but the results have been so-so. The acrylic paint is quite opaque, unless you water it down a lot, and it's also prone to dripping where it's not wanted if you're not careful. So the watercolor pencils are the best I've tried so far. But I think I'm going to try alcohol inks next time - it comes in a wide variety of colors, and it might not obscure the wood as much, while still giving a dense color - I hope. Thanks for watching, David.

    Not sure how I missed this one when it was released. Shame on me. Stellar filming as usual. I’m so glad you film everything from the start, as it reinforces all the steps that I have yet to cement into my brain. Cool outcome too. Love all the colors. I may have missed it but didn’t see a link to the colored pencils? Did you just color in the drawing with the pencils, then, wet a small brush and touch it to the area you just colored? How did the color stay inside the lines? Secret, I bet?

  • @RickTurnsWoodturning

    @RickTurnsWoodturning

    3 жыл бұрын

    Thanks for watching, Cathy. I didn't put in a link to the water color pencils - didn't think anyone would be interested. Yes, I just colored in the area inside the woodburned lines, and went over it with a damp brush to "set" the color into the wood. By not using much water on the brush, I avoided the colors bleeding across the woodburned line. That's the main reason I do the woodburning when I'm going to color it - the woodburned lines serve as a stop to the liquid coloring.

    It is a self sharpening chainsaw. I recently had a problem with it, where it didn’t cut well at all, and when it did cut, it would always angle off to the right. Sharpening the chain with the self-sharpening feature of the saw didn’t help in the least, so I decided to replace the chain. I decided to get a regular chain instead of the self-sharpening chain. The chain that was on there didn’t have much wear on it, and I didn’t want the same problem to happen again. Thanks for watching, Joseph.
