Woodturning: Ambrosia Maple in a Vase

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

This 11 1/2" (29.2cm) vase is turned from ambrosia maple, from a tree cut down in my back yard just a month ago. It is turned green, but turned to a 1/4" (6mm) thickness on the sides to minimize the chance of splitting during drying out. The finish is a oil-based wiping varnish.

Thanks for the feedback on the captioning, Ron. I had just updated Adobe Premiere Pro (the software I use to edit my videos) before I made this video. And I used some of the new features they added to captioning support. That turned out to be a HUGE mistake. The captions were supposed to have a background that would make the text visible - that didn't work. The fonts and sizes of the text were supposed to be uniform - that didn't work. The captions are supposed to be turned on and off with the "CC" option on the video viewer - that didn't work. I'm really disappointed in the latest caption support in Premiere Pro. PPro is the buggiest program I have ever used (and I was a software engineer for 45 years - I've seen a lot of buggy programs).

Hi Rick, Nice video. Question, what was the stamper you used to "sign" your project at the end of the video? It was hard to tell for sure but it looked like a rubber stamp that was inked. Where did you get it and does the ink hold up when a finish is applied? I usually slightly concave my foot so the project sits flat...how much taper can be used with this stamper? Please advise. Thanks, Myles

There are a lot of websites that do custom rubber stamps now. Search Google for "customized rubber stamps", and find a site that lets you do designs in the webpage. The stamp doesn't all that good a job when the surface is curved. I usually try to get only a very slight curve on the bottom of my work pieces for that very reason. The ink holds up pretty good when putting varnish over it, as long as you let it dry for an hour or two.

I have 2 questions for you 1 is video related and the other is not. The video related one first. I watched you make the hollowing tool, I've seen you use it a few times now I'm thinking about making about making one. What would you do different I you had the chance to make make another one? The second one I couldn't find an e-mail address to ask this question. I'm an Administrator for a Facebook group and we are having a debate on live edge and natural edge bowls. If a bowl has bark on the edge of the bowl is it considered a live edge or natural edge bowl? And I would also like hear comments from everyone also.

Live edge vs natural edge - in all the videos I've seen (and cataloged in my database), there has not been a consistent use of those two terms. To me, it makes sense that both terms are pretty much the same. On the ring tool - in the video, I mention the problems I had making it. The only serious problem was buying stainless steel for the shaft - turns out stainless steel is a lot harder than mild steel, and I broke three taps trying to tap the screw holes for the set screws. I'd suggest making the shaft only as long as you think you might need - mine first one was ten inches. For tall vases, I made a second one with about a 14 inch handle. I'd also suggest the largest of the termite bits from Oneway. My first one was a 1/2", my second one was the 5/8". Thanks for asking and for watching my videos, Dirty.

@@RickTurnsWoodturning I was thinking about 13" deep. Yes, I was watching that video and was thinking to myself " let's see how many drill bits he breaks and if he does get a hole drilled, let's see how many taps he breaks" Stainless steel is not easy to work with for the average Joe. I've been watching your videos for a good while now because you're the only one that seems to do large turnings consistently and your sense of humor helps out also!!!!!

Sorry, David, I'm giving myself an at-home colonoscopy, so the boroscope isn't available at the moment. But thanks for watching!

I like your work, I am gonna offer a request, or suggestion. When you do place captions on the video, could you consider using lettering that contrasts with the background? I had to replay the part near the front where you used a "peeling cut", 'cause I couldn't understand what you were doing with a peeing cat. Dark blue script on a dark background, hard to read.

Thanks for the feedback on the captioning, . I had just updated Adobe Premiere Pro (the software I use to edit my videos) before I made this video. And I used some of the new features they added to captioning support. That turned out to be a HUGE mistake. The captions were supposed to have a background that would make the text easily visible - that didn't work.

Nice vase. Some of your blue captioning is difficult to read against some of the darker backgrounds.

I enjoyed this video. I appreciate your putting descriptions of each step, but the blue had poor contrast with the background. It was difficult for me to read.

@@RickTurnsWoodturning Rick, I sometimes think, “how cool would it be to do a KZread channel of my own”! Then I remember I’m retired and don’t want to begin the learning process of all the “computer stuff” id have to learn to begin. Then it’s really a lot of work to putout a video on a weekly basis that would be a bit informative, a bit entertaining, something with a bit of originality. Lots of work and that not so fun as making a lager piece of wood smaller!😉 I’ll leave it to you guys that can navigate the software and do editing and such things! Great video, I hope you can fix your captioning for next time.
