Woodturning: A Bowlful of Maple

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

This bowl of ambrosia maple (very little ambrosia, I'm afraid) was made from a maple tree I had taken down from my backyard a couple of months ago. Due to various mistakes on my part, the bowl turned out quite a bit smaller than I had intended. It has a dyed rim on it, with a pattern cut in with a Sorby spiralling tool. This is also the first project where I've used a hook tool and a Longworth chuck.

    Don’t be so hard on yourself. You didn’t give up, you created a beautiful bowl, no one but you and those who watched knew the original design AND you didn’t break anything or get any blood on the wood. I call that a success.

    Thanks Rick for this video. At school I understand a hook tool or a ring tool are designed to hollow when we do an end grain job. Mr Martel (Canadian wood turner) created a hook tool and shared videos on KZread to show how to use it. This is a suggestion only. I just want to keep you in a safe situation because I am enjoying your videos. Sorry for my poor English but my maternal language is the French. Regards.

    Thanks for the information, Yves, and your English is just fine. Everything I've read about a hook tool or ring tool says it is for end grain hollowing, but I want to see if it works in other situations. And it does, with both tools, fairly well.

    Well, it's purty! I guess I didn't see too many mistakes. It's always difficult to know what wet wood is going to do but I guess we do know it will warp. LOL! I doubt if it's the not knowing, more like the forgetting or getting lazy. Whatever, it's a perfectly respectable bowl and it looks great, Rick! 😊 Phil

    Oh, don't be so hard on yourself Rick - a strong solid C is what I'd give it. But the dyed red that ended up with the dark contrast was a beautiful feature; so let's bump it up to a C+. Hmm, forgot about the use of the hook tools - good work for their first time, full project use ? Brings you up to a B. Should take away for the LW chuck but we are envious of it !! And finally with the extra credit *Oopsie* your final grade is B+. Thanks for sharing🙏 Stay safe. -Mike😷

  • @RickTurnsWoodturning

    Right, Christian - that’s what I’ve always heard about hook and ring tools. I wanted to see if that is really true. It’s not, as far as I can tell. The hook tool worked great on the inside and outside of the bowl. It’s a bit aggressive, and will pull itself into the work, it that was easy to get used to and compensate for. On the bottom of the inside of the bowl, it is better than a bowl gouge, I think, although I don’t have a bottom gouge to compare it to. On the outside, I think a gouge is still better. I still learning to use the hook tool, but it’s looking good so far.

    U get some extra points for grabbing the tool in thin air. Even more challenging is to turn on the far side without reversing the spin direction having inverted the tool.

    A few things… first, I believe it turned out great. Second, what kind of sanding device are you using? I’m having issues getting my projects sanded down nicely. Third, what would you say is your biggest mistake on this project? Thanks

  • @RickTurnsWoodturning

    @RickTurnsWoodturning

    2 жыл бұрын

    Hi, Kevin. I use a 3 inch sanding pad on a right-angle power drill, and generally sand from 120 to 600 grit. Works out well - just can’t skip any grits. I’ll sand between 30 and 60 seconds on each grit (120, 240, 320, 400, 600). My biggest mistake on this bowl was right at the end. I was turning the bowl wet. After I had it shaped and mostly sanded, I didn’t get back to it for 3-4 days, and I didn’t wrap it up in plastic. It warped pretty seriously. If it had been finished, that would have been okay. But I still wanted to use the spiraling/texturing tool on the rims, and that did not go well at all. You can see in the video how out of round the bowl was. The texturing was very inconsistent all the way around - it didn’t look very good. Thanks for watching, Kevin.

    Hey Rick, great job on all your projects, but I'm very curious about your bowl gouges. They look they they are concave and I feel that is the reason your getting some of those catches, im no pro myself, and maybe it just looks that way on camera, but sometimes it's the little things we over look, it took me awhile to realize I was putting a concave grind on my gouges till I figured it out. Thanks for all knowledge and the great videos.

  • @RickTurnsWoodturning

    @RickTurnsWoodturning

    3 жыл бұрын

    My gouges (and other turning tools) are sharpened on an 8” grinding wheel, so there is some concavity, but it’s really slight. I guess it could be avoided by using a flat sanding type of sharpening system, or a flat rotating stone system. But to be honest, I think my catches are the result of carelessness! Thanks for the suggestion Leonardo, and thanks for watching.

  • @RickTurnsWoodturning

    @RickTurnsWoodturning

    Every time I’ve seen the hook used, it comes with a warning that it is only end-grain hollowing. I wanted to see how it would do in non-end-grain turning. I also wanted to compare it to the ring tool - it is, after all, a partial ring tool. Thanks for watching, TJ.

    Looks great for what you went thru! You probably know it, but your tool rest was way too far away from your work. As much extension as you had from the actual cutting was your problem. Suggest a curved tool rest that you can cozy up closer to your workpiece.
