Woodturning: Sycamore - from the Big and Tall Shop
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
This large sycamore log is about ten months old or thereabouts. I got it from a homeowner in Rockville, MD. It's about 14 1/2" (36cm) long and 12" (30cm) in diameter. It's showing some cracks near the ends of the log, but I'll be shortening the log and hopefully that will remove the cracks. As I turn, I find more splitting inside and I reinforce those area with thin CA glue. In vain! Before I can hollow it out, the wood comes apart. (I did not cut though the sidewall - honest!)

Rick, I’ve had very mixed luck with sycamore. It seems particularly susceptible to ring shake, where the wood actually fractures inside the tree along annular rings. Results just like you had here. Sometimes you can see it on the end of the log and decide whether and how large, it will be possible to turn something from it. Always entertaining and informative to watch you. Thanks!

Well, Rich, at least it wasn't something you did wrong (funnel). When you were skewing the outside, it's the et cetera that you have to watch for. I'm glad you remembered to turn your face shield around before you started turning (lol). Safety first. Take care. Bill

@@RickTurnsWoodturning Always a pleasure Rick👍
Enjoyed the video Rick, sorry it didn’t work out, that’s the way it is sometimes though. I had a piece I was working on yesterday that cracked apart but I made a mistake of turning the lathe back on without checking my tool rest clearance and I was almost finished with it and all I heard was a bunch of cracks and pops and that was that, threw it off the lathe and broke it totally in half 😵💫😣
@RickTurnsWoodturning

Thanks for watching and commenting, Kimsey. I had a large cedar bowl on the lathe once - it was almost done, and I decided to make one final cut - it exploded! And ruined my day.

@RickTurnsWoodturning

I'm still learning how to use my hook tool. So far, I find it not quite as good as the ring tool, but that assessment may change when I get more proficient with it. Thanks for watching, Apple.
I’m sorry your project fell apart. I’m new to wood turning. I’ve not seen placing the log in the lathe the way you have. I wasn’t sure you could turn a bowl in the end grain. What are the pros and cons. If I may ask.
@RickTurnsWoodturning
2 жыл бұрын
Turning a bowl end-grain isn’t very common, but it can be done. It can give an interesting grain pattern, and will sometimes give you a larger taller bowl than using half the log. On the negative side, you’re turning end-grain while hollowing, which is generally more difficult than regular bowl turning which is side grain. Also, turning end-grain usually leaves a lot more torn grain.
