Woodturning: Japanese (or Ambrosia?) Maple

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

This piece of ambrosia maple is from a tree taken down in my backyard just a few months ago. I'm turning it thin, so I won't have to dry it out. The final 11.5" (29cm) vase gets three coats of sanding sealer (to seal in the coloring) and then three coats of a water-based varnish.

    The wood burning and painting always adds a extra element to your work. Which elevates the project from a simple bowl or vase into a true piece of art.

    Nice piece Rick. Have you tried using the alcohol ink mixed with Shellac to reduce to color spread when applying? I haven't tried that but watching the video brought it to mind. I use Shellac a lot and have started playing around with alcohol dies and stains. If you try it before I do, let us know.

    When I use a spur drive while turning wood, I always use a forstner bit a little larger than the diameter of the spur and bore in about a half inch. This is a safety measure in the event the wood comes loose and tries to fly away. The wood will remain on the lathe because of this safety measure. It has saved my bacon more than once while turning wood. Question: I noticed you had some bleeding of red ink on the wood over the burn lines of a maple leave. How did you achieve keeping the burn line and getting rid of the red ink that went beyond the border of the leaf? Did ya sand, reapply ink and re-burn the Leaf outline?

  • @RickTurnsWoodturning

    @RickTurnsWoodturning

    3 жыл бұрын

    Good idea about the hole for the spur drive, J. The ink bled A LOT when I put it on (with too much ink on the brush - it did a lot better when I blotted the brush after dipping it in the ink). I used a sand eraser to remove most of the bled ink - I didn't get rid of it all, but it did get most of it. A sand eraser is just an eraser that is more abrasive than a rubber eraser - I found out about on the Pyrocrafters channel, and it works great.

    Why is all that noise necessary? I’m laying in bed trying to watch some interesting videos and I click on yours to watch a piece of wood falling and slamming down on some kind of metal surface with all the clangs and echoes so loud my wife woke up and asked what that was! Guess I won’t be watching any more of your videos.
