Log to Bowl, a Legacy 1
Ойын-сауық
From a Silver Maple tree, planted by a dear friend since passed on, cut down with extreme prejudice by the local electric company a few days ago, and claimed by me...
This is the first of a few legacy pieces I'll be making from this special tree. Lasting and hopefully beautiful legacy or heirloom bowls that will be given back to her family over time.
This log measured in at over 28% moisture content, so it was a wet one to turn. But I like green turning, and have great success with them not checking or cracking as long as I turn them thin...and that's just what I do in this video.
This first bowl is a live, or natural edged beauty.
I hope you enjoy, and thanks for watching!

I apologize for not making this clear in my video. My dear friend, whom I considered a sister when I knew her, and is still a true sister in Christ, passed on a couple years ago. I appreciate the condolences, and love you all dearly for them, but I'm OK and her family is too. This tree being cut down by the electric company was a shame, but also a gift... because now I get to make some very special treasures for her loved ones. God Bless and Semper Fidelis!

May this (and other?) Bowls be a special comfort to her family. Indeed John 3:16 is why we have a hope of seeing our Savior, as well as our loved ones we have sent ahead.
LOL. "So I had to make a change." I loved what happened next.

Something about your videos makes me feel happiness, which doesn't come easily to me. I can't place what it is exactly. I guess knowing that wholesome, down to earth people like you exist just makes me feel good. Seeing the transformation of these chunks of wood becoming beautiful things really warms my heart. Nature is so precious and has so much to offer.
Listening to you woodturning calms the fettered nerves. I find turning to be a great time to pray & listen to God. Imagine this: your bowls are God’s answers. Our roll is total obedience. Complete surrender sweetens the world around us. Love God & love all who’s are in our realm of influence.
Irene would have loved the bowl. It was nice to honor her this way! Love the bowl and I’m sure it will always be cherished! 🌹 g
Your thoughtful respect and remembrance speaks not just highly of your friend, but of your own faith, humility, and abiding love as well. The live edge bowl looks great....let dry slowly (paper bags). Best wishes.
Beautiful Bowl, love the live edge, thanks for sharing

My sincere condolences for your loss Rod. It is never easy. I send you tons of love and energy for the upcoming and needed grieving time. That bowl is beautiful and will hold precious treasures and moments of memories with and of your friend. Semper Fi. Please stay safe and take care.
Good morning Rod, We are one week since Resurrection Day. Resurrection Day was, is, and will always be the most important day in history. For believers in JESUS CHRIST, it gives us the blessed assurance of a glorious reunion around the Throne of the LAMB. We mourn but not like the world mourns because of that blessed assurance.
Thanks for the tip of the hat Rod and as per usual you are inspiring. Yep it was 6 in the morning when I got a notification to watch your video. I will have mosquito nightmares tonight.
Another nice piece of turning and my God continue to bless you in your turning,
OMG, it was six in the morning here! ...except I've been up all night... Love it!!

I ready do like the natural edged bowl. I noticed that the shavings were different to the shavings of dry wood. I’m learning so much about wood. It’s great.
Great video Rod, I am sure your friend will be looking down with a huge smile after seeing what you did with the tree 👍👍👍
Great wake up. 😁 Love your dowel method. Makes so much sense. 😁 Thank you for sharing. 😊
Hi Rod it is just awesome I love it when wet wood is turned then you get these long strings of wood flying around.

What amazingly beautiful and treasured gifts these will make Thank you for sharing 😉
Wow.. so thin and delicate. Will be lovely when completely finished.
I learned something from this video. I didn't know that turning the walls extra thin would help minimize cracking. Thanks Rod. I usually learn something from you.

Thank you Dave. It had a lot to do with the evenness of the sides and base, as well as the wood being clear of knots and pith... I did leave the pith in this one but it's so tiny, I had a strong feeling it wouldn't be an issue. I'll show this bowl again, and talk about the results, and go more in depth about my thoughts and experience with green turning.
Beautiful work as always Rod! I really enjoyed the curls coming right at the camera! simple, clean & a just memorial to your sister. Well done Sir!

Rod, beautiful turning!! Can't wait to see it all dried and finished. Sorry for the loss of your friend. The electric company did the same here, too. They cut down some nice cherry, Tom got some of it. Now for him to make something with it.
I would love to see a video on your sharpening process for that 3/4" gouge at 55 degrees.
Amazing job on this one!
Beautiful bowl and love the live edge. Mighty fine turning.

Wow I can't believe you put out this Video. We planted a tree when my Father-in-law Died and a recent storm blew it down. I need to do exactly what you are doing. My bandsaw is to small to use a circle jig so I will have a hard time balancing it out. As always Thanks Tim
Very nice Rod. Love natural edge bowls. A little warping will just add to its character.

this is so beautiful, and the idea of a tree she planted and now must be cut , then turned into beautiful, useful bowls for her loved ones is truly a tribute ever lasting
Nice bowl Rod. You have enough tree left to make a whole set of them. I hope the bowl lives up to your anticipation and does not crack. It will be interesting to see how much it distorts when drying. Thank you for sharing and have a great day.

Thank you, Glen! I have more that was shown too. I plan to do a bit of band saw milling to make some boards and other sized chunks. I'll show this one again in a couple weeks.
It's a beautiful thing that you and those that use the pieces you produce from that tree, continue to enjoy something touched by such a dear friend. Maybe now, you could plant another Silver Maple in her loving memory, also to be enjoyed for years to come, and who knows, maybe decades from now, someone will be turning your legacy into a beautiful bowl. I'm not a Marine, and don't feel I have earned the right to return the greeting "Semper Fi", my brother is a Canadian Naval Officer though and I have the utmost respect for all service people. So, in response to your Semper Fi, I will say Thank You from the bottom of my heart, for your service!

Empathy. I lost count of the times I had trouble twisting the whatchamacallit into a thingamalog. Love turning green, easy on the tools, and I often get a sap showrd to keep me cool, lol.

Thank you Rod for another interesting video. I must confess that I haven't taken much interest in wet turning but just this past week a friend dropped me off a section of freshly cut apple and another left me some holly. Both are very heavy as they are filled with sap so this gives me the opportunity to try wet turning. Semper Fi Alan.

Morning Rod Like That natural Edge on the bowl. I have put bowls in wood chips before and all they get is a moldy Bowl I started using a 20lb bag of rice and it dries perfect without cracking tends to dry the wet out more evenly and slowly. Semper Fi

It's absolutely lovely, silver maple is often not as esteemed because it is softer than sugar maple proper. A friend of mine bought a cheap convection oven with a warming feature. He turns it to 175 and puts his green turnings in there for a while to essentially kiln dry. He used to have a propane camping oven for that purpose, but it was screwy on the controls, and he wound up with "flaming" maple a couple times. By the way, the log looked long and straight enough to send through a joiner/planer and then cut into some boards. ("Alaskan Mill" chainsaw attachments are handy, especially with the skyrocketing prices of lumber.) If you have any other logs from that tree, you could make some really neat small furniture. But then again, you have a keen eye for what the turning blanks may hold, so it all works wonderfully.

Thank you, that's a good idea, I'll look into the convection oven kiln. I do plan to mill some boards out of another length that I have. It's a limb... I had to use the trunk to get nice sized bowls. I need one of those Alaskan Mill rigs too, but I'll do some band saw milling for now.
A chainsaw is music to a turner’s ear, like a moth drawn to a light. Looking forward to the finished project.
