WHAT IS TALK HEATHEN?
Talk Heathen is a weekly call-in television show in Austin, Texas geared toward long-form and on-going dialogue with theists & atheists about religion, theism, & secularism. Talk Heathen is produced by the Atheist Community of Austin.
Talk Heathen is filmed in front of a live studio audience every week at the Freethought Library of the Atheist Community of Austin.
The Atheist Community of Austin is organized as a nonprofit educational corporation to develop & support the atheist community, to provide opportunities for socializing & friendship, to promote secular viewpoints, to encourage positive atheist culture, to defend the first amendment principle of government-religion separation, to oppose discrimination against atheists & to work with other organizations in pursuit of common goals.
We define atheism as the lack of belief in gods. This definition also encompasses what most people call agnosticism.

I was going to say "the caller needs to spend some time in the natural history sections of museums" but hey, people like him either don't visit museums, or scoff at what they would call "misinformation" presented in museums. You beat me to it. Across the world, there are museums full of evidence of transitional species. I'm not into art, it's just not a thing I have interest in or knowledge of - but I don't go disputing Rembrandt because I don't visit art galleries.

The correct response to "where are the transitional fossils" will always be "everywhere; you refuse to acknowledge them and ignore the relevant literature." In order to think they don't exist, a person must intentionally duck, dodge, and dive all the relevant information.

@@jt5678 for most people that actually isn't that hard to dodge, duck and dive evolution, most people who aren't biologists don't really deal with evolution in their life, when the only thing a person hears about evolution is their pastor's weak ass lies about it and they don't seek out the information of course they are gonna be wrong about, I don't know that it is the 3 D's you mentioned, I think like most people they don't think about this stuff cause it's irrelevant to their life, they just believe what their pastor says about it, then they call and are embarrassed (or should be) by their ignorance, it's yet another example of how religion f's a persons brain up

He gets so frustrated when they won't just let him read his sermon script unchallenged. "Biblical evidence" isn't a thing. The Bible is the claim, my guy. If he had evidence to prove his god exists, he wouldn't need to start by "disproving" Islam.

That's why they use arguments from incredulity though. They either can't, or don't *want* to understand. They want to be blind. No amount of evidence or education will convince them, because they choose to put blinders on. You can't reason with someone who refuses to see reason. Religions manipulate people's emotions in order to control them.

If I was a fiction writer, I could write a novel that ended with unresolved issues and even predictions, and that would be a kind of a cliff-hanger. Then suppose I wrote a sequel novel in which all those predictions I made up somehow get resolved. That’s exactly how I view the Old and New Testaments of the Bible. One man-made book with “prophesies” and a follow-up man-made book with resolutions of those prophesies. Two man-made books of pure fiction.

7:59 This is (at least) the second time on this show that I've heard a theist say evidence is an epistemic tool, but that's very much missing the point. The tool is not the evidence itself, but rather it's how you evaluate the evidence. If you're simply pointing to the evidence, that there isn't any conscious evidence evaluation happening, which is a huge part of the problem. If you care about what's true, you need to ask yourself what that evidence actually means and what conclusion it points to (i.e. evaluate it with some epistemic tool), not just automatically see it as evidence supporting your presupposed or desired conclusion.

Dunning-Kruger shower thoughts and arrogance run amok. Dave needs to 1) Bounce his ideas off someone else (which he seemed he was trying to do but...) and 2) Be able to listen to someone other than his inner "genius". I think Dave spends a lot of time alone.

The Muslims, unlike xians or Jews, can actually point to the historicity of Mohamed, who was an actual historical figure. His very first point falls completely flat.

Before determining which god is the true god, maybe provide evidence that a god exists, or is even necessary.

It never makes sense... they call an atheist show with statements about science/biology etc. I'd ask, "why not go ask actual scientists?" but I think we all know why.

For all the whining theists do about prophecies, I haven't heard them bring up a single thing that can actually serve as a prophecy. But worse... even if they had thousands of actual prophecies that actually came true, that doesn't even hint at a god. It would just show someone was able to predict future events, not how they did it, not that it was supernatural, and certainly that the hypothetical supernatural means was a god.

Literally not even a minute into the call and this is incredibly stupid. Should we just let out every person convicted of murder because the dead body didn't come with instructions saying who committed the murder?

"Hey guys we got all these bones" "Pfft show me the instruction manual, then we'll talk." This is beyond stupid. I think he might ACTUALLY think having like documentation is the only indicator of whether something is genuine. Given that he believes the Bible ONLY on documentation, his position might actually be that stupid. And he might think the world is 6-10 thousand years old so maybe he thinks humans have always written things. I mean the sheer amount of layers of stupidity on display here is astonishing.

well what he's actually trying to do is pretend "see? I agree with you, I care about evidence, I'll dismiss things if the evidence is bad, I'll even grant that the testimony in the bible is no good, do you believe I'm just as reasonable as you now?... ok, prophecies though" It's absurdly transparent from the start this is a bad faith script. I don't know how they keep convincing themselves this crap could ever work.
