Exactly. He is confused about statistics. The odds that ANY grain of sand is picked is 100% by virtue of the fact that he picked one. The impossibility is based on predicting WHICH grain of sand was chosen out of the whole beach is where his confusion lies.

Imagine police detectives using the "can't find the body...therefore something with god" argument all the time.

Obviously, the best explanation for a missing body is that it came back to life and walked away.

Since the invention of flying machines, he had to move to avoid discovery. He now lives outside of time and space where he can never be found.

Austin Wow, even the dumbest person can point to man as the designer and creator of cards, with no deity required. Infinite regression in creators is going to give you a huge problem when it comes to the universe.

This caller has just demonstrated that he doesn't understand evolution, statistics, cosmology, or epistemology. To paraphrase Dave Chappelle paraphrasing Charlie Murphy quoting Rick James, "Religious indoctrination is a hell of a drug!".

In the episode, I think it was a clip of James waxing introspectively when he said that, which was referenced by Murphy and then repeated (I think) by Chappelle in full Rick James costume and makeup. To be honest, it's been so long since I first saw it, and I've re-remembered it so many times in my mind, I can't separate the impersonation from the original quote by James. But it really seemed to fit the caller's "Manchurian Candidate" level of religious brainwashing.

I know right. I mean, apart from the strong religious delusion he sounds like a fairly reasonable guy. To keep his fantasy alive he has to reject all those things plus nature and natural origins, the definition of evidence, observed facts and science. How a person can be fairly reasonable and still maintain those beliefs is baffling. He did sound like a newcomer to atheism so maybe he's come to his senses but I doubt it.

Dude saw a KZread video on statistics between bong hits and was AMAZED.

This is most classic case of the argument of personal incredulity I've ever seen

I even worked out that if I hadn't been born as me, a different combination of genes, etc., would simply result in a different person, who would STILL be ME. This call started so well, with the caller taking the time to calmly define terms and preventing strawmanning. Hats off to Austin for doing that... And then it just devolved in 'probability therefore God,' and evidence-less assertions. If Jesus really did rise from the dead we need to take him more seriously than anyone else to have ever lived. Sure. First demonstrate that Jesus really did rise from the dead; until you've proven that, there is no point to moving on to any other part of the argument.

They don't understand each other. The man on the phone says that it's a miracle that HE was born with such chances of billions of cells and billions of years. He thinks that for HIM to be born there was supposed to be a plan because the chances are that small. But that is kinds the same as the puddle argument. If it wasn't him, it would be someone else in his place thinking HE was supposed to be born. The thing is you can rationalize it because you were born. It doesn't mean there was plan for you to be born.

You cellphone analogy is entirely different from the analogy used in the video. There is one simple thing you must realise in order to disprove the argument. The original argument was along the lines of this: “In the set of all possible human beings which could exist today, the fact that exactly this particular subset exists, the people who are alive right now, is extremely unlikely.” Now that is true. Just like the point-wise probability of any continuous distribution is zero. However, it doesn’t make it a miracle when you pull a random number from the distribution, even though it could have also potentially been any other number. All you must realise is, that no matter which subset of humans had been drawn from the set of all possible human beings, you would have been looking back over the generations and said: “it is so extremely unlikely that the exact subset would be alive today...” and that is what makes your argument entirely invalid. In your cellphone analogy you have restricted your probability space, by only allowing for “complete texts”, which is equivalent to making a prediction. It is also equivalent to saying you which to pull a number from a uniform distribution along the entire real axis, between 0 and 10. Suddenly, there is a prediction, which changes every thing.

I couldn't care less about someone called Jesus if they don't have superpowers. I knew plenty of people called jeuss and none of them walk on water. If one of them wrote a book saying they walked on water and we found it decades later, I'd look for evidence he walked on water such as other contemporary accountings of it then derive an understanding from there. We have none of that for the supernatural claims of the bible. The only places you can find where Jews and christians ever had superpowers is in the bible. "handle snakes" - "cure disease" - etc. No supernatural powers from the bible can be demonstrated to be real :D

The odds of this specific state of people? Sure, nearly 0 odds. When I shuffle a deck of cards. A specific order of the deck is quite rare. But I'm still going to have an order regardless, so 100% chance of some deck order to the cards. Similarly, this specific order of people, near 0 odds, but some order of people at or near 100% chance. Looking at the outcome and stating how amazing it turned out this way is true, but it had to turn out some way, thus not amazing something turned out.

About odds, i am Taxidriver, at the end of the shift i have a amount of money made, how it is in the end us a matter of chances! It depends on, who will need a taxi, what is not known before, some will take a taxi anyway, the time they will is not premade! Then it depens on wheni start, where i start and what collegues did up to that point. And even then its not written down how the shift will end. I can guess how much i will make but thats based on how much i made in the past, i have no chance to say, i will make x euros, but it could be. Most times i have luck and sometimes i dont! I will make money, i just dont know how much, i dont know where i will be at x hours but i hope. Sometimes i had it, that i say i need x to be fine with it and it happened, but i cant count on it, its chance!

I believe they "know" God is outside of space and time because otherwise it's harder to claim God created the universe. It's not an argument from knowledge, it's an assertion that's needed to support the creation story. If God is not outside of space and time, how could God create space and time? I wonder how many unsupported assertions are needed to support a typical creation story.

For that reason I bear in mind that Christians saying they don't believe the Universe could come from nothing are simply trusting their intuition or common sense, over scientists that they are biased to distrust. I'm just getting started reading the Lawrence Krauss book, A Universe from nothing. Hopefully it will help me reform my "common sense" to include more complex knowledge :) BTW, Before time is kinda contradictory, so no shame in not believing in it ;P I believe the Einstein model actually has multiple extra dimensions within our Universe, but that's not something everyone likes about it and there are efforts to resolve that. I have heard that there are serious theories that involve other Universes outside of our space and time continuum, so I don't dismiss the possibility out of hand. I do have to wonder why some Christians say God is or was outside of time since the bible says nothing about a beginning to time or a creation of time. (As far as I know.) Perhaps in the justification of their creation story they get some mashup of bible and science. The outside of time and space statement seems to be drawn directly from the big bang theory, so they are at least acknowledging a part of the theory. I think the apologist tradition basically starts from their interpretation of the bible as absolute truth and looks for science that doesn't disagree, and then throws out any parts the bible disagrees with. You know, basically the opposite of modern scientific method? But yeah, much of this science is rather young, and changing and improving at an amazing rate, so perhaps within our lives there will be some realistic theories about things outside of time and space.

And yes, a critical thinker would reject a story with the only evidence to support that story was the story itself. Circular reasoning. “A is true because B is true; B is true because A is true." Faith may be defined as belief unsupported by evidence. To justify his religious faith, that world-champion question begger, Saint Paul, offers the following rationale: “Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.” - Hebrews 11:1 In other words, the argument boils down to this: There are things we cannot see (God, Heaven, whatever). There is no evidence these things exist. We believe in them anyway. Our faith (unsupported belief) is itself the evidence of these “things not seen.” Therefore these things exist, because we believe they do.

toag I love how he says the chances are one in, say, several billion. Guess how many galaxies their are? A several billion. We know of one galaxy that has a planet with life out of the several billions that are confirmed to exist. Therefore, he refuted his own point.

Was he just going through the book "Apologetics For Dummies"? The conversation is done if they assert outside of space and time yet can't even explain it. Everything in the bible is predicated on the god character being outside of space and time and able to influence and interact with our universe. Then there are a barrage of questions to answer before you can even get to this god creating anything. Kill the tree by cutting the root. Don't bother trying to kill it by slowly plucking the leaves. That's my opinion.

Throw a dart and then draw the target afterwards. Wow, how did that dart end up in that exact place!
