WHAT IS TALK HEATHEN?
Talk Heathen is a weekly call-in television show in Austin, Texas geared toward long-form and on-going dialogue with theists & atheists about religion, theism, & secularism. Talk Heathen is produced by the Atheist Community of Austin.
Talk Heathen is filmed in front of a live studio audience every week at the Freethought Library of the Atheist Community of Austin.
The Atheist Community of Austin is organized as a nonprofit educational corporation to develop & support the atheist community, to provide opportunities for socializing & friendship, to promote secular viewpoints, to encourage positive atheist culture, to defend the first amendment principle of government-religion separation, to oppose discrimination against atheists & to work with other organizations in pursuit of common goals.
We define atheism as the lack of belief in gods. This definition also encompasses what most people call agnosticism.

Two topics that stood out to me. The little rant he went about the 7th day (referring to saturday being the holy day). Days were tracked differently in the past. If you were to go back in time and start counting the days using whatever system they used you would not be on par with the current calendar we use, also the US changed to the Gregorian calendar (1752) and skipped ahead 11 days to be on par with it so the 7th day he keeps sacred most likely isn't the day god separated. Secondly the caller says that curing cancer is nothing for god... then why doesn't he do it. He already meddled with humans before in the bible by 'wiping' the entire population (babies included) except for noah and his family, why can't he meddle for good things like removing cancer from those kids.

@@JoshuaWillis89 Oh, well of course. I wasn't disagreeing, but making an additional point. Some philosophers feel the bible has some literary value, and, for them that may be true. I personally think it, like all other 'holy books' is dangerous and vile. All the abrahamic religious texts, and the Hindu ones, there are probably a few others I'm unaware of, should, in my opinion, only be studied by trusted scholars. They all have the potential of causing the harm they always have. They can be believed and create radical extremists. How to temper this with my belief in freedom, my dislike of censorship, I don't know. I guess if they are taught as ancient fables, though not to very young children? It's kind of like a lot of the children's stories we know today, were pretty horrific in their original versions. A lot of them were teaching fables, especially to teach morals that we no longer consider moral! Like the 'Little Mermaid', the real version is awful! Little red Riding Hood, too. Both were meant to keep 'peasants', and girls, especially, in their place. Holy texts are like that. The Hindu ones teach that just as racist and divisive. The holier you are, the lighter (skin color!) and more beautiful you are. And all the abrahamic texts are as anti woman as it gets! Women are evil, corrupted, well, man is too, but women even moreso, and disposable property. And everything is fixed through blood magic, sacrifices. It is sickening, bigoted and violent. The gods are the most so. 💝☮️🎃

I always love it when people like this point to the prophesies in Daniel as evidence despite the fact that just about every different denomination of Christians have a different interpretation of that same prophesy. Also, the fact that Babylon was the the first kingdom mentioned and Babylon was an actual kingdom doesn't lend any credence to the prophesy. It also said that Babylon was a huge kingdom that ruled over all man and beasts in the world - except Babylon wasn't that big of a kingdom. It also said that two others would rule after Babylon that would be inferior to Babylon....nope, that didn't happen either. The Persian Empire was in no way inferior to the kingdom of Babylon and the Greek Empire did not rule over all the earth. Okay, I guess you could make a case that the Roman Empire was the kingdom made of Iron but even that doesn't fit because it didn't "break into pieces and bruise". It broke into pieces and dissolved and was destroyed. The feet and toes of clay....well, I've heard dozens of different interpretations of that kingdom. The problem is that this prophesy ignores countless other MAJOR Empires that have existed and that controlled far more people and land than many of these other kingdoms COMBINED - like the Chinese Empires, the Russian Empire, the Ottoman Empire, the Mayans of Central and South America. I mean I guess it is accurate if you ignore all the other major kingdoms. I don't find prophesies in which you have to ignore significant amounts of human history for them to be accurate to be particularly compelling.

Most scholars believe the book of Daniel was written around 167-164 BCE during the reign of Antiochus. That makes it very easy to talk prophesy when most of the prophesies have already happened before the book has been written. (Edited. I originally wrote the wrong date. ) I'll bet the Watchtower won't do this. lol They just call it new light.

That wouldn't work. They would just point to references of God in ancient writings that predate the Bible. Ancient references to Yahweh and/or God in the near east are plentiful.

Just look around you. There's pestilence, plagues, natural disasters, disease, monumental suffering on an epic scale. Surely some God is responsible for all this misery. Do you think it just happened by chance?

That can be proved. Outside of the Bible. There's loads of proof of Jesus, Hid suffering death and resurrection and 40 days with witnesses after. He did claim to be God. I'm just not at my laptop with all the references right now. But you could probably look it up.
