WHAT IS TALK HEATHEN?
Talk Heathen is a weekly call-in television show in Austin, Texas geared toward long-form and on-going dialogue with theists & atheists about religion, theism, & secularism. Talk Heathen is produced by the Atheist Community of Austin.
Talk Heathen is filmed in front of a live studio audience every week at the Freethought Library of the Atheist Community of Austin.
The Atheist Community of Austin is organized as a nonprofit educational corporation to develop & support the atheist community, to provide opportunities for socializing & friendship, to promote secular viewpoints, to encourage positive atheist culture, to defend the first amendment principle of government-religion separation, to oppose discrimination against atheists & to work with other organizations in pursuit of common goals.
We define atheism as the lack of belief in gods. This definition also encompasses what most people call agnosticism.

Ps: Sorry Don. I'm convinced that you're an epic force in favour of reason and skepticism, but you're not very vocal as a host/ co-host and have rarely shot down the high-flying theist callers. The caller said he was convinced because they died rather than deny the resurrection. No where in the Bible , or in History, was there a Martyr where someone was told to deny the resurrection or die. That Martyr does not exist. There was never a Christian in the Bible or elsewhere when the Christian was arrested, taken to court and told that their faith was wrong and they had to deny it or be executed. That's something that is uttered by Christian often. They probably don't read the bible or do research. There is something else. When I was a kid I was shown these movies that had illustrations of the end times, and people being executed for belief in the Christian God. The idea is implanted of THAT TYPE of martyr is placed inside their head, and they aren't as well versed in Scripture like people ( like me ) who had to look and study because of doubts and desire for the truth regardless of the consequences. The idea of doing research that could potentially change their faith keeps them snug in the ideas. It keeps them for looking for extra information that would fluster their tender sensibilities with faith. Now they can turn a very cutting and critical analysis towards other religions. God yes! No problem. They can call them liars, crazy, delusional, but never point that sword of reason toward their own faith. When pressed on this particular act of bias toward other faiths excluding their own, I would ask what rescues their ideas from that particular criticism.

Romans 1:20 was the mountain I could not get over and was the driver for me out of Christianity. We can now see aspects of "creation" down to the quantum level and god is not "evident" anywhere. When I listen to discussions like this, where it would have been so simple for some simple empirical evidence to be left for seekers to find, I consider that no proof ,for the Christian god, specifically ,can exist. We know a lot more about the daily life of various Egyptians, Mesopotamian kings and Chinese royalty from direct writings from their period and later than about a so-called deity. The brick wall of faith cannot, it seems, be breached by reason nor fact.

At the Catholic school that I have to clean at for work, they have a martyr story about a 14yo boy named Jose (whom the school is named after) who begged to join a rebellion, saying, "Do not let me lose the opportunity to gain Heaven so easily and so soon". He was captured and ordered to give up his faith, and when he refused, they sliced off the bottoms of his feet and forced him to walk barefoot all the way the cemetery where they were going to bury him. They stabbed him repeatedly, all the while he repeatedly praised Jesus and the Mary of Guadalupe, until they eventually shot him twice in the head. Now whether this boy's story is true, partially true but exaggerated, or completely false is irrelevant to whether or not the boy believed in something/someone that's actually real. In any case, these students are being fed a rather toxic mindset; praising a CHILD essentially eager to get himself killed over a belief with no evident reality to it! I think these martyr stories are just being used as leverage to dig their heels further in their religion, because they don't want to realize they were scammed to the grave, which is a huge double-standard when they see the same thing applied elsewhere.

Joanathan from Arizona sounds quite reasonable, and as one of the hosts says, his response regarding 'Joe-Bob' from Pakistan is at least logically consistent, but he is still gullible biased and is unable to see this. I am not an expert in Biblical or ancient Middle-Eastern history but I do have a good grasp of history generally and I understand what constitutes good historical evidence and what does not, or should be regarded with great suspicion (often because there have been multiple, proven attempts to fabricate evidence and present a false narrative by people who wish to promote a particular story or cult based on supposed events in the past). The Christian narrative is consistently misrepresented by its advocates, with gross exaggerations and downright lies to try and portray the events surrounding the supposed life of Joshua ben Joseph as having absolute and verified historical veracity when this is virtually the opposite of the truth. Nbody know whether there was suich a person as Jesus Christ/Joshua ben Joseph. The most that can be said for the character is that his existence (as some kind of itinerant rabbi wandering around Judea who attracted a small following and made friends and enemies in the early 1st century is that this tory is plausible. There were probably a lot of wandering preachers and some of them no doubt claimed to be the messiah who had come to fulfil prophecies in the Hebrew scriptures... it is entirelt possible that one of them was called Joshua (Jesus in Latin) and even that he fell foul of powerful peole who had him killed. But the fact that the bare bones of the story are possible and plausible says nothing about whether they actually happened, and the numerous later attempts to exaggerate the story anr to add claims which are palpably fal;se (such as the claim that this figure was famous throughout Judea and Syria, which appears in the gospels) just re-inforces the fact that it is all speculation. I personally suspect that there was no such person, but there could have been... and that is all that any historian who is being honest can say. The only truth that is verifiably true about this story is that nobody really knows.

What does martyrdom or sacrifice really mean when the individual being sacrificed is either supposed to be a God himself or the son of a God? I mean, how does a God or his son really get sacrificed, or what does martyrdom or sacrifice really mean when the God in question could just have the power to overcome the sacrifice or reanimate himself or his son. Not to say that any of this really happened, but let’s except for a moment that it did, such a sacrifice means nothing and really isn’t a sacrifice at all. So, this supposed God didn’t give anything for our sins or for whatever. The whole premise of Jesus in this context means nothing. It’s just another story that demonstrates the humanness of these Biblical stories rather than the godliness of them.

The heroization of purposefull victimhood/martydom only works for the holder/apologists for a particular religion or idealism; under these claims heroic self sacrifice can be sanctified by Nazi supporters, the militant Japanese in World War two,The Viet Cong or suicide bombers in Islamic countries, as all of these factions had individuals who acted courageously/selflessly for a popular cause and an honest perusal of x-tian history factually presents it as religion that used violence and genocide to establish itself worldwide.

First time I have seen Eric snapped. Love, love atheist experience BUT this segment was badly managed. Thirty minutes have gone by and still nothing made sense to the caller. You guys should've stopped it before making him more confused than he was before, moved on to the next caller, and that's that. I sometimes feel Jaimie tries way too hard to be patient to the callers more than they deserve and end up making them more confused and stray off from the main topic.

Not sure why Jamie seems to get most of the criticism on these videos. Jamie has a great personality that I think represents atheism and the spread of information about atheism well. He seems like a guy you could actually hang out with. Eric, while a good debater at times comes off soooo fuckin fake. Like that guy friend your girl has who is nice to your face but does that "woooow karen, you're better than that, he shouldn't talk to you that way. Look at me...you're my best friend....I care about you." shit. And he seems to want to get over-the-top upset at callers sometimes just to be dramatic and emulate Matt's style. If Jamie can't get through to someone he does exactly what everyone should do, just kind of sighs it off and throws in the towel knowing he's wasting his time but stays pleasant. Eric gets angry, starts insulting the caller, shouts over them, and eventually hangs up after giving a long self righteous rant.

Jonathan’s skepticism seems to go up to 11 when people aren’t talking about his mythology - and that was 35 solid minutes defending “die for a lie.” J’s a nice guy but his apologetics are as tired and tedious as Young Earth creationist. The obtuseness, cognitive dissonance and desperation to believe are palpable.
