WHAT IS TALK HEATHEN?
Talk Heathen is a weekly call-in television show in Austin, Texas geared toward long-form and on-going dialogue with theists & atheists about religion, theism, & secularism. Talk Heathen is produced by the Atheist Community of Austin.
Talk Heathen is filmed in front of a live studio audience every week at the Freethought Library of the Atheist Community of Austin.
The Atheist Community of Austin is organized as a nonprofit educational corporation to develop & support the atheist community, to provide opportunities for socializing & friendship, to promote secular viewpoints, to encourage positive atheist culture, to defend the first amendment principle of government-religion separation, to oppose discrimination against atheists & to work with other organizations in pursuit of common goals.
We define atheism as the lack of belief in gods. This definition also encompasses what most people call agnosticism.

The best advice I have for you, is to begin the hard work on self-improvement, to find and connect into a community of *some* variety, whether expressly atheist or not; and to be patient with yourself. You undoubtedly have some type of Religious Trauma (look up RTS, it's a thing!), and whenever you're able to go to therapy (I'm still working on that one myself tbh) be sure to look for an empirically-based, reason-based therapist. It's just the meme amongst theists to tell this same lie, because a huge part of the racket is selling the cure to depression. When people do convert, it is almost exclusively for mundane, utilitarian purposes that becoming a part of a specific community can serve. It gives you credibility with a big group, it can get you jobs, promotions, all sorts of financial and other aid, it can be a hurdle for romantic relationships, etc. Theists are either raised theists and fail to break free, or they convert for the bennies. "I was depressed and God saved me" is just the way to rationalize and doesn't happen in real life.

I asked the teacher who very loudly told me that I must never question the word of god again. I started reading all the religions I could find and found all of them to be bovine defecation. Ignorance and emotional pleading are the only reasons that bs is still so popular ? They have people so fearful of not seeing loved ones again, hell, and "committing sin." They can't let it go ?

It would take a really bad designer to design a universe that can easily be destroyed if anything changes the slightest bit within it. Any designer who put people on an Earth that has hurricanes, tornadoes, volcanoes, tsunamis, etc. was a horrible designer. Any designer who made very few places where a human can survive is a poor designer if its goal was to create humans. Any designer who made our bodies able to get easily injured, subject to illnesses, and made us so our breathing tube is next to our eating tube was an incompetent designer.

He's actually made a pretty common transition from traditional repressive doctrine to initial 'rebellion' and emotional PTSD to the relative relief of non denominational spirituality. Hopefully he keeps asking questions till he realizes the 'christian' thing is problematic no matter what it looks like or claims to be. Been there, did all that and more.

Also, this is the second time I've seen you refer to the puddle analogy as being in the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, and it's not. It's something Adams used in talks but was only published in The Salmon of Doubt, which is an anothology of previously unpublished material of his that was put out after his death. I know this is archive stuff, so I hope you stopped doing this at some point.

You don't believe something 'cause it fits you, or because it's pleasant, helpful or expedient. You believe something because it's objectively true, whether you like it or not. "Goddidit" doesn't EXPLAIN the order in the universe either. Physics explains it better, even though there's still a lot it doesn't understand. Meaning of the universe? It has a meaning? Back in the day, one of the messages from American Atheists seemed to be that religion, in general, is the root of all evil. I followed them closely and I've been a member off and on but their approach seemed so confrontational it made me nervous. This was largely due to Madalyn Murray O'Hair whom I must say I have greatly admired but her personality seemed complex, uncompromising and demanding. No disrespect intended. The family was friendly when I met them, especially Robin. They are missed! I have wondered from the start if your organization is an spinoff from AA. Were you part of AA and had a difference of opinion? I do like your approach better.

Is it cool that we are the only known life in the universe. well first off I think it would be arrogant as fuk to think that there's not some life somewhere else, although we have no current evidence of it so the time to believe that is when we have sufficient evidence. But for the size of the universe and the amount of galaxies and such that we have, I think it's fair to say that there's very likely a lot of Life out there somewhere but we may never know about it and if we do we probably won't know anytime soon. But I will withhold belief that there is in fact life until there's evidence. But even if we are the only life, that is amazing but that doesn't point to a Creator to me. Because that means out of billions of galaxies and planets this is the only place where we have life and someone who is creating life, is a moron if this is the only place they put us.
