WHAT IS TALK HEATHEN?
Talk Heathen is a weekly call-in television show in Austin, Texas geared toward long-form and on-going dialogue with theists & atheists about religion, theism, & secularism. Talk Heathen is produced by the Atheist Community of Austin.
Talk Heathen is filmed in front of a live studio audience every week at the Freethought Library of the Atheist Community of Austin.
The Atheist Community of Austin is organized as a nonprofit educational corporation to develop & support the atheist community, to provide opportunities for socializing & friendship, to promote secular viewpoints, to encourage positive atheist culture, to defend the first amendment principle of government-religion separation, to oppose discrimination against atheists & to work with other organizations in pursuit of common goals.
We define atheism as the lack of belief in gods. This definition also encompasses what most people call agnosticism.

Scientists are not they are human, and as such are prey to all the weaknesses of the rest of us mere mortals. Scientists can, have and will lie and manipulate data ect. There are many, many examples of this. Science as a process can uncover and correct these mistakes and corruptions. But only if the scientists using the scientific methodology are honest. It's the very reason for the peer review process.

@@Leith_Crowther Not entirely, since we haven't established a common reference for what "bias" means. If by "bias" the caller means to say that atheists are HOMINIDS, for example, and the caller is also a HOMINID, there wouldn't be much ground for contention, apart from being a poor choice of terminology. But, from context, we might reasonably suspect that the caller is trying to establish that atheists are WRONG and the caller is RIGHT, by virtue of this property called "bias." Then we'd want to see whether the claim of bias is in fact warranted. And in order to do that, we'd need to establish what "bias" means to the caller, and whether we agree with it.

my guess is to try and level the playing field. which stems from the ingroup vs. outgroup mentality. in my experience when i was religious, having beliefs criticized felt like an attack on the self. since religion's so closely intertwined with all your actions. get beliefs scrutinized? the feeling sucks. → go on to project beliefs that these criticizers are the enemy, absolute sinners, worst of worst human beings. believe they're "blind", arrogant. → accuse them of arrogance, which can take the form of claiming atheism is also a religion, takes faith, etc.

@@sammur1977 Your *other* mistake is conflating atheism with science. Atheism is the response to a *single* claim - you claim a god exists, and we say "we don't know/we're not convinced due to the lack of evidence". Everything you decide to lump on top of that are different claims that have their *own* responses. For instance, another claim is "biological "codes" require cognition". That is a *separate* claim that would have to be demonstrated - and this claim can't be used to defend your claim of "God exists" until we all agree that biological "codes" require cognition. And even *if* we agreed that they did, that still doesn't mean that *your* god in particular was responsible or exists. While we could agree that "biological "codes" require cognition", there could be many many answers for who coded it - it would still be up to *you* to demonstrate that it was *your* god, and your god *alone*, that coded it.

The amount of equivocation that goes on in these kinds of calls is astounding. The distinction between the types of ideologies that theists vs non-theists hold is a pretty simple one: For theists, it's a full-packaged worldview that makes proclamations about what the world is and how it should be. For non-theists, the god belief is a small part of the worldview. The rest of our individual worldviews are informed by exploring the world around us and therefore can be drastically different from one another. And it's not just on this particular topic. I also see the same thing happen politically, where the finger is pointed despite there not being any true parallels. And I can only assume this kind of thinking comes from a lack of proper exploration into the other side. Theists tend to have information dictated to them, hence why they assume that it's the same with science, the kind of open questioning and need for specifics/nuance/clarity are all foreign to them. Not to say there isn't room for questions in churches, but at the end of the day, everyone shows up and leaves with the same conclusion in mind (that god exists and he wants the things they were taught). With science and skepticism, there is always room to question everything, it's just that how seriously you're taken depends on your ability to properly communicate your ideas in an honest way. That kind of humility can be uncommon even in some atheist circles.

Well, let's be careful here. The SCIENTIFIC METHOD is open to revision as we gain insight into the reliability of different methodologies. For example, Karl Popper introduced the idea of falsifiablity into the investigation of hypotheses. That was less than a century ago. But you're talking about the PHENOMENA which this method proposes to study. That's an entirely different thing. It's important not to confuse them. Your choice of language needlessly confuses them. Scientific CONCLUSIONS are "always subject to change, based on facts." You offered a perfectly good description, but of the wrong thing. New facts could easily upset a prevailing scientific theory. But the METHOD would remain unaffected, exactly as it was. If anything, our view of the method would be validated. It takes a new insight or interpretation, a change of perspective, something conceptual, to motivate a change of method such as Popper raised. This is not about new facts at all. It's purely conceptual.

Because and of the most inhumane science was done by religious people, because they felt justified in abusing animals or people they saw as less than. So what's to blame? The science they were pursuing or the religion they used to justify their disregard for others Have they're been cruel non-religious scientists? Of course. But the original comparison was how parents treat their own kids. Many religions directly lead to abusing kids. There's no scientific teaching that can be used to justify abusing your child. There are no scientific organizations that protect systemic child abuse. The other side is that conversation is which has done the most good. Science has given us medicine, technology, a better understanding of the world around us, including the ability to do away with harmful superstitions like animal and human sacrifices meant to appease gods people believed control the weather. Now we know that's just natural occurrences, no gods or spirits to appease, and we have the technology to help cope with natural disasters, ask thanks to science.

Atheism makes no assertions or claims and has nothing to prove or defend. “Atheist belief” is an oxymoron. More: “Atheist Faith,” “Atheist church,” “Atheist religion,” etc.

Sadly I think I'm gonna have to unsub from talk heathen.. It was a great channel a few years back. I always preferred it's style a little more than the athiest experience but the content has dried up. it was bad enough to be getting recommended the same videos I've already seen 20 times. but now you're releasing "Throwbacks" which are only from a couple years ago? What a joke. either get some new hosts and make new content or shut the channel down. Stop living in the past

Repent. Believe in Jesus Christ for salvation and become a new person in this life. Luke 13:3 KJV I tell you, Nay: but, except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish. Romans 10:9 KJV That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. 2 Corinthians 5:17 KJV Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.

This caller didn’t, but lots of people do because callers are majority-American. The American south in particular makes “hey, y’all” a pretty normal greeting, especially when talking to multiple people.
