WHAT IS TALK HEATHEN?
Talk Heathen is a weekly call-in television show in Austin, Texas geared toward long-form and on-going dialogue with theists & atheists about religion, theism, & secularism. Talk Heathen is produced by the Atheist Community of Austin.
Talk Heathen is filmed in front of a live studio audience every week at the Freethought Library of the Atheist Community of Austin.
The Atheist Community of Austin is organized as a nonprofit educational corporation to develop & support the atheist community, to provide opportunities for socializing & friendship, to promote secular viewpoints, to encourage positive atheist culture, to defend the first amendment principle of government-religion separation, to oppose discrimination against atheists & to work with other organizations in pursuit of common goals.
We define atheism as the lack of belief in gods. This definition also encompasses what most people call agnosticism.

I can confirm everything Renee said. I spent much of my professional life in a scientific field, fluid dynamics specifically, flow testing shapes to see how the shapes effected the airflow through them. Before I started any flow test I prayed to Satan to guide the air molecules properly and he never let me down. Every time I switched the vacuum motor on the air started flowing as Satan directed it to. Ok it failed a couple of times when we had a power cut but you can hardly blame Satan for the power company's shortcomings. There was also that time the vacuum motor started smoking and burnt out. I prayed to Satan to fix the vacuum motor but I guess he was busy that day or maybe just not a trained electrical repair tech. However as soon as I bought a new vacuum Satan was back on the job. OK I did forget the prayer a few times and the vacuum still worked but I guess I was a steady customer by then so Satan had my back. The only thing that worries me is one day I prayed to the Flying Spaghetti monster and another day to the chocolate teapot that we all know is orbiting Mars and my flow tests still worked fine but maybe those two had a kind of reciprocal agreement with Satan to look after each others customers. You scratch my back and I'll scratch yours kind of thing. What's that you say little Johnny? Could Renee just be batshit crazy? Hmmm, I never thought of that. I'll pray on it.

I wish they could've pushed back on the common rhetoric of how people were nicer back when Christianity was more common place... The reality is people and society were generally only nicer to the in-group. Religion, class, and race. And they love to talk about how women were treated more respectfully, but it was all superficial. Women had far fewer rights, couldn't divorce an abusive or loveless husband without convincing a judge to give permission. They couldn't even seek legal protections if their husband forcefully raped them because a husband couldn't be charged with rape against his wife until the 1990's! And women who spoke out against their husbands or did get divorced, were commonly ousted from their churches. And still often are within certain denominations. So yeah, society was so much nicer...as long as you were a straight, white Christian who perfectly capitulated to cultural demands. And even so many people who did, were suppressing their own emotions and desires out of fear, which led to rampant generational trauma. So yeah, I'd argue the world wasn't actually better, just dressed up to look good.

It’s no coincidence that, in the deeply dysfunctional US, with one of the westernised world’s poorest quality general education systems, belief in gods is widespread. In the Nordics, countries with the the world’s highest standards of general education, belief in gods is limited to a very small minority and has little if any influence on our lives, leading to low levels of criminality and a high level of tolerance and social cohesion. Hatred, bigotry and division are uncommon here.

As a spiritual atheist pagan. I use the term as similar to love. its a concept created by our brain. As im into etymology I have looked at the roots of the word and it seems to come from meaning "animated or having a zest for life" or aka life itself. Again only as symbolic meaning. Love has no material but we feel love due to our chemicals and human mind. Spiritual for me is the same. Its an emotional feeling.

Nietzsche is only ever presented as a nihilist in textbooks. He very explicitly wasn't. He believed the world is inherently nihilistic and modern society doesn't put up an adequate bulwark to that nihilism but he was an arch existentialist

I feel bad for this woman. She said she was coming back to religion from falling away. I remember that cycle cause I went through it myself. It was terrible switching back and forth out of fear hell and the mental clarity of what was logical. It was exhausting. It seems like she wants to be good and decent, but idk if she can because she's got so many thoughts and doesn't seem like she's thinking them all through fully.
