This is my second TH5 Hemp hat. I love it and wear it every day cutting lawn and fishing in the florida summer heat. The first hat lasted 11 years and finally gave up. Tilley replaced it for free with a LTM 5 Airflow which I like too as its a touch lighter and cooler. The hemp hat wasnt available at the time, so I opted for the LTM 5 airflo. Now they are offering the TH5 Hemp at a heavily discounted price and I just ordered one. This hat is my overall favorite and I highly recomend it.

I agree, it’s a fantastic hat and I keep it in my car at all times for my hikes. I also have the LTM5 and enjoy that one a lot too - esp in the summer. Cheers!

I have had my Tilley hemp hat for 22 years. Exposed to sun, rain and snow and it's still a fantastic hat. Right now it protects my head from 38°C sunshine.

Of my collection of a half-dozen Tilley hats, the hemp has become my favorite. I've had it for about five years, as best I can remember. It's the only hat which, while walking down a trail, I've had people come up to me and ask me about the hat. A few have said, "I love that hat! What is it?" The summer breeze can be felt coming through, and it keeps my head cool in the sun. I haven't found it to shed a moderate rain, though; the fabric is too open to keep it off for long, even with a breathable fabric treatment. My first experience in a heavy thunderstorm left my head soaked; it is not a Tilley rain hat. But for short rain showers, it is good. I will add to your excellent review that the hat is not a rigid structure - after a year, it's floppy in the hand, but once on your head, it regains its original shape, completely. You can smash it, pack it, whack a bug and it will immediately have its original shape when you put it on. You are right in that this is a tough hat. Hemp is stronger than most other fabrics. My hat has faded a bit over the years, but it adds to the character of it. I agree 100% with your recommendation of this hat.

First of all, thank you for your comments. I really appreciate it and I think you have added some very good points - especially good to know about your experience in heavy rain.

Unless you need the hat to float getting rid of the foam makes it cooler in the sun/hot weather. Empirically tested.

I have this exact hat - I bought it from the original Tilley store in Toronto in 2005 after graduating high school. Have been wearing it out on the water (boating, paddleboarding, canoe, windsurfing, hiking, cutting the lawn, golfing etc) every summer since in all kinds of weather. Swim with it all the time. Will repel water for a bit but eventually holds some if you soak it...which I like because it doubles as a cool thing to wear on your head on a hot day. I've swam under water with it many many times as well lol...stays on and holds its shape when back on surface. It will dry in about 30 45 minutes. It really is a great hat. I get compliments on it all the time and I see more and more guys my age and younger wearing them. These things may have an 'older man' stigma attached to them...but try it out and you may fall in love with it. It's my go to hat for late morning - 5 pm type sun as it gives full protection during that time of day. Has faded a bit but not much and that just adds character. Brass grommets haven't rusted or changed colour. Draw strings still fully adjustable (though, I've only used them a few times). I have never sprayed it with any protectant or repellent. I stuff this hat in a backpack often and it will get creased and bent out of shape. But all I have to do is wear it for a bit or lay it out on a table and it will fully reclaim its shape. Dunking it in water and laying it on the table to dry seems to really hit the reset button. The brim has a really nice soft yet firm characteristic to it that has stayed the same no matter what I put the hat through. Front end will bend up a bit when boating at higher speeds. It truly is a great hat. It's got a great style to it and like I said, I get asked about it all the time. And it floats!! - have had to retrieve it from the lake a few times. As you may have guessed, I really do love this hat! So well made and I have a million miles on mine with zero complaints or issues.

Best part of a tilley hat is it doesn't feel like your wearing at hat

Thanks Chris. Really great informational review. I have 6-7 Tilley hats and I love them all!! I saw this review several months ago so I decided to purchase the Natural Hemp color, TH5 model. It being such a light color I wash it quite often and I have noticed the more I wash it the better it looks. The quality of the hat is truly amazing. I wish America could claim this quality product. I salute my brothers and sisters up in Canada at Tilley who have set the bar really high and work hard everyday to maintain the quality. I would like to see more reviews on Tilley. Call them and have them send you more hats to review! I will be waiting my friend.

Nice review Chris. I'm currently looking to purchase a new hat here in the UK but disappointed to find no local stockist, although I can order online. As you suggest, trying one on first is the best option.

Thanks for the reply and suggestion John. Coincidently I went to Go Outdoors this morning and purchased my first Tilley hat! I purchased a Tec wool winter hat. Not my first choice given we're moving into better weather however, 15% off over Easter!! Decided will also purchase a T5 airflow but Go Outdoors unfortunately don't stock the olive green that I'm after. Good to try a few hats on though and get a good feel for their range.

I went for the Hemp TH5. I like the look of the wool one and may take a closer look at one come Christmas time.

I don't think it will be too hot. I live in the East Bay just north of San Jose. It can get pretty hot here and many of the hiking trails have little shade. But still find it to be very comfortable. I think you will find it an excellent choice for Central California.

Hi Chris ... Does the Hemp hat run larger or smaller than your T3. I have several tilleys and I agree they all run differently .

Michael Derry sorry for the very late reply. I actually got the same size in both but the Hemp fit a bit more snugly than the T3.

What size is yours? I'm a 7 1/2 in nylon, and 7 5/8 in cotton. What would that be in a hemp hat?

Hi ... how is the sizing? Do these come up firm or generous? Laurie

  • @wayofthehike

I found the hemp hat a bit more firm. But bear in mind that Tilley has very specific sizing and so you should definitely measure your head based on the instructions on their website. Also I find the sizing is a bit different based on each of their hat models, so 7 1/2 size in the hemp hat may fit a little differently compared to a 7 1/2 in one of their other hats.

Hmmm ... ok I normally take a 7 1/4 - 7 3/8 so I'm thinking the 7 3/8. I do have a hat block if it's a little firm. Think 7 1/2 will be too big. How does this compare with your sizing my friend?
