    Hi ... how is the sizing? Do these come up firm or generous? Laurie

  • @wayofthehike
    @wayofthehike3 ай бұрын

    I found the hemp hat a bit more firm. But bear in mind that Tilley has very specific sizing and so you should definitely measure your head based on the instructions on their website. Also I find the sizing is a bit different based on each of their hat models, so 7 1/2 size in the hemp hat may fit a little differently compared to a 7 1/2 in one of their other hats.

  • @soldierloz
    @soldierloz3 ай бұрын

    Hmmm ... ok I normally take a 7 1/4 - 7 3/8 so I'm thinking the 7 3/8. I do have a hat block if it's a little firm. Think 7 1/2 will be too big. How does this compare with your sizing my friend?

    How does the rigid bottom of the Vesica impact the squeezing of water while filtering? It would seem to get in the way of getting all the water out, no?

  • @wayofthehike
    @wayofthehike3 ай бұрын

    Thanks for your comment. The squeezability of it is a huge help in the water filtration process. I don’t find that the rigid bottom has any negative impact on getting all the water out. To me it performs much better than a standard plastic water bottle in that regard.

    I notice that you use one stake for staking down each corner of the tent. I know that the lengths of the guy lines for each corner of the tent floor, body and fly are somewhat different lengths. The body and fly can be adjusted, but not the foot print. How do you keep the foot print tight with using one stake for each corner?

    I have this exact hat - I bought it from the original Tilley store in Toronto in 2005 after graduating high school. Have been wearing it out on the water (boating, paddleboarding, canoe, windsurfing, hiking, cutting the lawn, golfing etc) every summer since in all kinds of weather. Swim with it all the time. Will repel water for a bit but eventually holds some if you soak it...which I like because it doubles as a cool thing to wear on your head on a hot day. I've swam under water with it many many times as well lol...stays on and holds its shape when back on surface. It will dry in about 30 45 minutes. It really is a great hat. I get compliments on it all the time and I see more and more guys my age and younger wearing them. These things may have an 'older man' stigma attached to them...but try it out and you may fall in love with it. It's my go to hat for late morning - 5 pm type sun as it gives full protection during that time of day. Has faded a bit but not much and that just adds character. Brass grommets haven't rusted or changed colour. Draw strings still fully adjustable (though, I've only used them a few times). I have never sprayed it with any protectant or repellent. I stuff this hat in a backpack often and it will get creased and bent out of shape. But all I have to do is wear it for a bit or lay it out on a table and it will fully reclaim its shape. Dunking it in water and laying it on the table to dry seems to really hit the reset button. The brim has a really nice soft yet firm characteristic to it that has stayed the same no matter what I put the hat through. Front end will bend up a bit when boating at higher speeds. It truly is a great hat. It's got a great style to it and like I said, I get asked about it all the time. And it floats!! - have had to retrieve it from the lake a few times. As you may have guessed, I really do love this hat! So well made and I have a million miles on mine with zero complaints or issues.

    Nice to have a hiker reviewing a day pack. While VERY new to hiking, I thought that I knew that there were hiking pole holders. Another KZread reviewer had NO clue what they were for. Rather than admit it, she came up with some far-fetched reason for the existence of the holders.

    This is my second TH5 Hemp hat. I love it and wear it every day cutting lawn and fishing in the florida summer heat. The first hat lasted 11 years and finally gave up. Tilley replaced it for free with a LTM 5 Airflow which I like too as its a touch lighter and cooler. The hemp hat wasnt available at the time, so I opted for the LTM 5 airflo. Now they are offering the TH5 Hemp at a heavily discounted price and I just ordered one. This hat is my overall favorite and I highly recomend it.

    I know this is a two year old video, but I am going to comment anyway. Here are some thoughts... First, let me applaud you for being involved in Scouting, and mentoring young men to be confidently self-reliant. My own Scouting experience shaped me in ways that are with me still, and have made me a better man. Second, in my opinion a small kit like this is intended to fit in a pocket, and should be carried there, rather than in your pack. The purpose is to provide you with some basic abilities if you should become separated from your main gear. What if you lose your pack in a fall off a cliff, or it gets swept away in a flash flood, or burns up in a car fire? At least your pocket kit is with you. Next, the first thing I see when you open the lid is...a lot of empty space! You know the old story about a glass half-full, or half-empty? I'm an engineer, so I see all that empty space and think, "either the box is bigger than it needs to be, or we can fit more gear in it". While "free" is always a good price point, and any blade is better than no blade, that knife is quite bulky for just a single blade. Some of the small Leatherman multi tools and Victorinox Swiis army knives offer more functionality in the same or less space. My pocket kit holds a Victorinox Farmer-X, with a large blade, saw, awl, scissor, and bottle- and can openers, etc. The lighter is always a good backup, but they can leak fuel and be defunct when needed most. Try looping a zip tie around it, under the lever, to keep it from being depressed during transport. I suggest two fail-safe methods that are impervious to water damage, cold or other environmental forces: a Fresnel lens and a ferrocerium rod. You have plenty of room for both. Another addition could be some man-made tinder, as simple as cotton balls soaked in petroleum jelly and sealed inside a straw, or some TinderQuik plugs or WetFire cubes. When orienteering with a map, a base plate compass is a required tool. For the purpose of a small unit in a pocket kit like this, the base plate is a waste of space, especially since if you have to resort to using it, you likely will have lost your map and main compass already. That's a nice whistle! I often wonder, though, whether there might be certain situations where I might not have the wherewithal or stamina to blow it loudly enough to be heard very far. You could add a small signal mirror, too. UST's Micro Star Flash is in my kit. If it moves and it shouldn't, duct tape. If it should move and it doesn't, WD-40. With both you can repair the whole universe! I would suggest using the inside of that straw to hold a sewing needle and thread, and perhaps a couple of small zip ties, or maybe a couple of finish nails and some folded brass wire, turning the whole assemblage into a "mini repair kit". For my use that is way too much flashlight for a pocket tin. I use a KeySmart Nano Torch, really small and really bright. The Photon Freedom is another great small form factor. It's always hard to fit any appreciable amount of cordage in a kit like this. For my larger rigs, I still stand by 550 paracord, and have also started to mess around with Survivor cord by Titan, that has added components of fishing line, snare wire and waxed hemp cord inside it. I have started using Dyneema cord in my small kits. It is immensely strong and has a diameter of <2mm, so I can get a good 10 or 12 feet in a fairly small hank. I also like the idea of a lanyard, and choose gear that can be strung on one. When it comes to first aid items, it certainly doesn't hurt to include some rudimentary first aid items. However, I always carry a separate "mini med" kit that has some hospital grade wound dressings, some Neosporin -impregnated Bandaids, some basic pain, diarrhea, and allergy meds, burn gel, CPR face shield, etc. It allows me to carry a few more crucial items, and frees up space in the tin. I would suggest keeping the gauze and moleskin in a small plastic bag; over time in a kit they will most definitely collect dirt and grime. Here are some other items that would work in a good pocket kit: Water bag (Whirlpak, breast milk bags, etc.) Water purification tablets Brass #3 safety pins (4) Note paper (Rite In The Rain) Fisher Space Pen cartridge or Micro pencil (Viking Mikro) Sheet of heavy duty aluminum foil Storm matches large paper clips (MacGyver tool!) Fish hooks, crimp sinkers, fishing line Snare wire I'm sure your kit serves your needs, and my intention is only to suggest other ideas. If even one sentence of what I've written helps you or anyone else who reads it, I'm happy. Have fun out there!

    I have a female version called Maya. I love all the pockets because I hike with my dog so 1/3rd extra dog gear. I wish the inside zipper pocket was larger though. Overall I like everything about it and could mod the pack but then it would void warranty from REI because I got it month ago. It wouldn’t matter but I am having issues with pack causing rubbing rash/bruising between my shoulder blade and spine from the top the hemmed fabric with Velcro backing for torso height adjustment. If I adjust it to where the hip belt sits right, so my hips take some weigh load off, the hem hits wrong spot on my back. If I lift it higher, the hip belt looses it’s purpose. I went through multiple backpacks and had high hopes for this one because frame is flexible and side pockets are deep. I checked against my Osprey Tempest and hem is much bulkier then Osprey. Have you had any issues with this? I can’t figure out if it’s just me or something with this pack because it is only on one side. I wish they would make two sizes XS/S and M/L because in larger size the hem would end higher up.

    Finally got to try mine out after buying it a month ago. Love most of the features, but don't like the adjustable shoulder straps. At the middle setting, when I lift the pack by the straps, it does not have a secure feeling- feels like the straps might come loose from the velcro. Also, I wish the pack designers would build these with the hip pockets more forward.

    How easy is it to fill from a standing water source like a lake without blowing into it? One concern that I have with bags like the Evernew is that they form a vacuum and don't fill easily if completely submerged.

  • @wayofthehike

    Hey Tom, should be pretty easy. You don’t need to blow into it. You can pull the bottle apart manually and then submerge and drag the bottle through the water a bit.

    I had a Tilley T3 cotton duck hat. Wore it for over a year. It went with me all over the world. Loved it. Posted many reviews and Instagram pics and reviews. However, my hat was “lost”, stolen from my car, and Tilley refused to honor their replacement warranty. They would not even discount my purchase of a replacement. Very disappointing. i had my name and contact info in my hat, but 5 years later now, no one has come forward or returned my hat. I wanted to get another Tilley T3 hat, but because of the way they blew me off with no warranty offer, I replaced it with a Shelta Hat, more features and 20% cheaper. Still, I wish I had my Tilley hat, but apparently their warranty is worthless, at least in my experience.

    Thanks for the review. The idea of blowing in to the bottle is not a good idea if you have already used it as a dirty water bottle. At least not by putting your mouth directly on lid. I have purchased one for that use and will need to come up with an alternative method of getting air in the bottle. I would guess flowing water would not present problems, but still water might.
