I've had my T3 for 13 years. I don't wear hats everyday. Maybe one or two days a month sometimes a little more if it's raining or if it's real sunny. It does however stay in my car year round so I have speedy access to it anytime. The only problem that I ever had with it, is when I bought it, I bought it like the gentleman said in this video. I bought it to fit snug. I didn't listen when I was told it was supposed to fit loose. Mine never stretched out like I thought it would. If I work for long periods of time it bothers me a little. Take heed to those words of wisdom. It is supposed to fit a little loose.

Really good info. I've had my LTM6 for 5 years and am considering buying another Tilley. The TMH55 sounds like a good choice. Using a Ballcap Buddy Cap Washer (plastic frame), I've been washing my LTM6 in the dishwasher with good results. While the Ballcap Buddy is designed for washing ballcaps, it will accommodate a full-brimmed hat like the LTM6. I use a small amount of dishwasher detergent and run it on the delicate - not hot - cycle.

Good video. I’ve had the LTM5 for about a year and looking at getting another. I’ve never been a hat guy till I bought this hat and I love it. Wear it all the time. Blocks the sun from my eyes keeps my head neck and glasses dry in the rain which I pair with a gore Tex jacket and I’m set for a day in the rain. The fit of the hat is what’s so incredible. It just fits my head perfectly.

Thanks, Jim. I've had the T3 for at least 10 years, probably more, and I bought the LTM5 this year, looking for more ventilation while backpacking. The T3 is now relegated to kayaking. I was a little disappointed that the LTM5 didn't provide as much ventilation as I expected, but it is still a great hat. After reading the comments by you and Mark Young, I'll definitely look into some of Tilley's other models.

I thinking that that the nylon on the LTM5 isn't the best for hiking as I'll propose that something that absorbs moisture like cotton, hemp might just be more suitable. Just a theory at this point ;) The mash-up is hard to find at the pop-up displays around town, I actually got mine at the museum in Parrsboro which ironically was the most varied I've seen. Too many stores stock the same model.

I used your video to help choose my first Tilley and help me get the right size. Thanks for your help!

I have several Tilleys and I am awaiting delivery of my TH4 hemp hat. The tip you gave on drying a Tilley by placing it on a Pringles can is the best tip I've ever gotten on how to dry a Tilley without getting wrinkles on the side of the hat. It was one of those ideas that is so simple I wonder why I didn't think of it. Thank you!

I called Tilley and they told me that my TH4 hat would arrive today, it did! FYI They are discontinuing the TH4 and I was told by Tilley that I was lucky to get this one! So, if anyone you know wants one they had better hurry. BTW, I love this hat!

I bought mine (T5) from a charity shop in Cornwall, UK, two years ago. It, the hat, was practically unused and was priced at £1.50 (GBP) (about $2.10 USD). It was displayed on a polystyrene/foam mannequin wig stand. My hat size is 7 & 3/8", the size of the hat was 7 & 1/4" (7 & 2/8"). Bother 1/8" too small. Did I buy it? You bet I did! In the secret pocket were the 'Tilley cards' and the original owner's name & address. (I contacted the owner, in case they had lost the hat, but they had moved from the address in the hat.) Thanks for the cord, cleaning and dyeing tips. (Yes, it does fit - I am able, just, to slide two fingers between the hat and my forehead. The hat's easy to stretch if necessary.)

Great video, thanks mate. Just about to order a Wanderer. Off to Peru, Chile and Easter Island for a month next April, and figured I'd need something a bit better than my baseball caps.

Great video. Love the tip about hanging it over a pringles can etc to dry. Keep that in mind if I pick one up. I have been thinking about buying a Tilley and leaving in my golf bag for rainy weather. Does the hat bounce back into shape fairly quickly when perhaps it has been rolled up or crushed inside a golf bag for instance?

Found this looking for non-stock photos of the TMH55 before buying. I noticed that you mentioned to another commenter that you thought it may be better for hiking than the nylon airflo models. I had wondered about that since the cotton and hemp might wick some moisture vs the nylon. Thanks for the comparison video, even years later.

I've got a t-5 and an LTM6. Love them both!

I do recommend as well if your in the upper end of a size to go one size up. I wear the largest size Tilley makes and when I wash it, it's snug but it stretches out. I am looking at the LTM2 for maximum sun protection. I use mine (LTM6) daily at work and I need to wash mine once a week. It just gets too nasty with sweat in the SW US. Might be less in the cooler weather but I've only had mine since mid summer.

Hey Jim, great video! I've got the medium brim Tilley hemp, the TH5. Absolutely love it! I don't know how big of a problem it is for some people, but it is one of the models with a little more flimsy brim. I personally like it, the stiff brim doesn't shape enough for my liking. Thanks for talking about caring for the hat! They say to wash it frequently, so i do about once a month. Looks like yours have held up pretty well with 3-4 times a year, though in not sure i want to try that with the hemp.

The video I have been waiting for. Thank you. I have a bit of an embarrassing Tilley collection. I started with an original T3 (all white) but ended up exchanging that for the newer T3 (green under-brim) after it started to wear through on the brim. I added an original T5 (two grommet vents). I then added the original black wool Tilley winter hat. Then added a Tilley newsboy cap and a Tilley Ivy cap (both are wool). In recent years (10 years ago) I added the TH5 hemp.. my best summer hat. It has faded considerably but it has the best airflow of all my Tilleys, Most recently I added the waxed cotton TCO6... I think I am finished... well maybe not... the mash-up does look good

I wouldn't call it embarrassing, more like comprehensive 4 season collection :) I haven't tried the ivy caps yet. I'm debating on the winter hat, but I do love my wool toques for the few months that I don't wear a Tilley. Treat yourself and get that mash-up !

The Ivy caps are nice and I wear them often but neither compare to the classic winter Tilley. I love my wool touques and trapper hat for winter as well... the Tilleys are just a bit more dressy...

Superb video - thank you so much, loved listening to you. I've just bought myself a Tilley hat today and made immediate use of it (it started snowing soon after I left the store with my car parked a mile walk away !). I purchased the Outback Waxed one the TWC7 and it feels very comfortable on my head (and I have the same hairstyle as you !). Very stylish I say, and I can see I'll be starting a collection - next up, a Tilley T3 :) Thank you for the video and sharing your knowledge :)

Thanks for all the info. I have a t3 I got used for a few bucks. It now has 3.5k backpacking miles. I've loved it but it's starting to shred and now I'm researching how to replace it. I hope my Tilley experience going forwards is as good.

I’m a 7 1/2 for fitted fedora or baseball hats... but I use a 7 3/4 for all my Tilley hats:)

Thnx for the great info, super useful. Since I have the same hair style as you, I was looking for a good hat but never found one. Would it be useful to wax the hat for waterproofing or do you think this is not necessarry ?

My very first Tilley (LTM5, Natural color) arrived today! Looks great, and was nicely priced on clearance (US $50).

I did try it but I've found the stretching works when the hat is sized right to begin with (e.g. after a wash).It was easier to gift it to my wife and justify buying a new one ;)

The back strap works better for short haircuts. The front strap works for long hair styles, because the back strap will slide right off long hair.

I just bought a 7 1/4 I measured at 22.5 inches but now I'm wondering if I should have went lager like some are saying. I just don't understand why I would want it that much larger. The next size up is 23 1/8

I own a Tilley Hat, model LTM6, and use it outside in Florida for work. I've had the hat 6 years and have no complaints. I've owned other hats and have ripped them while going through brush/trees. Before I purchased a Tilley hat I was typically buying a new hat every year, so paying for one Tilley hat is worth the money. I clean mine in the sink when it gets sweaty/dirty and then hang it up to dry so the shape stays the same. It's a great hat and worth the money!

TFlorida , are you saying that you hang your hat on a clothesline with a clothespin and it still keeps it shape ..When we wash ours we were thinking about using the washing machine on the gentle cycle ...Being brand new my hat feels a little snug but the one size up was way to loose

We have a large yard & my husband also does yardwork for his mom. Which one would you recommend for him who basically needs it for sun protection. He's mainly outside driving to & fro (which he probably won't wear a hat in the car, stubborn) & working in the yard a couple times a week. Not a big outdoor activity person. Thanks.

You can't go wrong with the T3 cotton duck hat, but a model with airflo mesh would also be a good 2nd choice.

I loved my Tilley hat. The brim did stain. I should have washed it more frequently. Wore it snug and it rotted the brim....no warranty.

Also for those that find the T3 too warm remove the foam, it makes a significant difference in my experience.

I have a T3 and an LTM6, both in size 7 1/4. They fit totally different! While I like them both and am able to wear both the T3 fits the way the website says it should. The LTM6 fits quite snug, so perhaps some sizing discrepancies from Tilley?

Yeah I got a 60cm for the t3 and it fit, but 60cm doesn't fit for the wanderer. It's too small

You do know that Tilley sold out to corporate greed, don't you? How about buying a Christmas present for the jobless Canadians whose lives were destroyed?

Warning: SIZE UP. For example, I'm 59-60cm, & it says 7⅜ on the Tilley sizing guide in their website. I had to go to 7¾, which 2 sizes up, & no the hat doesn't blow away in wind even without the cord, but it's a nice comfortable fit. Tilley hats are super durable, stylish, & a conversation starter; they seem pricey but are value for money over time. I've had my T3 for over 16 years at the time of writing this comment & the woollen winter hat for around 10 years, both still look great.

They have been out of 6 7/8th of them all for months and months and months. I prefer the "shoe string" style of chin plus back-strap wind system better than the (neon coloured) elastic cord used on the Paddler than on the TWS1... but they have _that one_ in my size... Cheers, from Toronto

Some styles I like such as the winter and mash up version I had. I find the older style....well old. But if you are in the woods or on the water nobody is going to notice 😄

A bit disappointed with my T3, after 3 years it developed a stain that looks just like a sweat stain where the brim meets the head. On close inspection this looks like the thread that secures the head band has leeched black dye to the outside beige of the hat. I contacted Tilly and after sending photos said they will warranty this, but want photos of the destroyed hat plus $20 +tax first. This might sound silly but it irks me to destroy an otherwise good hat, and it also irks me to pay $20 to replace a hat due to Tilly's fault on what was a quite expensive hat :-(

Does anyone know of a hat brand that offers a Spring/Summer Montana Fedora?

Just got myself a T3. I'm fairly light skinned(Translucent) so baseball cap needed an upgrade. Now a big fan.

On the mash up does does the correct size fit your head? I'm a 59cm. The Tilley t3 fit a little loose as it should in 60cm. The Tilley t3 wanderer at 60cm was too small. I reordered 61cm.

@@AvoidingChores most are now including the LTM6 Airflo. Tilley sold the company a few years ago. New owners outsourced most of the production. I bought a couple TMH55s recently as they are still made in Canada.

Huh....I knew of the sale ... doing a quick scan on their website, I'm finding "made in china" seem to be models using the synthetic yarns. So far I've found: TP102, R2 Rebecca, airflow LTM2, LTM3, LTM5. And then a few "designed in canada / Made in China" where I see LTM6 and a few others.

You do know that Tilley sold out to corporate greed, don't you? How about buying a Christmas present for the jobless Canadians whose lives were destroyed?

Buyer beware. Tilly hats are no longer made in Canada. Tilly sold out and you will be able to receive a wonderful hat from China. 🤣

Good point. Last time I checked it looked like most of the hats made with nylon were made offshore but a handful of ones were still made in Canada (T1, T3, wool) . Easy to see when you browse on their website and look at the specs.

is it the price or options? I got this spring the TFM1 and I'm not overly pleased with it, or I should say not exactly what I wanted for a fall/winter hat.
