Tilley Wanderer Hat Review 🌞 T3 Is My New Favorite Hiking and Camping Hat

The Tilley T3 Wanderer (and all Tilley hats, really) is a fantastic hat, but is it worth the cost? Those cheap outdoor, hiking and camping hats just aren't cutting it anymore so the wife agreed to let me spend up and see if this Tilley brand that everyone raves about is worth the money.
Check out my first impressions and overall thoughts about this Tilley T3 Wanderer!

    I have a T3 that I purchased 22 years ago. It’s looking very rough and weather beaten, but still does the job. It might be time to retire it and get a replacement and I’ve been looking at the T3 Wanderer. Great review.

    I just got mine today, and I've been wearing it with the badge in front. I wondered why it would make a difference. I turned it around and tucked the back strap under the chin strap like you have to do to wear it with the badge in back. I t makes all the difference in the world wearing it correctly with the badge in back. When you tighten the chin strap, the head strap tightens at the same time automatically, so THAT'S why you wear the T 3 with the badge/log/tag in the back.

    Have you looked at the Shelta Seahawk? I like the Seahawk and the Condor. You can add a sun shade on the back, remove the chin strap if not needed and they are a cool boonie style like the T3. the Shelta hats float, have screens in the gromets and will stay on your head a 50 MPH. Hat are a style thing though so most people are picking hats for style and function.

    Congratulations on your purchase. You have made a very nice review of the product. I would only comment on one thing that I disagree with. I used to store the wind cords in the secret pocket, but I soured on it over time. I found it to be more hassle than it's really worth. The hook and loop / Velcro extends over most of the secret pocket's closure, so it is possible to thread the cords into the pocket around it, but more often than not they tend to catch--and after awhile your cords will start looking tattered from all the snags. The T3 Wanderer has a broken in feel from the factory, so maybe that's what you're looking for in the image you will be projecting, but many other Tilley models are a little more formal and upscale in their appearance, and it doesn't look the part when the cords become ratty looking from Velcro snags.

  • @BlackberryHillHouse

    @BlackberryHillHouse

    Thank you! I really do love the hat. I've only had to remove and use the front wind cord a few times and with more frequent and long term use I can absolutely see how it would become cumbersome and start damaging the cord. I really appreciate you taking the time to share this with us all. I will likely stop storing the cord there! I'm looking at my next Tilley hat to have that more formal and upscale look. Any suggestions? LTM6 has been on my list for awhile now, but with winter coming up sooner than I'd like, the Montana is another I'm eyeing.

    @@BlackberryHillHouseTilley claims that LTM6 is their top seller, which is likely why there are so many color choices. If you fall in love with one of the colors, then it's probably best to follow your heart. There is much about the LTM6 to like. It packs very well--so long as you are careful of the wire in the brim. Try to keep the wire as flat as possible, but you can mash-up the rest of it without penalty. I have a Navy one that I purchased about 5 years ago. I've packed it, and it's been with me in Lake Michigan swimming. It still looks as good as the day that I purchased it. The problem with it is that it has a very floppy brim which does not perform so well in the wind where I live in Michigan, as well as for the activities that I like to do. My preference is for the TH5 hemp model for a formal looking offering from Tilley. Based on the positive reactions that I get from people, it's my personal favorite in my collection. I have the natural color, although they also offer mocha and olive. Hemp is a very strong fiber, and the hat will last a long time. The TH5 has been around for a long time in the Tilley catalog because it's a great hat.

  • @BlackberryHillHouse

    @BlackberryHillHouse

    Thank you for the insights! A flimsy brim is something I've always dislike about my previous (non Tilley) hats. I'll need to find a local place and check out the LTM6 in person to see how flimsy that brim is and if it has a place in my collection. I haven't looked at the TH5 yet, so I definitely will.

    @@HKX_ORANGECHICKEN It depends on what you are looking for in a hat. I live in a subtropical environment and the LTM6 is light and awesome on ventilation. I do a lot of photography and I like the soft bendable brim of the LTM6. With that said, I do think the brim is too soft for strong winds. It bends in the wind and the sun protection I want is not there at that time. I ware my T3 wanderer when hiking, fishing or any other outdoor sports where my hat can get demolished. I don't think one is "better than the other", I think they are both great hats with different applications. You can't go wrong with either.
